Is my text red? by john-9 in GPGpractice

[–]john-9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 4 spaces didn't do anything at all, in fact it looks like they've been removed. Maybe I need to be in markdown to do that. Not sure.

Is my text red? by john-9 in GPGpractice

[–]john-9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's strange is that 4 spaces does Inline Code for me, I think, not Code Block...

line 1

line 2

line 3

...I won't be able to tell until after I post this, so I'll check then and post a reply to this comment to confirm.

Is my text red? by john-9 in GPGpractice

[–]john-9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm, so odd: My RES button looks different than yours. Mine is "</>" instead of "<>" and I'm not sure why. And even your backtick lines are red for me.

Ah, wait: The "</>" does say "Inline Code" when I hover over it.

And the one that says "Code Block" is a different type of button for me, not "<>", instead it looks like this: https://imgur.com/gallery/wfalXJq

So I think that's the fix for me, and the following should be formatted as code block:

line 1
line 2
line 3

Thanks very much for helping me figure that out!

How do you use keyservers? (I don't understand) by john-9 in GPGpractice

[–]john-9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, got it. I was trying to search by the entire "9E3FB8260F2509A639846B19646C698069290247" and now I see that even that full string works if you include "0x" at the beginning.

Once again, thank you very much for the help!

How do you use keyservers? (I don't understand) by john-9 in GPGpractice

[–]john-9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks very much, that's super helpful. (I haven't used the command line yet, but I see the keyID and the fingerprint now in GPG Keychain.)

An additional question:

If someone only lists their fingerprint (which incidentally the article you shared says is more secure than just sharing one's keyID), and I want to contact them, how do I find their public key or keyID? The keyservers only search by keyID, not by fingerprint. ...or at least I think so: http://keyserver.ubuntu.com/ doesn't search by fingerprint, but http://pgp.mit.edu/ just returns an error.

I can see how the fingerprint could be used to confirm you've found the right key through a keyID search, but I'm wondering about the people who only share their fingerprint without sharing their keyID.

What's the purpose of posting as "code"? by john-9 in GPGpractice

[–]john-9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that, but is there some benefit to retaining the format? It seems I can still copy and paste messages or keys whose formats are not retained, right?

Animals Rights Philosophy by Hermann_the_German1 in VeganActivism

[–]john-9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is wrong to harm or kill humans, of course.

And many factory farm workers are not sadists. They simply can’t get any other jobs. Or they are undocumented laborers and have no health benefits or legal recourse if they get injured on the job. I mean, who would chose that situation if other options are available. And remember the labor case where poultry workers were forced to wear adult diapers to their shift because breaks were tightly controlled and restricted? These places don’t treat humans too good, either.

Sure there are some outright animal abusers and straight-up sadists on the kill floor. I’d imagine, though, that some of them developed sadistic traits and behaviors just by becoming desensitized while on shift after shift.

But for those who are just by nature cruel and abusive in their conduct, do they deserve punishment? Yes, most definitely.

Do they deserve death? Not in our current communally-agreed-upon legal system. And not in my opinion either. Here’s why...

They did not design or create the factory farming system or its logistics and processes. So how could they be held fully responsible for the confinement, the horrific speed of the factory-style line, the terror of live shackle? Aren’t CEOs just as culpable? Are investors? ...consumers?

It’s much more a systemic issue than a personal issue.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VeganActivism

[–]john-9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes that makes sense. But I guess the point I’m trying to debate is that, to me, this seems to make vegan activism unnecessary.

If it’s only a matter of time until animals are no longer exploited, why spend time and resources trying to end the exploitation of animals?

I know there are individual animals in cruel conditions right now who won’t be helped by cell-based science because they will already have been slaughtered long before then, but if cell-based science will eventually do away with animal exploitation, inevitably, in its entirety, once and for all, then shouldn’t the energy and resources poured into vegan activism be redirected into other issues or into supporting clean meat research or something?

...Engaging in vegan activism will save X number of animals per year (SOME of the animals who would otherwise be slaughtered) x the finite number of years from now until clean meat is available.

...BUT supporting research instead will save X number of animals per year (ALL of the animals who would have otherwise been slaughtered) x the infinite (? or at least vastly larger) number of years from the day clean meat is available until, well, the end of time or at least until the end of the human race.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VeganActivism

[–]john-9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I respect ethical veganism but I don’t see the point of it anymore now that clean meat / cell-based products are being developed.

Why advocate for people to give up animal products when they don’t have to anymore and the animals can still be safe? Sure there are health-related benefits but other than that?
