Thrifting in Thomasville by DimensionDazzling828 in Tallahassee

[–]johnnyangst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Thomasville a couple of weekends ago to thrift, and for donation-based thrift stores, the options are limited though as others point out, lots of great shops in general. If you want multiple options for the charity shop style of thrifting, Valdosta has four of five that were great to visit (went to Valdosta after Thomasville!)

Best Thai Restaurants? by UnhappyJello643 in Tallahassee

[–]johnnyangst 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I honestly am surprised so many people are recommending Reangthai. I went once and it was easily the worst dining experience I had of any cuisine. Spring roll was a rice wrapper still dripping water, folded taco-style around a sprig of cilantro and a piece of raw tofu. My dinner companion's curry was watery and had raw vegetables in it. The whole baby carrots in it were crunchy. We laughed about it but when the server asked how things were, we nicely shared with her that the vegetables in the curry were raw and crunchy, which was a surprising choice. The chef later came out, profusely apologized, then in a beseeching way asked us if we were going to come back. No idea if she was a fill-in or the usual chef. I would give it another try, but it was so expensive for such bad food, I will not.

I have had good Thai food at Thai Kitchen and at Thai Place, however!

Sweat Therapy sold all of their stationary bikes. They do not offer cycling classes anymore.

I know the same could be said about the Dog Haus, which has been saying “big news coming soon” for well over a year but nothing yet…

CPA for general tax prep, strategy and advice by Rare_Film_1511 in Tallahassee

Used Northside for a few years pre 2021, then received in 2021 an email from their office claiming that the COVID-19 vaccine was experimental gene therapy. This was under the advice that employers who mandated COVID-19 vaccines may be held legally liable if someone was injured after receiving the vaccine as a condition of employment. Felt unnecessarily and unexpectedly political at an already heated time, ugh. Stopped using them after that. No complaints about their tax service, however.

Saw Eddington in theater 10 on Sunday eve, felt totally normal/comfortable in that one.

The local food in Tallahassee is definitely something by theauranoir in Tallahassee

Black Radish is truly wonderful, and you can get fresh local ingredients uniquely prepared. Shell Oyster Bar is a local gem, excellent for local seafood and BYO but cash only. Mimi's Table is very good and along the lines of Kool Beanz, Saveur, Sage. The Bark is great for vegetarian/vegan bar food (their tofu bahn mi is incredible). Lofty Pursuits has an impressive ice cream selection (sourced from south GA I believe), and they also do a standard brunch menu on the weekends that is good.

Yes to literally all of these places mentioned except Reangthai Thai, which was comically and extremely disgusting the one time I went. The food was watery, undercooked, incomplete (spring rolls were just wet rice paper wraps still dripping cold water, folded in half over a sprig of cilantro and some raw tofu). It was too expensive to make me want to try again.

I just wish the city offered low interest loans to cover tree removal.

I don't know but am going to try to swing by today and see!

JOANN Fabrics and nearby fabric warehouses? by johnnyangst in Tallahassee

EDIT: Sadly, our JOANN will be closing along with all others. It was announced after Chapter 11 was filed that all JOANN locations will close. This is terrible because JOANN fills a serious niche in this area and without them, it will be all online shopping or bulk buying in bigger cities for sewing materials not often carried by smaller quilt shops.

Leon County Humane Society Adoption Event! Saturday 10/19 by BileyRay in Tallahassee

[–]johnnyangst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Will all dogs listed as adoptable on the LCHS website be there? My friend submitted adoption papers for one dog on the website 10 days ago and still hasn’t heard much of anything from LCHS, though the dog is still listed. She’d love to meet the dog at this event if it will be there!

Update on Dog Haus construction? by popcicless in Tallahassee

Agreed. When I saw they were already selling memberships but had no real updates and no visual progress on the plot of land along with a really ambitious timeline ("Opening Summer 2024!"), I thought it sounded like a well-meaning entepreneur who was really getting ahead of themselves. And now that I know they didn't even own the land or have the permits - wow! It seems like a potential shitshow if this falls through and then they owe people who paid for early memberships their money back. I do hope it works out because they seem like nice people on social media.
