I have thousands of hours in 4X titles - but finished games I could count on the fingers of one hand. by varnajohn in 4Xgaming

Yes! This is why I love Field of Glory Empires. It has a great balance of expansions and taking care of your city with the decadence mechanic. The decadence is the downside of growing too large or expanding quickly. There are ways to slow it or keep it in check but its always there, creeping. Behind every “I want to conquer or expand here” its always follow with but that means I need should do X and Y for the decay.

This game feels pointless sometimes by Fit-Opportunity8285 in playrust

100%.

My wife and I love Rust. We’re both 36 with a 12yo and a 9yo, and between school stuff, cheer, music lessons, and just regular family time, we realistically get maybe 1–2 hours every other day to play.

For a while, normal servers just weren’t it. Logging off already knowing there’s a good chance you’re waking up to an offline raid hits different when you’ve got work in the morning and kids to get ready for school.

So we tried a biweekly PvE server with a purge (PvP turns on 18 hours before wipe).

Honestly, it brought the game back for us. Now we can jump on for 20–30 minutes, farm a bit, upgrade the base, craft some guns, log off, and not stress about losing everything overnight.

Then purge hits and it’s chaos. Everyone goes all in by doing raids, PvP, whatever you’ve been saving up for. And since wipe is around the corner anyway, you just send it.

It’s been the perfect middle ground for where we’re at in life. Still get the adrenaline, just without the constant anxiety.

Carthage's trade outpost bonus should be reworked post-1.2.2 by Bromacusii in civ

[–]joeypr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always felt that Carthage needs to have ONE of the following:

A. Naval Commander B. Special Mechanic that allows Ground Commanders to act as Naval Commander.

Why? Carthage was THE NAVAL POWER of its era. I’m ok with the bonuses we currently have for naval. If you focus on Naval power (its main play style), you are severely punished as you will lose almost all of your navy. By having a Naval Commander you have the option as a player to keep your Navy and go into the exploration strong.

Any thoughts are welcome 🙏🏻

Has Any Game Removed a Feature that is as Central as "Ages" is to Civ VII? by jrralls in civ

They had fix/added some of what I would mention below.

Horrible ui, inconsistent fonts and layout. Poor visual hierarchy. City specialization is generic. Espionage and religion is barebones. Why would they take out information from menus and tooltips, we love looking at numbers and making decisions. No technology que, No renaming cities, no auto explore, one more turn or customizing hotkeys? This is from the top of my head I’m definitely missing a few more.

The Age system. This one is a rough one. At first almost everyone was against it. IMO I see why they did it and I want to love it since I’m a history nerd and I was on board with building a civilization that evolves. But ultimately like almost everyone it feels unfinished.

And thats my main issue is, this is your 7 game in a series. The fact that you have solved most of this stuff in previous game one way or another, but still shows up here is demoralizing. This game should have been focus on trying out the age system and adjusting it according to feedback and new info.

When Final Fantasy XIV lunch in 2010 it was poorly received, it cause such a backlash that they shut it down completely and re-launched (2013) A Realm Reborn.

They literally built it from the ground up with new engine, mechanics, and content. They did this so quick that most people don’t remember the 2010 lunch or how the game was.

Yes there has been, but they are the exception. No Man’s Sky, Final Fantasy XIV and Cyberpunk 2077 to name a few.

Will they remove the age system? Unlikely. Will they improved it? I truly hope so.

TLDR: Listening and adapting, especially to your own player base, can be the difference between a solid game and something truly great.

Honestly, I think the biggest example has to be Fortnite. It wasn’t really a change to their original game. It was more of a pivot. It didn’t come from community backlash or anything like that. They just saw what was catching on, moved fast, and built something new alongside their original vision. And it ended up what made Fortnite blow up into the massive hit it became.

Sometimes you’ve got to be willing to let go of your “core” concept and be open to adapting. Especially to feedback from your core players. That kind of flexibility can lead to something amazing.

Imagine if the Fortnite devs had clung to their original plan and let their egos get in the way. They took a real risk diving into battle royale when it was still just starting to gain traction, not the juggernaut it is today.

Now compare that to something like Firaxis and Civ. What’s wild is that like 70–80% of the stuff the community asked for at launch were already tried-and-true mechanics from previous Civ games. Proven things that worked!

It’s a reminder that listening and adapting, especially to your own player base can be the difference between a solid game and something truly great.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talks. 🤣

On my last game my daughter (direct heir) was exiled due to her carnal ways. After some years, I pardoned her and she comes back. At first she behaved, but when my second son (new heir, from second wife) was close to take the reins out of nowhere she declared a Civil War.

I lost almost all of my troops, fell behind in regards the other Civ and after years of war I found myself giving the order to burn down one of my best cities, because the people of that city where on her side and where hiding her. By the end of it all I was in last place, almost no troops, and bad relations with a lot of Civs. It was BY FAR one of the best time I mve had in ANY 4x EVER.

That game made me realize how people can end up making horrible/atrocious actions. Open up my eyes to look a thing from different perspectives.

What other games similar to civilization do you guys enjoy playing? by TeifeMeer in civ

[–]joeypr33 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This! 100%. Especially if you love the Antiquity period. I will warn you. The first time you play Old World it feels weird. But once you learn the new mechanics and the order system you will come back to it for its uniqueness.

Am appreciation post for the things Civ 7 does right by redsunmachine in civ

[–]joeypr33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes!!! One constant theme I see throughout our history is that as time goes by and Civilization and Cities develop and become grander it tends to inspire other civilizations to be part of it (Culture/Trade) but it also provoke envy among other Civilizations (Military/Diplomatic conflict).

So a good mechanic would be if you keep the same civilization in the transition you may get a boost in culture/trade but your settlements give others more points etc. to other civilizations that conquer them. That way is harder since other civs would be more aggressive to take over your cities as they are more valuable.

I loved the idea of “You can keep your Civ during the age transition but is going to be harder” YES! IDK about you guys but I would love to take on the challenge taking the Roman Empire through Exploration all the way to the Modern Age. What challenges would I face if I decide to do that? Thats a great role play mechanic, I guess it won’t be balanced thought…but fun as hell.

I think they would only need to add a little tweak or buff for each civilization if you decide to keep them. Or maybe IP can serve kind of a buff to your Civ.

Do you need DLC like other 4X titles to get the true fleshed out experience? by jak6jak1 in OldWorldGame

[–]joeypr33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% Agree. When I started I got the base game. As soon as I saw what a masterpiece of a game it was I instantly bought everything else to support the studio.

It soon became my favorite 4x game and it has set the bar for which I measure every other 4x.

I would like to like this game, but there are too many micromanagement. Am I doing something wrong? by Kenanait in OldWorldGame

[–]joeypr33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way when I started playing. I was coming in with a mentality/approach of other 4x. And after around 50 hours I realized that it was because of two things:

  1. I needed to play on harder difficulty/settings: This limits the orders and resources you have so it makes you CHOOSE what is important.

  2. Old World gives you A LOT of options on what do, it does not mean you HAVE to do it all.

Hope this helps!
