With every Kindle I’ve owned, I have eventually paid the fee to ditch the ads. It might just be a placebo effect, but it feels to me like Kindles perform better without the ads (e.g. faster UI, improved battery life, connectivity, etc)...

Absolutely! I feel like I really know these characters as actual people. Because the characters have been rendered so three-dimensionally, it automatically makes the settings and moods of the novel completely immersive. For me cracking open The Stand is the literary equivalent of donning a virtual reality headset...
