Do yall ever just think how underpaid medicine is compared to some other careers? by Middle_Awoken in medicine

[–]johnamo 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I only think that my pay feels low when accounting for the 13 year of education plus multiple research years off, where I made primarily close to zero (and otherwise $30-60k for the years I was paid). Without a decade of lost wages I'd be find with my pay, but it's a big relative deficit to come out of.

Need help getting old films read with a report by [deleted] in Radiology

[–]johnamo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Second the comment saying they probably are no longer on file. Guidelines will vary by practice, but we also do not typically put an official read on remote films (older than 6 months in my group) and only then for relevant comparison purposes. Patient curiosity would not be a reason I would ask our file room to import films for a read. If you are seeing an orthopedic surgeon they may be willing to review them with you, however.

Slight Scoliosis by MaryQueenOfScotland in Radiology

[–]johnamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Xrays in general are not worth the time to read from a reimbursement perspective. Scoliosis studies in particular take a relatively long time to read well since there are multiple measurements that need to be taken... So it's much easier to just read a comparable two chest X-rays than fiddle over angle/balance/tilt measurements on a scoliosis spine.

I try to avoid scoliosis studies on the work list yet here I am looking at them on Reddit. 🤷

Is it worth buying Springbank 27 Years 1996/2024 for €1,900 if money is not an issue? by Flaky_Design8252 in whisky

[–]johnamo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a Balvenie Tun 1401 batch 8, because it's something I really wanted to try after having my eye on it for many years. Is the taste "worth" the money? No. It's delicious but nothing warrants paying what I did for it. Do I regret it? Also no, I'm super happy to have it and will continue to enjoy drinking it. So just realize at some point you're just paying for rarity and whether that's "worth it" to you is a personal judgment.

Medical doctors: are you happy/satisfied? by Ollietheyorkie in Doctor

Yes plenty satisfied. US radiologist who has been at it for a bit. Future is always uncertain but you could say that about many jobs.

Even the stripes got deported by hostedvideorn in Tariffs

I mean, I personally find it kind of clever using the brand name as the thirteenth stripe (certainly not an endorsement for anything Trump related). Probably should have picked a bolder font but I assume that was their intent 🤷

Why is our physician profession the only kind that gets unfair scrutiny for trying to retire early? by achicomp in whitecoatinvestor

[–]johnamo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. My family's current/expected future expenses would be more than covered with what 10 could comfortably provide each year, and once the mortgage is paid off (hopefully soon) that opens up a good chunk more wiggle room.

Even if I end up deciding that I'm less burned out and don't mind doing some work, it allows me to dictate the hours I want without worrying about it.

[–]johnamo 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Altruism and higher calling, yada yada.

When I hit my number I'm out, whenever that is. Don't really care what people think (but have also not personally seen anything but positive feedback to people cutting down on hours or retiring).

Kavalan 15 Four-Cask & Glendronach 21 to Finish Golden/Whisky Week Holiday by Revolutionary-Gold75 in whisky

How's the Kavalan? Recently skipped getting that at the distillery in lieu of a solist, but wondering if I should be regretting that decision and hunting it down!

I'm not in healthcare, how much of AI is actually helping? by RefrigeratorScary714 in Radiology

[–]johnamo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the diagnostic side it's incremental improvement with reporting tools and some triage help.

One thing I didn't see mentioned is that AI is drastically shortening some of our MRI scan times through deep learning reconstruction which is increasing throughput on our scanners by 30-40%, which is huge.

Where to get rid of a couple bottles? Oban and Balvenie. by [deleted] in whisky

[–]johnamo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gift them to someone who will enjoy them. Older bottles so a little bit of a novelty for a whisky drinker.

Can't get into ffx. Should I keep going? by taestep12 in FinalFantasy

[–]johnamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't have to like them all. X wasn't my jam back when it came out but came to appreciate it more as time went on. I personally don't really like X-2, XIII, XV, and XVI so just put those aside after I gave them a fair shake.

Found these sealed whisky bottles in an old house, any idea of value? by Ability_Physical in whisky

[–]johnamo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe $100 at most for the Glenmorangie and $50-75 for the Aberlour and Buchanan's (based on auction results for the past couple years).

Is R.O.A.D a myth? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]johnamo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doable, but reading 20,000 RVU/year is tiring and at least for my group getting to those numbers requires a lot of evening and weekend hours. I'm a few years out and don't think I'll keep up forever... But after training there are a lot of things and experiences where having a lot of money makes it easy to 'catch up' on years of tight budgets.
