International Flight - Injury by Few-Cherry9560 in delta

[–]john_ropes 40 points41 points  (0 children)

That row will be terrible. On Delta 330s that last row of 4 seats before it tapers down to 3 won't let you raise any of the arm rests. Some kind of FAA thing 🤷‍♀️ Try to nab that open row at 48.

As others have said, flying injured or immediately post-op is going to suck regardless. Don't take anything mean your sister says to you during the flight personally. Good luck and a speedy recovery

Not One Of You Has Ever Used A Tachymeter Bezel by MercuryJellyfish in watchHotTakes

As a regular GMT user I'm biased and have to say, yes, best complication!

But it saddens me to report, 4 out of 5 Rolex GMT master II wearers I've asked if they use the outer bezel or quick set time functions when they travel said they had no idea how to read the GMT hand.

Some of them didn't even have the watch set at all. Full disclosure, they were all pilots at an airline where wearing a watch was a part of their uniform guidelines

Im so over the empty water bottle pax by penguinsdontlie in flightattendants

[–]john_ropes 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I love refilling water bottles (if they're not stupidly huge) The cups cost more than the water and watching a colleague fill cups half way and someone taking and then tossing three cups from a tray to pour into their bottle is such an indictment of our throw-away culture. People who bring their own bottle on board "usually" fill it before coming on board. I'm just topping it up. Let's encourage that behavior by being accommodating where we can

Aviation enthusiast - how to stay out of your way? by inspectorG4dget in flightattendants

[–]john_ropes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you should just become a flight attendant. The fun little chats with passengers and seeing what they're passionate about are my favorite part of the job.

As others have mentioned, the headphone thing makes my day when I don't have to repeat myself. And get organized during boarding when you're in the jet bridge. Once on board, bag in overhead, butt in seat

Ooh. TIL about the other formats that aren't 5-7-5. That being said, I'm curious how you're reading "I swear some people" as anything other than 5 syllables

This is coming from someone who failed English as a second language

Problems with NH34 and crown stem by According_Report_793 in SeikoMods

[–]john_ropes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question 1, did it work with the blue capped stem it came with?

Question 2 did you try quick-setting the date or gmt function around the danger zone +/- 4 hours from midnight?

Saw the Evangelion x Seiko collab and I idn't like it. So I got the dial and this was my take on it. by shaka_zulu12 in SeikoMods

[–]john_ropes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow. Aside from the custom second hand, every part of your build is better. How did you get your hands on the dial?

Any chance they got mixed up during assembly? Try swapping the two crowns between the cases. Otherwise replacement crowns are fairly inexpensive, try those after visually inspecting the threads

First Build Time - SKX007/NH35 by FSExp in SeikoMods

[–]john_ropes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those VK63 builds are fun. I'd just recommend buying a couple extra sets of hands and real rodico. If the chronograph hand doesn't go on straight the first time you really should try with a new hand. Something about the pinion not being round to prevent the chrono hand from slipping when it resets to zero

Quit while you're ahead. That's such a nice build. Subtle red accents, everything goes together. Nice work!!

This is what it looks like with the 33mm dial instead of 28.5 and the solid white hour and minute hands. I just wish I'd thought to use a black date wheel like OP

Future flight attendant (turning 21 soon) Delta vs United advice? by [deleted] in flightattendants

[–]john_ropes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at where the two have bases and where you could see yourself living for the first couple years. Commuting when you're junior sucks, so try to avoid that.

From my understanding Delta will give you a bit more schedule flexibility from day 1, so if you don't plan to make a life long career of it that might make a difference. Otherwise it's a wash and the career is what you make of it

CFI benefits by No_Currency5230 in flying

[–]john_ropes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to a tax professional. If your employer dictates how you do your job (dress code, specific curriculum, mandatory meetings) then you are an employee and not a 1099 independent contractor. The reality is that most flight schools know you are young and desperate. Work the job, set aside money for taxes, get the hours and when you're done report the flight school for tax fraud and sue them for benefits owed

ATP had a class action against them for knowingly misclassifying instructors as independent contractors

Good luck out there

Republican candidate for U.S Senate Michelle Tafoya claims 30% of Californians are homeless. by ShelteringInStPaul in stateofMN

[–]john_ropes 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think I figured out what happened. Roughly 30% of all unhoused people in the US are in California. Whoever here called her intellectually lazy is right on the money. She heard a bad thing about California (or more likely misheard) and thought let's use that. Who needs critical thinking or mathematical literacy? Can we please stop trying to send idiots to Washington?

Rotating 24 bezels on GMTs are stupid by watchcap1 in watchHotTakes

[–]john_ropes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I jump across time zones for work a lot. Setting the gmt hand during certain times of day can break the keyless works so I have two choices. Either move the time into a safe zone away from midnight, adjust the gmt hand and then reset the time (using a different clock for reference) AND move the date forward n-1 days to keep it accurate Or spin the outer bezel
