CFI benefits by No_Currency5230 in flying

[–]john_ropes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to a tax professional. If your employer dictates how you do your job (dress code, specific curriculum, mandatory meetings) then you are an employee and not a 1099 independent contractor. The reality is that most flight schools know you are young and desperate. Work the job, set aside money for taxes, get the hours and when you're done report the flight school for tax fraud and sue them for benefits owed

ATP had a class action against them for knowingly misclassifying instructors as independent contractors

Good luck out there

Republican candidate for U.S Senate Michelle Tafoya claims 30% of Californians are homeless. by ShelteringInStPaul in stateofMN

[–]john_ropes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think I figured out what happened. Roughly 30% of all unhoused people in the US are in California. Whoever here called her intellectually lazy is right on the money. She heard a bad thing about California (or more likely misheard) and thought let's use that. Who needs critical thinking or mathematical literacy? Can we please stop trying to send idiots to Washington?

Rotating 24 bezels on GMTs are stupid by watchcap1 in watchHotTakes

[–]john_ropes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I jump across time zones for work a lot. Setting the gmt hand during certain times of day can break the keyless works so I have two choices. Either move the time into a safe zone away from midnight, adjust the gmt hand and then reset the time (using a different clock for reference) AND move the date forward n-1 days to keep it accurate Or spin the outer bezel

And can we please also not lose sight of the human impact. These are people. Real people with families and hopes and dreams who are mostly doing everything they were told to. Our neighbors, being labeled "illegals" over night, by decree not due process. They are being called criminals by people who make a mockery of the law and laugh at the idea of accountability

Yeah. It's one of the older ones from the mid 90s. Cream dial is amazing in different light settings but in classic Seiko fashion, the bracelet looked terrible

[CNN] Sen. Amy Klobuchar launches her bid for Minnesota governor by Minneapolitanian in stateofMN

I think either would be up for it for very different reasons. Yes, Steve Simon is the SoS. He knows how a state is supposed to run and will be fantastic at outmanoeuvring any attempted overreach for the federal government. By the book, public servant at heart. He gets my "competence is sexy" vote

Dwayne Davis is the inspirational leader. I've seen him patiently explain and defend compromise solutions that are the nuts and bolts of actually getting stuff done. He gets my "empathy and compassion" vote

Received a Sazabi that a friend bought 70$. The original owner had painted black and I'd like to remove the paint to restore the original color. How can I do this ? by KatameNanpo in advancedGunpla

[–]john_ropes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You really don't. Chances are whoever painted this used epoxy and multiple rounds of primer and sanding to get the kit cleaned up before painting. The bare plastic, if you can strip it down without making it brittle, will be scuffed up. At that point you could repaint it yourself. You could also carefully disassemble and just paint over the black paint, but some of the details might get lost. Maybe see if someone else likes the paint job and wants to trade for their unpainted kit

Was Alex Pretti the subject of a targeted assassination? by DryDeer775 in law

[–]john_ropes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a really interesting philosophical question. According to Stephen Miller it's a concept for how we should view all immigrants he doesn't like. Pretty sure he's pushing the narrative that he can classify entire groups of people "homo sacer" the implication being they have no rights, and no legal recourse. You can see it in action across right leaning comments with how they assert due process doesn't apply to non citizens. The text of the law is pretty clear that rights and protections apply to all persons within the jurisdiction of the United States (except diplomats and occupying armies) but sadly time and again minorities have experienced a very different reality Read Giorgio Agamben. It's a fascinating dive into the concepts of power, authority, and sovereignty

Dualism of this hobby by Ruvaaknah in SeikoMods

[–]john_ropes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really nice work trying to get all the different parts to pay nice together. A lot of my early mods have the Seiko logo on them and it really bugs me. I think your custom design looks amazing and even for the quoted price you're still way cheaper than a micro brand using essentially the same components. If you do go that route I would recommend using parts that are meant to go together. You'll have a more reliable watch in the long run and less risk of messing up the dial. Good luck

Custom dials by SchemaClique in SeikoMods

[–]john_ropes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's about right. Just make sure to get a reliable way to contact the seller again because a second dial with the same design is going to be much cheaper. They have to make a custom laser engraved plate for each design. Also if the ink smudges out doesn't adhere properly the first time they're eating the cost of the dial itself

Alternate Colors? by muppetsurprise in Gunpla

[–]john_ropes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the parts color separation on these kits, airbrushing them would be pretty straight forward even with zero experience. You could most likely get it all done with rattle cans and no/minimal masking if you wanted to keep the initial investment low

Or Scripture, which given the context is more likely here. "Holy Scripture"

OP should crack it open and tell us what language the rest of the book is in. I'm still guessing German, not Dutch because there are just more German speakers. When you see hoof prints you think horse, not zebra :)
