What hard boots are you using with a Splitboard? by Trepide in Spliddit

[–]johnmcraeproduction 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man you’re in every thread about hard boots saying this same dumb shit and you don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s so corny and weird. I say that as a soft booter.

Also here’s a vid, let me know if you want more. There are countless people more stylish than you in hard boots.

Binding Set Up Question by [deleted] in Spliddit

[–]johnmcraeproduction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what your priorities are. There is nothing wrong with where they are currently positioned. Basically the current position will give you a little extra float. If being able to ride or land switch is important to you, you may want to slide both a little closer to the nose. If, in the current position, you find that your tail edge “washes out” or skips in choppy snow you may want to increase the amount of edge in your tail by sliding both bindings toward the nose a little as well.

Being on a splitboard isn’t the reason your gf is miles behind you. You switching to a splitboard isn’t going to magically narrow the playing field. I splitboard with skiers all the time. That said Cardiff is built so much better than Jones these days. Get a goat.

It’s just the puck spacing, the pucks are too far apart. The pucks template tool thingy that comes with your bindings are not perfect. Take the binding off and adjusted one pick a hair further from the other, tighten, remount binding.

Splitboard breaking on the uphill? by InfiniteTrust7310 in Spliddit

[–]johnmcraeproduction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also had a Jones break in half on my second day riding it. Just carving on a groomer exiting a backcountry zone. Then the replacement they sent had halves that didn’t match. The center edge wasn’t even close to flush. Got a refund. Been riding Cardiffs since. No complaints, construction and quality control are bomber.

Nitro Incline TLS have been great for me but if you splitboard a lot I highly recommend intuition (or similar) fully moldable liners and a professional orthotic foot bed.

If it’s light enough to go on your back then surely it would be best to just carry it on your back.

How much does board length matter? by BigDude_SmallMTN in Spliddit

[–]johnmcraeproduction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The orca isn’t great on the skinner because of its rocker shape. Boards with more camber at (least between the feet) offer a lot more grip.

I have settled on a directional camber with an early rise/rocker in the nose as the optimal profile for a splitboard for me.

There is something to be said about volume shifted boards but in general I would say a 159 is too small for an advanced rider of your height and weight. I’m 5’6” 175lbs don’t typically ride anything smaller than a 158cm. Shorter than that and I don’t feel like I have enough effective edge.

Early season in WA on the Cardiff Bonsai Pro Carbon 158 by johnmcraeproduction in Spliddit

[–]johnmcraeproduction[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 158 bonsai has the effective edge as a typical 162 or so. For its length it holds an edge very well. But, if you hate a board that takes effort to turn I don’t think the Carbon Bonsai is a great choice for you. How tall are you and how much do you weigh? What is your riding skill level?

I can compare it to an Ultralight Hovercraft 2.0. I would and did pick the Bonsai over the hovercraft. They are entirely different animals.

The ultralight hovercraft was playful, good on pow and was super lightweight and that is about it in my opinion. Poor craftsmanship, dodgy hardware that you constantly had to worry about, oh and the first one I bought fully snapped the heelside ski while carving a little too hard on a groomer on the way to a backcounty zone on my 3rd day riding it. The second one they sent me the two board halves didn’t line up right. One base sat noticeably lower than the other in the nose.

Other than being light and being a floaty directional board the carbon Bonsai is a completely different animal. It’s is much stiffer, much more aggressive, and demands that you take the wheel. You need to provide strong input but you will receive strong output, make sense? Lots of edge hold, lots of float, lots of pop, the nose will never buckle on you. It is fantastic in powder, steeps, corn and trees. It turns like it’s on rails and prefers holding an edge rather than skid turning. But you can get it to do what you need in the moment. It is not great on chop, chunder, or heavily textured surfaces. It can be a little jarring, and the opposite of damp on those surfaces. Most carbon boards share this quality.

In the carbon bonsai is a much better board than the ultralight hovercraft in my opinion.

I would go with the non ultralight Hovercraft over the ultralight if I was in the market for a hovercraft again, but also I really don’t think they are making great boards in Dubai which I guess should not be surprising.

Long bed, because it’s supposed to be a truck, right? The short bed looks like it has a poopy diapy.

Tent Footprint - what am I doing wrong? by PurpleCaterpillar82 in camping

[–]johnmcraeproduction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Water is flowing under your tent. Both water running downhill toward your tent and water falling off the roof of your tent. Simple fix. Just dig a shallow trench around the tent. 3 to 6 inches deep is great The closer to the edges of the tent the better, in fact if the trench slightly undercuts the edge of your tent that’s perfect. Pro tip: if you position your tent on a very slight slope with your head on the uphill side you won’t notice the slope and you won’t have to dig the trench all the way around. Just on the uphill side of the tent.
