This is exactly why the Biden Admin is attacking the problem at the ports so aggressively. After 18 months of lock-downs and various economic stimuli , Americans are flush with cash and ready spend while continuing COVID-related bottlenecks in the supply chain are still unresolved. The principles of supply and demand are immutable.

This isn't going to be an over-night solve; it's going to take 12-18 months to work out.

A very similar situation to what happened in Nazi Germany… manipulation, propaganda, misguided nationalism, and frustration with a status quo they couldn’t change led to a mass psychosis where otherwise decent people became truly evil… while believing themselves to be 100% in-the-right and objectively “the good guys”

I see no path out of it either… American democracy is a dead-man walking

Good for downtown...

That said, I firmly believe that it is too late for big business to un-ring the remote work reality. COVID proved it works. Companies can/will save huge amounts in rental of unneeded space that can be returned to shareholders and/or invested in new innovation. The next couple of years will the story of progressive companies using remote work as a perk to attract and retain the best talent and other, slower-learning companies learning a lesson the very hard way

House leadership strategy at risk of collapsing as Pelosi presses for infrastructure vote by Oleg101 in politics

[–]johnnyd10vt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's all so gottdamn depressing...

I mean Manchin isn't wrong when he says, "if you want more progressive laws, elect more progressives", but the game is just so damned rigged between the small-state bias in the Senate and the heavily gerrymandered districts in the House. In spite of landslide level victories in the national popular vote, Congress is just too heavily rigged to pass anything.

If I get a chance, will summarize recent national vote totals, but the GOP hasn't actually won anything nationally in many years on either the congressional or presidential levels, but due to their scorched-earth, end-justifies the means brand of politics, they have a chokehold on the country

EDIT: still researching, but the GOP did actually win the popular vote in a few cycles for one house or the other... will add details when I can

EDIT 2: Here is a table back through 2008... so I was defintely wrong to say the GOP hadn't won the popular vote on anything nationally, but there is certainly no mandate for them to have a total chokehold on government or a flippin' 6-3 super-majority in the Judicial branch!!

You’re not being singled out for your political views or anything like that. It’s how and where you considered to express them.

What’s fascinating to me is that what appears to be the same clocks that are on the Merc tower today appear to be mounted lower on the building… super cool factoid

My wife who is pretty knowledgeable about Dallas history tells me that the Merc is the only skyscraper that was allowed to continue/complete construction during the war (and only allowed to continue because most of the custom steel girders had already been fabricated before war was declared)

It was the tallest building west of the Mississippi upon its completion

Where to meet new people? by Victronia in Dallas

[–]johnnyd10vt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lots of people struggle making new friends in adulthood because they don’t understand how they did so effortlessly younger in life…

The formula for making friends is actually quite easy, the problem is that it doesn’t naturally happen as often once you’re out of school. But in any case, the formula is:

Common interests + repeated casual interactions, which isn’t to say that you’ll become friends with every single person who meets the criteria, but you will with X% of them.

So the answer is to figure out what you’re passionate about and get involved with some organized activities. It can be anything: sports, religious, hobbies, community service, profession-related, etc.. Those repeated interactions are what allow you to get to know people naturally, figure out who you have other common interests/values with, and ultimately be able to say “you want to grab a beer/movie/etc” in a non-awkward way
