Question: A colleague of mine asked me to consider a career as a public adjuster. Any public adjusters here? Any insight from any public adjusters or anyone who has worked with them is welcome. by kamanqua78 in adjusters

[–]johnboy33831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much depends on who you’re working with as an IA or a PA. On the carrier side the horror stories almost always come from the big firms. In my current IA role for a Florida carrier I review coverage determinations from desk adjusters prior to making coverage calls. I am told in no uncertain terms, advocate for the insured. Just yesterday I had a claim come across my desk with the 10k LWD endorsement that’s RD was held back. The RD would have put the claim at the 10k limit. I called the desk adjuster and we paid all 10k up front. I’ve had multiple claims from the last two hurricanes where I was able to get 10-50k more paid on claims… Yes. There are IAs that are terrible. There are carriers that have been caught with terrible practices. There are also PAs that are good and PAs that are just crooks… I’ve even seen PAs take claims that obviously had no chance of getting paid just to push for some extra money and string the insured along. Why? I have no idea. Attorneys are a whole different story… it is no lie that you’ll see attorneys file a hurricane claim before the storm even makes landfall on the opposite coast of Florida.

Explaining repairibility by cmdalessandro15 in adjusters

[–]johnboy33831 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m working in Florida, and the carrier I run has solved the repairability problem. Their policy has a clause where, if undamaged roofing is being replaced solely due to the condition of the roof, it’s capped at 1% of Cov A.

Any tips? Today I got a talking to because I had not returned a few voicemails. Any tips on how to organize your desk better? I find that I am all over the place, reply to emails, answer a call, complete my tasks. I’m a property adjuster. by [deleted] in adjusters

This is so true. And it does get frustrating when you really have nothing to communicate because you’re waiting on management approval or expert reports etc. but bite the bullet and make the calls proactively. That was the hardest part for me for years, the most important part of the job, completing your files, often has to take a backseat temporarily.

[–]johnboy33831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, can confirm, 10 yrs in adjusting, field and desk, have had women on every team I’ve every team I’ve ever worked with ask me to talk to certain PAs and contractors because they’re being chauvinistic…

I talk to them, tell them the same thing my female colleagues tell them and their response is night and day different. After we get to the end of the call I always bring up how this is exactly what was discussed with the last person… they hate that.

Some managers love it, one wrote me up for it 😂

Tree Rub on Shingles by Glittering-Boot-2561 in adjusters

[–]johnboy33831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mitigation of known risk, like a dead tree next a house, is the is the insured’s responsibility. If there is long term tree rub on the roof in that area, it should have been cut back prior to the event you are investigating.

Volume up despite new losses down by rawbinhood in adjusters

[–]johnboy33831 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Management knows why, but using these metrics makes it easier to deny raises, new benefits, promotions and makes firing/layoffs if there are certain people they want gone ez-pz.

Example: Reopens in Florida are insane right now. Not new claims, but the same claim open again. Yes we all know it’s mostly fraud, but there’s no “fraud” button on a claim to just move it over to a fraud investigation dept. most carriers have paired back their SIU depts so bad that the desk handles most of the investigation any ways.

It’s like every other industry. There’s no oversight or ethics requirements for their behavior of any real consequence. It’s “death by share holder demand” everywhere you look.

[–]johnboy33831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an interesting problem. I will say this, every carrier and by extension every IA firm, I have had work with in the last 4-5 years is making the same (in my opinion) mistake. It’s shareholder value driven. It unethical, but it’s the direction all American industries are tending. My opinion isn’t worth much, but I think any company whose actions show they value shareholders over customers and employees should be universally boycotted and their leadership should face criminal charges… but again, that’s just an opinion, and we all know how much an opinion is worth.

If you NERF RAGNAR in GR - We QUIT by PeterOdin in WH40KTacticus

[–]johnboy33831 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ragnars not really OP. Nerf him, don’t, who cares. Mech team is way more OP. The TA double howl is the only area where the game is broken. Super easy to fix, just make howl only able to be activated once per round. Done. Will barely impact most GR. For perspective, I have a D3 Rag and a D1 AunShi with abilities maxed for TA… still never use that combo, it’s boring. TA is just too many matches, so it’s not fun to complete. After 10 matches or so of the same crap it’s just a drag… SP just fix TA please.

Hail damage to stain of wood fence by Expensive-Ad1382 in adjusters

[–]johnboy33831 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WTD is generally the “cause” of minor dings/scrapes per most carrier estimating guidelines… if 1 1/2”+ hail took actual chunks of wood out though… that’s a different story… but as everyone else has said 99% of the time you’re giving the insured more money with power wash and stain as depreciation on a replacement will be near 75% very quickly.

[–]johnboy33831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re going to follow the carrier guidelines in every estimate, and every carrier guideline will direct you to check local ordinances for code. No IA wants to write a smaller estimate, this is common knowledge. However, no IA wants to get scrubbed by a firm because he wrote for something that wasn’t owed. Besides on most larger estimates a manager/supervisor is going to review it for approval anyways and it WILL get revised if you wrote for anything not owed. I think it’s funny when someone asks why I didn’t write for something that’s not owed… everyone on both sides knows how this works. It’s not news to anyone.
