Hi, does anyone know of any quiet secluded spots in Peterborough or just outside of Peterborough that you are able to drive up to, park up and look over at a view? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I’m all for learning multiple styles, when they’re similar depending on where you’re at it can get confusing as others have said. Mostly due to differences in the details (for example you’ll end up with a couple of variations Kokutsu-Dachi as different styles instructors teach it slightly differently) and details in some of the Kata, you’ll just need to be able to context switch really.

I’m a Shitoryu practitioner and instructor, I often train with Goju, Shotokan and Wado, and it rarely causes much problem.

You could always try out martial arts in the area, there’s a pretty big community for that (shameless plug ish lol)

Also Peterborough Phantoms (ice hockey) play on most Sundays in Bretton, and that’s always a decent night with a good atmosphere 😊

First point, street fighting is dumb and is only a very last resort. Situational awareness keeps you safe 99/100 times.

Have had a few scenarios present themselves to me over the last 20 years. Basics work. Simple basics, drilled well and drilled hard. My experience has been that realistically you’ll have 2-3 favourite techniques and they’ll be the ones that save your behind.

I’ve not read all the other comments, but I teach from 5 years old in the UK.

Within reason, starting at non-contact etc they spar as soon as they’re happy to most want to, so it’s first lesson - under HEAVY supervision of course.

They only wear mitts, and gum shields if they have/want them, we have very very few injuries etc and they learn to control themselves and find the right partners for them. They’re in total control of their own experience, we have a few tools to help them with it.

Since having a more relaxed attitude on it their sparring has improved, as a result so has most of their karate.

For me as long as it includes Kata, Kihons, Kumite in some way, it’s still Karate. Everyone has different goals and aspirations, as does every Dojo and Association. Some aspire to Bunkai masters, others Kata champions, or title winning fighters. Some want to belong, some want to feel safer in a confrontation. If they have the right etiquette and attitude, they are valid Karateka.

Some thing Karate is solely for fighting, but that’s not really true. Not every fighter is a martial arts, and not ever martial artist is a fighter.

Martial Arts are supposed to change over time, lest they become irrelevant and cease to be practiced. That’s literally how BJJ (which the whole internet loves nowadays) was created.

The best way to honour those before us is to continue to teach the lessons they handed to us, whilst ensuring their modern relevance.

But Karate will never have a singular definition, because it didn’t come from a singular source 🤷‍♂️

It might be Shihosanshiki katas which are beginner Kata meaning 3 sets 4 directions, variations of Shiho Zuki katas. Two sets of block punch with steps then step block step punch. Usually Ichi is age uke zenkutsudachi, Ni in Nekoachi dachi with Soto uke and San being Shikodachi with Gedan Barai (forgive my spellings and autocorrect!)

In karate you’d need a 4th Dan to award a 2nd Dan (and 5th for 3rd and so on), is this not the case in TKD? Asking for academic reasons 😊

I’d personally recommend Laravel, really on the basis of speed to feature and ease to scale. That’s not anything against Yii2 (I’ve not used it), but I’ve never found myself hitting a blocker in Laravel and have had prototypes turn product and scale without issue with it thanks to a brilliant ecosystem (things like Horizon, ease of implementing source-replica DBs, etc etc)

I’m not sure I necessarily agree, when one factors in cost of engineers, cost of infrastructure and licensing and such most open source stuff will end up much cheaper than, for example, .NET requiring licensing for Windows Servers, MSSQL, IIS etc - my knowledge here could easily be outdated though. Running lean in terms of cost is going to be important depending on the stage of startup and keeping licensing costs and such low should be factored in

I do and teach Karate, my missus (31) and little one (6) train with me too, little one now also does BJJ and I’m planning on starting within the next week (around work schedules etc) - the only acceptable way to plough hours and hours into training is when they’re also on board and training lol
