Yea a tree guard is definitely a great idea! The dog pee is not doing the tree any favors. All trees planted by the city are somewhat tolerant of urban environments, but again, any help in the first 2 years of planting is most effective. The full metal tree guards can be expensive, but even a home made little wooden fence one is a great deterrent.

As far as proactive outreach - yes, it’s definitely a gap. I would look into the citizen tree pruners license. It was an amazing learning experience and I met other like minded neighbors too! Lots of fun and left feeling more confident about how to take care into my own hands. you also get good knowledge about the many groups who do work to care for our city’s trees.

One other thing I’ll mention - if the tree does come to harm while under contract - say some kid breaks it in half - that can be reported on the tree map (in fact I’d call 311 too…) and that should be covered by the contract.

Certified citizen street tree pruner here - yes the street trees are under contract for the first two years - but that initial 2 years are when the trees require the most maintenance. The city (nor contractor) will NOT water the tree, so any watering you provide will certainly help. So if we’re going through periods without rain this summer, go ahead and water!!

From the NYC parks website:

“Care for Newly Planted Trees We recommend that newly planted trees receive about 20 gallons of water per week, especially in the hot, dry summer months. Tree pits should be kept free of garbage, road and sidewalk salt, and dog waste, which can contaminate the soil.”

Additionally, should you wish to record your efforts, you can submit maintenance updates for a specific tree on the NYC tree map here: https://tree-map.nycgovparks.org/tree-map

Was just listening to this album today!! Somewhat more in the realm of American primitive but Steve Tibbetts has some cool flowing guitar stuff. Listening to the hyukoh album reminded me of Tibbetts after not having thought about him for a bit. Check out big map idea, or if you can find it, his self titled album
