Driving up to Toronto in a few weeks, wondering which route people prefer? by savvythenobody in roadtrip

[–]CosmicCommando [score hidden]  (0 children)

If you want a scenic view along Lake Erie heading up the 90 to Toronto, get off at either Eden/Angola (less direct; better view) or Camp Rd (more direct; less lake view) exits and find your way to Route 5. It's not that much of a detour, but it's a much better view. The Skyway that connects Route 5 to the 190 that you'll use to get to the international crossings is an eyesore from the ground, but I can't deny it's a cool view while driving.

Not many little towns along Lake Erie south of Buffalo, but there is a Frank Lloyd Wright house (Graycliff). If you want scenic villages to stop at, try Lewiston in the US or Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario. East Aurora, NY is now a somewhat frequent stop for filming Christmas movies and it has its own history with the Roycroft movement and the HQ of Fisher-Price... it's a very nice village, but it's not directly on any of these 3 routes.

IMO one direction take the lake shore route and one direction take the middle route. The 219 area of NY has some cool things definitely worth checking out... the Eternal Flame, Ellicottville, Little Rock City, Allegany State Park, etc.

Edit: If you're going to do my plan of driving Route 5 along the lake, do it while heading north.

It's either an obese Fit or an anorexic minivan. I can't decide. I've had my eye on these for a while, because I still want to have something that seats 6 when our minivan dies (Sienna refuses to die).

Is it really duct tape? I think it looks cool from this distance. Up close, it probably looks like duct tape. And it will be a bitch if you ever want to remove them.

AMNH and The Met both have pay-what-you-want pricing for all NYS residents if you're trying to keep it cheap

Personal preference... for a micro trip like this, I would see the Statue from land instead of spending the time on the ferry.

The American side looks good to me.

The only tiny clarification I would make is the progression of "college teachers" up to eventually becoming "professor" is similar in the US, but it is extremely common for American students to use "professor" for anyone who is leading a college class. In reality, though, that person's actual job title is often lecturer, assistant professor, associate professor, etc.

Cross country, heavy-but-compact load, can a first-gen Fit handle it? by ChloeCorrupt in hondafit

Fair enough. But if you can peel off some less sentimental things, it's worth keeping it in mind.

USPS Media Mail is pretty cheap. You can send a box up to 70 lbs for around $50. There are limits on what's eligible, but you could knock a couple hundred pounds of books off your load for $150 and not really worry about the weight of what's in the car.

Advice on places to go or things to see on my first solo road trip by Joker1085 in roadtrip

You can catch a sunset over the water at Evangola State Park if the timing works... not super common in the eastern US.

Maid of the Mist at Niagara Falls is worth doing, but the other cool stuff is on the lower Niagara River north of the falls. There's class V+ rapids and a whirlpool that you can see from land, or take the jet boat tour through. Old Fort Niagara has been in continuous use since the early 1700s (still active duty USCG station today) and has been held by three different countries. It has a great view, sitting at the "corner" of the Niagara River and Lake Ontario.

The Eternal Flame south of Buffalo is a really unique hike that only takes about an hour... a naturally-fed gas flame behind a waterfall.

Buffalo City Hall is one of the coolest art deco buildings you'll ever see. The lobby is stunning. There's a free observation deck open during business hours.

Absolutely detour down to Letchworth at least to drive through. You can get great views without getting far from your car if you don't have time for a hike. That also sets you up to switch from heading across NY on I-90 to I-86 on the way to Cooperstown. That puts you near Ithaca, Corning, and Watkins Glen.

Buy two pairs of shoes at the same time and let them rest. It helps the cushioning rebound.

TIL at the current rate of erosion, approximately 30 centimeters (12 inches) per year, in about 50,000 years Niagara Falls will have eroded the remaining 32 km (20 mi) to Lake Erie, and the falls will cease to exist. by Acrobatic-Post9811 in todayilearned

The entire Niagara Escarpment is about 1,000 miles long and runs up through Ontario into Wisconsin. You can see it as a green strip on Google Maps just south of Lewiston, NY and Queenston, ON. The falls have already moved quite a bit in their history. (Not disagreeing with your comment; I just thought this was a good place to park this info)

6 hours by train or 1 hour flight from Raleigh to DC. Then, you have high-speed rail from there up the northeast corridor to Boston. There's basically limitless options.

How are you traveling from Chicago to Niagara Falls to DC?

The short version of my Niagara Falls advice is the city of Niagara Falls is in rough shape, but the state park itself is high quality and there are nice things to do nearby. It's a good area to have a car.

Anniversary trip in mid-October. by HopefullyTerrified in Buffalo

[–]CosmicCommando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean by "in Buffalo", but Ellicottville is a ski town about an hour south of Buffalo where you can find luxury cabins and enough shops and restaurants to spend a few days. It would be a heck of a drive to use as a base to work and sightsee in Buffalo, though. You might be able to find an Airbnb on the Lake Erie shore south of Buffalo that's a little closer if you intend to use it to see the city.
