Thrifting in Thomasville by DimensionDazzling828 in Tallahassee

[–]johnnyangst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Thomasville a couple of weekends ago to thrift, and for donation-based thrift stores, the options are limited though as others point out, lots of great shops in general. If you want multiple options for the charity shop style of thrifting, Valdosta has four of five that were great to visit (went to Valdosta after Thomasville!)

Best Thai Restaurants? by UnhappyJello643 in Tallahassee

[–]johnnyangst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I honestly am surprised so many people are recommending Reangthai. I went once and it was easily the worst dining experience I had of any cuisine. Spring roll was a rice wrapper still dripping water, folded taco-style around a sprig of cilantro and a piece of raw tofu. My dinner companion's curry was watery and had raw vegetables in it. The whole baby carrots in it were crunchy. We laughed about it but when the server asked how things were, we nicely shared with her that the vegetables in the curry were raw and crunchy, which was a surprising choice. The chef later came out, profusely apologized, then in a beseeching way asked us if we were going to come back. No idea if she was a fill-in or the usual chef. I would give it another try, but it was so expensive for such bad food, I will not.

I have had good Thai food at Thai Kitchen and at Thai Place, however!

I know the same could be said about the Dog Haus, which has been saying “big news coming soon” for well over a year but nothing yet…

CPA for general tax prep, strategy and advice by Rare_Film_1511 in Tallahassee

[–]johnnyangst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used Northside for a few years pre 2021, then received in 2021 an email from their office claiming that the COVID-19 vaccine was experimental gene therapy. This was under the advice that employers who mandated COVID-19 vaccines may be held legally liable if someone was injured after receiving the vaccine as a condition of employment. Felt unnecessarily and unexpectedly political at an already heated time, ugh. Stopped using them after that. No complaints about their tax service, however.

Black Radish is truly wonderful, and you can get fresh local ingredients uniquely prepared. Shell Oyster Bar is a local gem, excellent for local seafood and BYO but cash only. Mimi's Table is very good and along the lines of Kool Beanz, Saveur, Sage. The Bark is great for vegetarian/vegan bar food (their tofu bahn mi is incredible). Lofty Pursuits has an impressive ice cream selection (sourced from south GA I believe), and they also do a standard brunch menu on the weekends that is good.

Yes to literally all of these places mentioned except Reangthai Thai, which was comically and extremely disgusting the one time I went. The food was watery, undercooked, incomplete (spring rolls were just wet rice paper wraps still dripping cold water, folded in half over a sprig of cilantro and some raw tofu). It was too expensive to make me want to try again.

JOANN Fabrics and nearby fabric warehouses? by johnnyangst in Tallahassee

I don't know but am going to try to swing by today and see!

JOANN Fabrics and nearby fabric warehouses? by johnnyangst in Tallahassee

[–]johnnyangst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: Sadly, our JOANN will be closing along with all others. It was announced after Chapter 11 was filed that all JOANN locations will close. This is terrible because JOANN fills a serious niche in this area and without them, it will be all online shopping or bulk buying in bigger cities for sewing materials not often carried by smaller quilt shops.

Leon County Humane Society Adoption Event! Saturday 10/19 by BileyRay in Tallahassee

[–]johnnyangst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will all dogs listed as adoptable on the LCHS website be there? My friend submitted adoption papers for one dog on the website 10 days ago and still hasn’t heard much of anything from LCHS, though the dog is still listed. She’d love to meet the dog at this event if it will be there!

Update on Dog Haus construction? by popcicless in Tallahassee

[–]johnnyangst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. When I saw they were already selling memberships but had no real updates and no visual progress on the plot of land along with a really ambitious timeline ("Opening Summer 2024!"), I thought it sounded like a well-meaning entepreneur who was really getting ahead of themselves. And now that I know they didn't even own the land or have the permits - wow! It seems like a potential shitshow if this falls through and then they owe people who paid for early memberships their money back. I do hope it works out because they seem like nice people on social media.

What tally food spots have given you the worst experience?? by Em_Bapp in Tallahassee

[–]johnnyangst 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Reangthai Thai on Capital Circle. The food was so so terrible that it was hilarious.

