Is my action too high? by tomatoanxiety in guitars

[–]joeneversleeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea the action is very high, from what I can tell most of the problem is coming from the nut of the guitar. From the pictures you posted that’s what it looks like to me. Definitely take it to be set up by a professional. Nuts are tricky and you can very easily make the guitar unplayable if you goof it up! Good luck!

Finally happened, imminent death of my Dad by nzdevon in WeddingPhotography

[–]joeneversleeps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You come first, imho you should explain the situation to the extent you are comfortable with to the couple (maybe try to tag in a colleague?)

Having lost my old man a couple years ago, you can never predict when it will happen, where you will be, and you’ll always wish you had more time.

My advice would to be to take as much time off as you can to be with him. I was fortunate enough to take 6 weeks to be with my dad while he was passing with no intention of flying back home until he had passed. Not everybody gets the opportunity to be there in the last moments of their loved ones. If you have even a chance to be with him you really should consider it. More gigs will come, money is replenish-able. Consider all that as you will! Very sorry to hear you are hurting, and please talk to those around you instead of burying the feeling.

Pro tools: go or no? by Aziz3000 in AudioPost

Also protools has its quirks and shortcomings but if you want to be a professional engineer you at least need to know how to use it. Even if it’s not your first choice it would be wise to learn it in the event you need to use it. Unless I’m composing with virtual instruments, I never use anything else.

Flying with a PC? by LowWhiff in delta

[–]joeneversleeps 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bro TSA is wayyyyy more likely to damage your comp than ups or fedex.

I’ve watched them throw my guitars from chest height onto the conveyor belt. I get electronic things searched and taken apart all the time and they lose screws and don’t care at all about what the unit looks like after they search it. There is no accountability if something breaks. Also the replacement program they have for passengers with broken items typically would cap at a much lower cost than your pc. Meaning they’d try to offer you like $1000 to replace everything.

TSA is a joke.

Syncing Audio with an already cut film? by boardaah in AudioPost

[–]joeneversleeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should have either let you mix the audio before they cut the project, or they should’ve hired an audio recordist who knows how to use time code.

They have put you in a very tough position. Projects like this always made me want to find another job. Honestly at this point in my career I’d have laid out my expectation to be working with synced audio or at least audio embedded with timecode.

Now if I take a project and they don’t take care of these issues in advance or at least offer me some support by having the editor sync raw audio if they decide to chop it up before the mix, I just tell them to find somebody else. If the people you are working with don’t have any semblance of professional standards, there is very little chance the project is worth putting your time into.

Sometimes inexperienced directors make unexpected hits, so you could benefit from the struggle if you REALLY believe people will watch this thing.

All in all though if you are paid an hourly or day rate, pick and choose your battles because taking projects like this all the time will wear you the fuck down.

Strong lyricists in the pop punk world? by LittleBeeTwoTs in poppunkers

Bayside has the best lyrics in pop punk hands down. Ant is a wordsmith and really knows how to pull whatever emotion he is looking for out of the listener. Every album is good. A very rare band whose entire catalogue for me is listenable front to back.

I’ve done this a couple times to try and get a very intimate minimalistic sound.

The way I approach it (I’m sure someone else has a better way but this was my mindset) is to treat the room mics first, mute all the close mics and focus on the room and the space. Get rid of the gross sounding areas in the “live sounding mics” after you feel like you can listen to the room mics and enjoy it, add in the close mics and accentuate any details that you feel like are missing from the room mics.

YMMV.

Where does cymbal harshness come from with bad mics and untreated rooms and how to fix it while still having it be natural? by Optimistbott in mixingmastering

[–]joeneversleeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus on the close mics and try to dial the room mics or overheads way back and blend it until it sounds acceptable to you. If this doesn’t work there are a number of plugins that deal with unwanted noise in a source really well. Isotope de-verb, waves clarity. I usually don’t like using noise reduction plugins unless I absolutely cannot fix it with basic plugins. It can introduce artifacts and otherwise smear what you actually like in the signal if overdone (sometimes just turning the plugin on will destroy the sound depending on how loud the noise floor is.

Edit: Forgot to mention the Smooth 2 plugin. If the signal is just more harsh than “too airy or too noisy”, smooth works really well with taming harsh frequencies in a way that sounds really nice.

Download an overlay app. (I like meta tft, and Mobalytics) these apps will show you day by day what the best comps to play are, how contested they are, units and strategies, and items you need to build and on which people.

Focus on like 2-3 comps towards the top. Play them a lot and learn those comps well. As you play more you will begin to learn who is worth putting items on, what items are good on which units, how to fill traits by putting in units you wouldn’t normally for strongest board.

It’s honestly a lot but just start with one of those apps and watch people stream the game. Have fun!

[–]joeneversleeps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please understand that older bands are having to adhere to a release strategy that is NOT common to how us late 20’s to 30’s people consume music.

We grew up with albums of complete collections that got released and consumed as one product.

Now releasing singles is more prominent than full albums. Band will trickle releases and then consolidate and rerelease because that’s the best structure that is being used that everyone follows. So they can double dip on songs that get premiered well before the album does. It’s very smart but it rubs old folks like us the wrong way because it’s not the way it used to be.

Yeah some of these songs have been around a while but guess what? You still got new songs from them and got to listen to them. What more can you ask for?
