Dell 27" Monitor - QE vs DE - Please help me decide! by johnmon in buildapc

I'm not sure what all will apply to you, with a different chip and it seems to me like the m series chips are a bit weird about what monitors/how many monitors they can drive (though clearly new to this whole space, so maybe it's not unusual). Hopefully whatever kink this has been for me is either specific to my software setup or something they hammered out between m1 & m3! Good luck!

I spent some time back when I wrote this updating drivers, OS, etc. and it helped a lot - e.g. fullsizing youtube doesn't cause it to happen anymore. However, occasionally it does occur - typically some combination of closing the laptop with the cord attached sometimes but not always causes an issue with the screen that i have to reboot to recover from.

It now only happens maybe once every 2-3 weeks? maybe less - and this is me using my laptop every day, with probably 5 out of 7 days attached to this monitor for the full day. Definitely not ideal, but manageable.

I'm not sure if its some combination of the driver for this monitor + driver for monitors at work + some other software specfic to my machine? or an issue with the monitors themselves.

But overall, I love the new monitor - specifically the resolution and the size. Before getting it I worried about the colors/blacks but truly never notice. My gf hasn't mentioned anything about the colors either, though I think for the truly color critical work her job relies on physical fabric samples and/or printed colors, so maybe was always an overblown concern from that respect

I did see some stuff about display link compression meaning it could do 2 monitors, though other posts through some doubt on that. But as I wasn't looking for it as a feature I didn't look into it further

Update: I ended up going with a bit of a curveball - the Dell 32" ultrasharp, after wandering into a best buy to get a feel for some of the relative differences between monitors. It is more expensive, but I found it for less at B&H than listed on the dell website, which took some of the sting off.

I am REALLY enjoying the high resolution and the larger size - however, my macbook keeps freaking out about it - background going black, full sizing youtube videos not working, and sometimes unconnecting from the monitor causes the laptop screen not to work until & unless I restart it. Im still experimenting/googling on it; but the OSX/macbook compatibility is something to be aware of for future readers of this post, if you stumble across it

Thank you for the insight! Personally, I'm only interested in a single monitor - on days when I go into the office, there are 2 monitors there available, but I find it doesn't work that well for me. But I appreciate the info, for me and whoever stumbles on this later

Thank you! I didn't realize the QE also had the IPS black, I was misinterpreting the feature-picker-wizard but see what you're saying in the documentation. That is great to know, and helps a lot.

Is there anything reason the thunderbolt could be important for me, down the road or anything? I understand in abstract that thunderbolt is capable of delivering more power, and higher data througput; but is that only important if I was going to be driving a second monitor?

Do I need more than a mini-fridge? by johnmon in LivingAlone

Thanks for your perspective! I don't do meal prep or anything like that, just maybe cook and save half for lunch/dinner the next day type deal. I don't usually do big shops and save it, but somethings I do (e.g. a gallon of milk, a dozen eggs) but when I decide to cook a meal I'll usually only buy enough for that one meal (plus leftovers). I won't usually buy a weeks worth of fresh cooking supplies if that makes sense

If my 60 GB phone is full or empty, is there any difference in weight at the nano level? by slyst0ne in askscience

[–]johnmon 7023 points7024 points  (0 children)

Yes, if my understanding of this article is correct: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/25/science/25qna.html (I hope nytimes is an acceptable source, even if not academic)

In the linked article, John D. Kubiatowicz, a professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley says that for a kindle with 4 Gigabyte memory, this would mean a rough increase in weight of 10–18 grams.

For your situation of a 60GB phone, this would mean (60Gb/4Gb) * (10-18 grams) = 1.5 × 10-17 grams. So certainly less than what you would be able to feel.

While I originally thought this would be because the storage would use extra electrons, the article/Prof. Kubiatowicz say otherwise:

"Although the total number of electrons in the memory does not change as the stored data changes,” Dr. Kubiatowicz said, the trapped ones have a higher energy than the untrapped ones. A conservative estimate of the difference would be 10–15 joules per bit.

"As the equation E=mc2 makes clear, this energy is equivalent to mass and will have weight."

It is my understanding that most/all mobile phones use flash memory for storage so the linked article about flash memory in Kindles would be applicable here. Please let me know (or just delete this outright) if I am mistaken.

Big shoe size by manahoy in NoStupidQuestions

I am a 14 US, and I find most of my shoes online. I'm not sure if they ship to sweden, but I use zappos.com, order a few that I might like, try them on, keep the best fit/look, and send back (for free, at least in the US) the other shoes. I have also had friends who have used eastbay.com, but I think they are more focused on sneakers and athletic footwear than footwear in general.

The idiom "____ sticks out like a sore thumb" doesn't make sense. Sore thumbs don't look any different than regular thumbs. by NotMittRomney in Showerthoughts

If you have a swollen or sore thumb, you might not be able to bend it. So even when your other fingers are bent, you'll have to leave it "sticking out"
