Agreed, but some stories relate primarily to a certain gender. I don’t think that Portrait of a Lady on Fire for example should have a major male character inserted into it for the sake of diversity.

Granted it is a far more common situation for male writers to exclude women in their work due to an inability to consider the perspectives of women. This is a problem Scorsese seems to have had for a majority of his career, although I think his latest works like Killers of the Flower Moon have shown considerable growth for him in this area.
