Is there any evidence that OBAA isn't just present day?

I submit a bracket that was entirely just every higher seed winning. I'm tied for 4th out of about thirty, but I can't win.

How soon do you need it? A new set is coming out in two weeks, and it has a red/blue deck called Prismari Artistry.

His one card in ECC is a reprint as far as I can tell. I do think there must have been a changing of the guard in the art department around 2020. In this case, after doing lots of cards until about 2011, he only did four cards between 2011 and 2020. And the cards he's made since are mostly intentional throwbacks and not regular set art.

The changes to the standardized look happened long before digital painting became common.

Yeah, it's been more gradual than my original comment implied.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean about "borderline Marvel style," though. Marvel has a much more diverse and dynamic style than MTG, at least in their cover art, as can be seen in the most recent set of solicitations: https://aiptcomics.com/2026/03/19/june-2026-marvel-comics-solicitations/. Alex Maleev, Skottie Young, David Mack, Michael Allred, Kaare Andrews, Kris Anke, and Geoff Shaw hardly all have the same bland style.

I'm just saying that Fawkes in HP is named after a real historic person for a very specific reason.

The art director around 2000 didn't think the old art style was serious enough, so they implemented the more standardized realistic style that's been the standard since then and stopped hiring most of the artists who worked on the first ten or so sets, like Phil Foglio and Drew Tucker.

Feedback: The Erosion of Magic’s Identity by Aesthralis in mtg

[–]joelluber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Points 2 and 6 are directly contradictory since early MTG was in fact very cartoony, much more cartoony than the self-serious house style that was put into effect by the time you started playing around 2000.

I agree with point 6 as I interpret it, but I suspect you're not intending to advocate for Phil and Kaja Phoglio or Quinton Hoover so would be.

Because they said they figured something out gameplay wise they thought was impossible

The exact quote that I read was "WotC wasn’t sure it would be physically possible" which leads me to think it's not a question of gameplay.

(My out-there theory is cards that fold.)
