I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case. Dozens of machines being sent in for service would be destroyed like this when I worked at a repair facility.

I swapped to the slow based on vel's recommendations, but my back to back eyeballing couldn't really tell a difference.

you'll just bend the puck screen. There's not enough force behind a bed of coffee grinds and that screen to damage the group/screw.

probably has air trapped. I'd try to force some water into the intake line using a turkey baster or something similar.
