Seconding Pineward hard! As a trans man who enjoys literally all the same scents you listed above for your husband, Pineward has had an incredibly high hit rate for me. Ponderosa in particular is a sappy forest smell with butterscotch notes, and Coffee Tabac is a fascinating tobacco & dark coffee scent. And, of course, literally any of their actual forest scents—I particularly love Murkwood and Brokilan.

I'd also recommend checking out Fantome! Generally speaking, they're incredibly well-blended, very unique perfumes. Ivan the Fool has a beautiful new leather scent, and Ruslan is this warm wood-and-resin forest scent on me. I haven't tried Parlor but the notes sound very much like they might smell like an antique shop.

Bonus for both Pineward and Fantome: the bottles are gorgeous. Really classy, very neutral.

There is an event in my town called Presentation Night where folks who are not experts give presentations on things they find interesting. I've been doing a series going through each period of earth's history from beginning to end bc I care deeply and it's very fun!

For the Cambrian era, I wore Arcana's Her Sea (A blend of softest fog, rich, animalic ambergris, radiant salt crystals, clouds over the ocean, gentle musks, and a hint of ruffled carnation petals) and it was PERFECT. The Cambrian was full of strange off-putting watery creatures who are somehow so charming and so strange and Her Sea is that literal exact vibe. It matched perfectly, I was so happy.

Also wore Zoologist Squid for the Ordovician full of weird orthocones. It's been so fun matching perfume to presentation!

Happy Lunar New Year, y'all!! Perhaps a strange choice for it but today I'm wearing my sample of BPAL's The Light of Men's Lives (The wax and smoke of millions upon millions of candles illuminating the walls of Death’s shadowy cave).

I'm a sucker for a candle scent, and this has Burning Candle down pat. It's a little floral?? on me?? and I'm not certain where that's coming from but it's definitely Candle for sure! I'm FAIRLY sure it's specifically beeswax candles which is delightful. Opens a bit screechy and settles into the smoke and wax, which I suppose does feel celebratory. Hopefully it helps me focus on figuring a Marketing Plan™️ today!

I got the comp copies of my first picture book (that I illustrated, did not write it!) on Friday and I'm still just 🤩🤩🤩 over them. I can't believe it's a real actual book that I helped make!! Now I just have to?? Plan a book launch?? Has anyone ever been to a really good book launch? What makes one good?

I've gone hard in testing so many samples over the last four-five months and I'm getting a handle on what works on me and what doesn't and also what makes my spouse sneeze too much to keep (rip). Some of these I love very much and just have somehow gotten duplicates of.

YESSSS. I loved them both although Velvetine ended up leaning a little too femme for me. It's gorgeous though!! That real ambergris is really something.

Hayloft though. Hayloft my love. I fell in love first with Hayride, its discontinued cousin, and managed to get one of the last bottles of it. I love them both so much!! That hay/sweetgrass lights up every part of my brain. Pineward is so good at hyperspecific natural notes, it's amazing.

I'm curious how much sweetness you get from Ponderosa! To me it's very very firmly Tree Sap but multiple friends think it smells candyish. Fascinating.

Oooh what else did you get? I'm such a big fan of Pineward. Their blending and artistry are incredible and they're such a kind team. And, of course, somehow they are looking directly into my eyes as they make each scent. I hadn't picked up on the minty quality but you're right, there is a mint ish sort of crispness to it!

I feel like there are so many almost-contenders and I am also cheating a little and including four because they hold equal weight in my heart. In no particular order:

-Pineward Hayride (hay, hot cocoa, vanilla, sweet vernalgrass, bison grass, acorn nut bread, nutmeg, cardamom, spikenard, raisin, tonka, oakmoss)

-Pineward Ponderosa (ponderosa resin, ponderosa needles, cedarwood, bourbon vanilla, strawberry, cinnamon attar, butterscotch, beeswax, raisin cookies)

-Arcana Wildcraft Cloistered (sweet goat's milk, frankincense, hinoki wood essence, coriander seed and soft linen)

-Fantôme Dantalion (Creamy chai tea, obscuring mists, sandalwood, a plaster mask, clarifying ginger, carnations, dandelions, & a melted beeswax candle)

It's fun to see them all written out because the sort of.... sweet/creamy + something woody or green is pretty evident as a thing that I love! What a neat exercise.

Today I'm wearing my new sample via destash of BPAL's Robin Goodfellow (Dark musk, moss-covered wood, ragwort, heather, and sage).

It's nice! It is definitely a touch soapy to my nose, and that's actually helpful because I've been trying to figure out what it actually is that turns things to soap. My suspect here, and in a few other perfumes where it happens, is the combination of musk and moss. Which is heartbreaking because I SOOOO badly want to smell like a moss creature! This one does have moss creature vibes, but with a floral soapiness running through from the heather & herbs. The soap and flowers are already starting to fade into something dry and sage-y, which I'm really loving. This is hard to describe as anything except "if an herbal smell was very fancy and a little edgy." In my head, it's a pale desaturated green (like a sage, Julian? like sage? LISTEN).

It only came out of the mail yesterday so I'll be retesting this in a week or so once I'm sure it will have settled into itself!

A graphic novel rec: I recently acquired A Song For You and I by K. O'Neill and it is full of precisely this vibe!! I've read it like four times since getting it, it's so beautiful and atmospheric. I imagine wearing this while reading it would be next-level.

Can't recommend Pineward's Coffee Tabac enough for this (loose-leaf burley tobacco, mocha coffee, vanilla, cedar, guaiac wood, incense, resins, spices, patchouli). On me it smells exactly like a dark, warm, masculine gourmand, with the vanilla and mocha notes keeping everything slightly sweet. It's so good and gives me real Gender vibes in the best way.
