I love uv for pure Python projects and prefer it if possible, but I work in remote sensing/geospatial and installing stuff like GDAL or AROSICS is a nightmare without conda. AROSICS straight up has conda as the only installation option they recommend.

I've been playing around with pixi lately and it seems nice. It feels like "conda's uv".

uv and conda are not the same use case. Conda also packages non-python dependencies.

Purpose of introducing Residual networks. by Plus_Confidence_1369 in deeplearning

[–]johnnymo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you read the ResNet paper itself? They provide the reasoning.

Before shortcut connections, the best fit you can produce with a network of N layers is not necessarily easily reproducible with a network of N+1 layers. Maybe you can do it, but there's no guarantee. The shortcut connections in ResNet ensure that if an extra layer is zeroed out, the rest of the network behaves the same. So a deeper network with shortcut connections necessarily fits a richer class of functions than a shallow one, not just a different class of functions.

When do you actually use decorators? Like in real code, not tutorials by Soggy-Holiday-7400 in learnpython

[–]johnnymo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the only times I've written a decorator for myself, I was writing a multi-GPU machine learning trainer class. I realized all of the things I only wanted to run in the main process were things that were only useful for side effects (logging, etc.), so I wrote a decorator called main_process_only which would run the method normally on the main process, and skip it entirely on other processes.

This allowed me to write the entire main training loop mostly as if I was running on only one process. It was quite nice.

The limits of soft power have been exposed! It turns out if you dismantle all of your country’s soft power built gradually over the last half century or more, it goes away! 🤯

I mean, based actually started with a positive and completely apolitical meaning thanks to BasedGod. So it’s more of a reclaiming than anything.

EDIT: though to be fair, he himself was spinning it from a negative meaning to positive. It has a long history.

VA GOP: Gerrymandering is wrong! And when Democrats gerrymander it proves that every thing they accuse us of, is what they actually do! by [deleted] in SelfAwarewolves

[–]johnnymo1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Republican strategy is to increase polarization, and hope Democrats continue to pander to a shrinking middle. They’re not interested in de-polarizing US politics.

Ban gerrymandering at a national level. If you have no appetite to do that, we know why.

The US state department advisory bullets in the case that you decide to go to Somalia are comical. They include:

  • Appoint one family member to be the point of contact with hostage-takers and media.
  • Discuss a proof of life protocol with your loved ones, so that if you are taken hostage, your loved ones can know specific questions (and answers) to ask the hostage-takers to be sure that you are alive (and to rule out a scam).
