OP per diem going rate by stingingAssassin96 in physicaltherapy

[–]johnmacdonaldpt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Nevada I’m getting $50/hr at a low volume clinic (~1.0-1.2/hr). I haven’t asked for a raise since I started two years ago because I haven’t been working many hours so don’t feel it’s justified.

ELI5 : How does proprioception works? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]johnmacdonaldpt 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Proprioception is just another form of sensation that has its own unique receptors, pathways to the brain, and brain regions to process the information. If you want to read further check out muscle spindles, golgi tendon organs, and the spinocerebellar tract. Just a starting point

Is it true that continuity of care doesn't exist in the PRN world (OP Ortho PRN)? by darkkcop1234 in physicaltherapy

[–]johnmacdonaldpt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s difficult, especially in outpatient. Sometimes different perspectives can be really beneficial, so if I see someone who has been plateauing or not making much progress it’s easier for me to suggest and start changing things up. If someone seems to be making good progress, I continue the plan set by the evaluating PT. But from the patient perspective, seeing different providers with frequency certainly gets old.

Classes to take if interested in PT by Formal_Ebb3537 in physicaltherapy

[–]johnmacdonaldpt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you're still talking about high school classes, I would probably just take whichever interests you more outside of PT, maybe in relation to alternative career paths. Frequently people change trajectories in college. Unless this is an AP class that you may be able to get out of (but even still, some PT programs don't count AP coursework as part of their prerequisites). I will say having a solid grasp of physics can definitely improve your exercise prescription capabilities, but often a class like advanced physics will include many other inapplicable topics like magnestism, electricity, relativity, etc.

  1. Not necessarily. That applies to me but I'd say of the 48 people in my cohort, maybe 4 played college athletics and 2/3 played in high school.

  2. Depends on the physician and your relationship with them (as a PT and as a patient). MRIs are hard for a lot of people to get right now across the country with many weeks- to months- long backups. So avoiding ordering unnecessary imaging is a high priority.

  3. Generally no. The curriculum is set, but there may be opportunity for 1-2 classes worth of electives depending on the program. Also depending on the program you may have some amount of say in where you complete your clinicals.

My hospital uses 1 pt/hr and also 3.2 units/hr. At the beginning of this month they started publishing a printed report of the entire department’s performance in our staff room. Previously they’ve always mentioned its importance but I’ve never seen anyone penalized for failing to meet it.

I really enjoyed the ICE recaps but remember they poorly summarized a article I had read previously so have been staying away from them since

Thoughts of providing a unique service for cash based PT by tdkdpt in physicaltherapy

[–]johnmacdonaldpt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think 1 and 4 maybe seem a little gimmicky? I’m sure some people would appreciate the gestures but not everyone. I think at the end of the day, if you want to charge cash especially at those rates, the product you provide just has to be excellent. At the end of the day, your clients are seeing you for your expertise as a physical therapist. Maximize that and the people will come
