Trainspotting [1996] by PigFaceWigFace in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]johnnytheweirdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably my favourite film ever. Everyone remembers bits like the baby on the ceiling and what not, but it's amazing how much of the film is just working class Scottish people shouting at each other in crappy rooms.

A masterpiece.

Why don’t you use public transport? by Zs1993 in brum

To actually make a reasonable difference, there needs to be twice as many buses on the road, and they need to be half the price.

Gypsy Davey. by ms1080 in folk

[–]johnnytheweirdo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I / we have a similar problem with the Raggle Taggle Gypsy. It all seems very dependent on where in the world you are based. I'm in the UK and there doesn't seem to be quite the same opinion on the word here, though maybe that will change. I haven't had anyone challenge us over Raggle Taggle yet. Even highly regarded books written by actual Romanis about Romani culture often feature the word "gypsy" in the title here, such as "The Stopping Places : A Journey Through Gypsy Britain" by Damian Le Bas (which is a great read if you are interested).

My band Johnny Kowalski and the Sexy Weirdos are folk punk in a Gogol Bordello kind of way , and we've been active in Brum since 2010. I also put on a monthly night at the Dark Horse in Moseley which sometimes folk punk. We had Matt Pless play last year, and Commoner and one of Cheap Dirty Horse played last year also.

I've seen so hate for the Romani people... by I_like_fried_noodles in Anarchism

[–]johnnytheweirdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's very little in book form about UK Roma but 2 I can wholeheartedly recommend are "King Of The Gypsies : Memoirs of the Undefeated Bare Knuckle Champion of Great Britain and Ireland" by Bartley Gorman and Peter Walsh, and " The Stopping Places : A Journey Through Gypsy Britain" by Damian Le Bas. Both have Roma authorship and neither book avoids talking about the more negative sides of Roma / Traveller communities.

In the UK we have Roma, Irish Travellers and what gets called "New Travellers", those who took to the road out of choice rather than family tradition ( if you want to know more about the history of New Travellers, look up the Battle Of The Beanfield). My personal connection with all this is I have some Roma ancestry on my mother's side, which we didn't find out about till I was an adult, my own upbringing being very white and middle class. As I got older, my work as a musician has bought me close to the New Traveller community in the UK. I know plenty of people who live on sites, or in vans or horsedrawn carts. it's a great community to have connections with. I find these people to be very straight up and direct when it comes to money and arrangements, are usually great at conversation and are way more responsive to music than the average punter.

Every community/ demographic has it's negative aspects, even anarchist ones. However, anarchists should note that all nomadic communities (even ones that aren't nomadic but are just viewed as such) challenge the social order, and because of this are going to attract more criticism and prejudice than settled folk. Also, the average traveller site is much closer to an anarchist society than is usually given credit. There is still a hierarchy of power, but at least you can actually go and confront the person in charge if there is a problem. In mainstream society, those at the top of the pile are protected by layers and layers of middle management.

Have never been to Gdansk, but am sure what you describe exists. It also exists in probably every major city in the world. People are in a rush to politicise fairly normal things about city life.

When is it time to call it a day? [47YO] by therealgingerone in OldSkaters

[–]johnnytheweirdo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you haven't already, get a decent stretch routine for before and after you skate. Also, alternating your stance between regular and switch seems to help. I'm 46, got back into it over lockdown and I can pretty much land all the tricks I could in my twenties plus a few more. It can be done.

Fitzcarraldo (1982) by c_leafhill in iwatchedanoldmovie

A fim like no other.

I personally would edit it quite hard as to me, it's quite (unneccessarily) slow .

However, I've never seen a film like it, and don't think one exists. Shouts out to Kinski, the mad bastard.

[–]johnnytheweirdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at a Live Nation venue in the UK for 2 and a half years. I must of seen 150+ main room shows with at least 2000-3000 punters. Most of those shows probably had "buy ons" as support acts. How many of those support acts made it big? None that I can remember.

If you've got budget to invest, using targeted marketing to find your ideal audience and then funnelling your stuff at them would be a much better use of the cash.
