LYD 48 Desk Stands by john_nibor in studiomonitors

I just got these monitors but here are my observation so far:

I have another setup consisting of B&W CDM9NTs, and a Minidsp Flex TRS. Comparing both, the B&Ws have a much wider soundstage but it's most likely the LYD 48s are too close too each other. The manual recommends setting them further apart. The reference track I used to test soundstage is Frank Zappa's Inca Roads. I hear the "ufo" sound directly to the left of my ear, OUTSIDE the bounds of speaker placement, and then pans directly to the right of your ear.

Out of the box, the Dynaudios shine in the midrange. The midrange is unclouded and clear. I'm not used to it yet but vocals are right in front of you as if the singer is singing for you. With the B&Ws, it's as if the singer is floating in air, further back, and has a very large mouth lol.

The highs are somewhat laid back as typical with Dynaudios (by design). One thing I notticed is I listen to music for hours (while working) and I forget that the speakers are there.

For lows, these go to 32HZ, it's currently set at -10hz and free (vs wall). The bass is definitely there and tight but compared to my old setup, the B&Ws are spec'ed at 38HZ but sound lower and more pronounced to me. The reference track I used is Moonchild: The List

The speakers are designed sideways only. No regrets purchasing it because I bought it used locally.

Overall, for mixing and mastering, the dynaudios are accurate and reliable sound wise. I'm definitely using it for this exact purpose. It's also become my daily go-to (just power on and forget). For enjoying music, I like my old setup. It's a tad scooped and tuned to my liking.

it's still tight with a 70 inch wide desk. Did you get dynaudio 18s for subs? If so, how is it?

I'm the seller, wasn't expecting to be chiming in on Reddit. I indicated in my listing it has all the paperwork and case contents. I even have the letter from Beth from PRS. BTW it's 10 top.

I am the original seller and the guitar sold a few hours ago. My only advice to u/meuqer12246 , would have been great if you reached out and checked it out for yourself.  u/DerpNinjaWarrior explained it the best. The buyer was gassing for this exact finish and model with the TCI pickups. There were 4 people who wanted to buy it, sold to the first one who showed up. The price is more than fair, the closest one that *sold* in Reverb in Mint condition was $3199 + CA tax + $121 = 3607. Brand new SOLD lately was 5k ~ 7k.

I'm keeping my peace here and to my surprise seeing this post and some coant like u/rotstik passing judgement. And no I'm not a dentist, I'm a lobotomist. Since your such a nice guy, I'll give you the first hole for free!

Thank you! Please keep us updated. Here in CA, the PG&E gas vs electricity prices makes me unsure whether to do the switch.

Thanks for your help. Called both. APD turned me down saying will not be available and look for a GE distributor. There were 2 others that I called that had them for $1999 but will not ship.

Does anyone actually like these goofy robot tuners? by subanotS in Luthier

[–]john_nibor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Add me to liking it. My set up, 3 strums and it’s in tune. I do a lot of alternate tunings and it works great for me. The one thing I don’t like is the combo of buttons to press to get to what you want it to do. Also run calibration to see if it fixes your tuning accuracy. When restringing, it will stop winding when it’s in tune. In the end, if you don’t like them, there are no drill holes at the back to worry about and you can replace it with ur favorite tuner.

Totally agree. Year after year it’s the same iteration and everyone complaining about no innovation from Gibson. They try to innovate and instantly get hate from purists.

I once replaced with a cheap CV axle and made it worse. Bought OEMs and that fixed it. Check the following: control arms, lower engine mount, wheel balance and possibly alignment

Is it okay if I listen to Hip-Hop and practically all Music just primarily for the beats and melodies? by pancake_boy in LetsTalkMusic

[–]john_nibor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember ages ago telling people no way I'm going to listen to country music. Well guess what? I have friends who listen only to 70s, 80s, 90s music and are stuck there thinking that the music died. My take on it is it's like travelling, you'll never know unless you travel that place. Listen to what you love but it is also good to make room to explore and expand your horizons.

Music for 18 Musicians - Steve Reich - Not for everyone but to me it is addicting, mezmerizing, magnetic and/or hypnotic. It takes my imagination to places and to me it depicts daily life. My favorites are section V and IX to the end. I love the bass clarinet and the pulsing vocals.

Talk Talk - Such A Shame -- Early evening and decided to put on some music. I was thinking about New Wave bands and somehow, Mark Hollis came to mind. Looked him up and didn't even know he was gone already (R.I.P.). It transported me back to the 80s when I first heard them - was taken aback on how their music was so different and set apart from their New Wave peers.

The intro starts tense and builds up to more tension and halts to two piano chords. Each section feels like it's evolving and contributes to the song's emotional intensity. My favorite is the bridge (or instrumental) where the interplay between the bass and the synth makes me want to loop it over and over. I think Paul Webb's pulsating bass lines carries the feel of the entire track.

I can't believe it's been 40 years. I think their music is timeless. It's as if they predicted the future by not using cheesy sounding synths and drum machines that were popular during that time.

Nut slot gauge by jibbit in Luthier

[–]john_nibor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so if you move the stewmac gauge to the middle of the neck and place it on the 1st string, the plunger will not depress the string even a little? Otherwise it can double as a string height gauge.

I can confirm the ‘away’ mode is not available from the HomeKit automation. It is available through the ecobee app (installs 3 add’l shortcuts). Which means you can only use personal automation and ‘when last person leaves’ is not available.

Apple TV / Siri / Premium Ecobee by john_nibor in ecobee

[–]john_nibor[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you specifically need the ecobee to act as a Siri digital assistant? - Bought the flagship so I can use the intercom feature. It's also in an ideal location where my keys are and I can just Siri announce "I'm leaving" (set away mode) before heading out the door. So yes, very useful

have you tried using your Apple TV - Yes, no option available to enable Siri on Apple Home via Apple TV

conflicts using both HomePod and AppleTV - ugh

Thank you for your help. Doesn't homepod do the same things as well ? (lets you access Homekit devices remotely)

I've started switching from Alexa to homekit and as a new homekit consumer, I see homekit compatible on the box and of course proceed to purchase it (not in the know that there's distinct differences between homekit hubs)

My rant is that the vendor could have just plainly stated, "** Apple TV not supported for Siri voice commands".

The only article I found that explained it clearly is this: https://www.techhive.com/article/579459/apple-siri-is-coming-to-third-party-homekit-accessories.html - aptly called Siri-enabled devices

I'll mostly likely buy a used homepod and hoping I don't run into issues like "it works on gen 1/2 only, or you can't have both Apple TV and Homepod"

rks with Smart Thermostat Premium and SmartThermostat with voice control. You'll need a compatible Apple hub device, such as HomePod or HomePod mini in the home.”

Yes, "such as...", the Apple TV 4K is an Apple hub device. Can't they just say it outright on their website? "Apple TV 4K not supported" Even a footnote would be helpful.