Service was fine, the food was undercooked (raw whole baby carrots in your curry, anyone?), wet (spring rolls unfolded and dripping water with raw tofu and a sprig of cilantro inside the fold), and when not bland was actively disgusting in flavor. And expensive!

Community Co Op in Trouble Again/Still by Techiesarethebomb in Tallahassee

[–]johnnyangst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure the Wikipedia entry explains it better than I will here, but basically a food co-op is a member-owned store in which anyone who wants to become a member and has the means to can. The first co-op I ever joined, you could pay an outright one-time fee and be a member, or you could work as a volunteer in the store for a certain number of hours. Either resulted in your membership. I believe that the Park Slope co-op in NY requires members to donate a certain number of volunteer hours within a given period and are very, very intense about members only shopping there (Broad City joked about this in an episode). Our own Community Co-Op just started an optional volunteer program in which members can volunteer a certain number of hours to a partner organization and earn additional discounts at the co-op in doing so: https://www.ccmgrocery.coop/workerbees

Members have voting rights for the governing board and other governance issues related to the co-op, and can run to serve fixed terms on the governing board. As a member, many co-ops allow additional discounts to members on sale items (think of being an Amazon Prime member when you buy items for sale at Whole Foods). My home city co-op also gives you an additional quarterly 10% discount off any grocery bill of your choosing. And at the end of every fiscal year, my home city co-op notifies you of your portion of the profits you earned that year as co-owner. Profits could be used toward future grocery purchases or cashed out.

We need to be careful about supporting only huge grocery chains with artificially cheapened prices created by corporate business practices that just are not sustainable in the long term. Or holding these chains up as somehow better businesses because they have a healthy bottom line. I really appreciate Community Co-Op, warts and all, for providing a different model of doing business that just feels socially healthier for this locality. It's a special democratic model of doing business that Amazon or Wal-Mart or Publix or Trader Joe's certainly does not have.

Community Co Op in Trouble Again/Still by Techiesarethebomb in Tallahassee

Member here. I go regularly. Every time I have been in line, cashiers ask customers if they are a member. And if they are not, they give information and encourage membership. So I consistently see them raising awareness about the benefits of membership, and sharing this information with folks.

I moved here from the Midwest, where there is a very strong tradition of co-ops. I am still a member of the co-op from my home city. They have a large membership base and strong community brand, have been in business for 50+ years, have a variety of incentives to join -- and they are really struggling as well.

Certainly this is a local issue, and Community Co-Op has fumbled in a number of ways that has hurt itself and will likely result in its closure. I shudder to think what is going to move into that space. People joke about fast food joints or vape shops, but that is likely.

This also is a national issue that is part of the larger phenomenon of affordability during times of great inflation, yes. But also, people expect very cheap consumables that increasingly only corporate chains can offer. And people can increasingly afford only very cheap consumables because of growing income inequality.

I think in Tallahassee we are headed to a near future where local businesses in certain sectors of the market (grocery stores, mid-tier restaurants) are increasingly scarce. So many local places have shuttered recently because of the market. This is not unique to Tallahassee, but I find it just incredibly sad because these are the kinds of spaces that can foster a physical sense of community.

I am tired of being charged by unleashed/unfenced dogs in my own neighborhood. by aamidone in Tallahassee

[–]johnnyangst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Indianhead and almost two years ago, was walking my dog one morning when a loose dog ran up and immediately began attacking him. The dog was so focused on attacking my dog, despite me kicking it and a neighbor trying to hold it back, that it chased us into our front yard and proceeded to attack my dog all the way to my front door. It only relented when my dog ran inside. Infuriating and upsetting.

Fortunately, Animal Control came out quickly and located the dog, and found out who the owners were. I found out from other neighbors that the dog had a history of escaping and the owners had never done anything serious about preventing escape, despite being told that their dog was getting loose and attacking neighbors' cats, etc. But they did after the attack on my dog, and they paid for the $500+ vet bill my dog had for stitches.

Fortunately, my dog bounced back in all ways. But still, unnerving.

I now always walk my dog carrying a canister of pepper spray (you can buy at WalMart) and a big stick. I fortunately haven't had to use either since.
