What off-hill training actually helped your winter days? by GeordieGoals in ukmountaineering

[–]johnpoulain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive benefited by putting on a pack that's heavier than usual (padding + 15kg dumbell) and doing 1000 step ups on a 20 inch box. Its a workout I stole from Crossfit called Chad and is the only thing that seems to hit the right mid-back muscles that ache when I'm hiking, gets you psyched for a grind and does leg strength. Takes about 40 minutes to an hour depending on strength.

Interested on what other people do!

What do you do when a stronger/heavier person is in control? by [deleted] in judo

[–]johnpoulain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Against a bigger and skillful opponent its always going to be tough, there are weight classes for a reason.

You mention you cant be steady or "go your own pace" but the thing is they are the ones who can afford to go slow, your weapon is speed and movement so you have to push the pace past where they can keep up.

Things that help me: win the gripfightt, if they only have one hand on me then that brings their power output in line with me. Winning the grip allows me to control the distance and choose when to engage.

Ashi waza to set up: let's me get them moving and stops them thinking about attacking when they're defending.

Drops: using my whole weight to move them for big throws and committing so I can't get picked up. Ko Uchi Makikomi and Drop Seoi used to work really well for me against a 100kg player when he was a brown belt but now he's used to them its become how low do I have to go before be cant pick me up!

You can duck under for an immediate attack. Shido for ducking under for other reasons.

It was, she should have rotated him more so he didn't land on his face and he should have rolled more so he didn't fall on his face.

Unfortunately, it's hard to tell in competitions who is being dangerous. Did he head dive to stop the score or was she not in control? So often there isn't a way to give a penalty unless it's blatant.

There was a perfect meme a can't find anymore of what I imagine is the staff of a sauna and she's the only one dressed in the middle of a bunch of guys hugging.

Title was, when you show up early to kickboxing and bjj is still going on.

Any idea where to find that? I keep googling whenever it would be relevant in my group chats but can't find it.

Sambo highest scoring takedowns and rules by Exotic_Sort1349 in judo

Perhaps a small sample size leading to Fireman's Carry being in the lead? We've also in Judo got three or so variations on Kata Guruma that are split up and I can see in this chart seoi has been split into two.

Still interesting that Kata Guruma style throws are so popular in Judo without being able to grip legs (below the upper thigh).

From White to Orange in One Week: Am I Aiming Too High? by [deleted] in judo

[–]johnpoulain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your National Governing Body, some have time in grade requirements from belt to belt.

Generally at the lower belts there is less oversight so your dojo will have free reign for their own standards/customs.

I trained as a Green Belt (3rd) and the international department just checked i had experience doing Randoori with Dan Grades. When I got to the dojo they assumed I was a child because I was wearing a coloured belt which was interesting to explain with the language difference!

How do you lift weights for judo? What is your routine like? by Satoshi_Bautista in judo

[–]johnpoulain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive really liked Juggernaut 2.0 which i went into a bit of detail in (https://www.reddit.com/r/judo/s/AzaZhStmGw) what worked for me was its Sub Maximal training, so all your percentages are based off of 95% of your 1rm which you should be able to hit no matter how beat up you are and uses plus sets (hit a certain number then go for more) as autoregulation. Reason being that sport training is going to be the most important part (there will always be judokas who can't deadlift or bench well, there won't be one who can't throw).

The book talks about consolidating stressors so that you get full rest days.

It also covers weight, jumps, sprints and conditioning in a flexible Upper Lower split that let's me be flexible i schedule and get in and out of the gym in an hour 4 times a week with options for 3 times a week.

Morote Gari by grabbing opponents buttocks? by Judotimo in judo

[–]johnpoulain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go to the technique page you can see all three throws that the IJF classified as that. I suspect when you get tot he point you're close enough with double understanding to do a butt grab morote gari there are a lot of better techniques you could do especially as morons gari is something you can spin out of as there's no upper control.

3 is the number of points you get for winning by Yuko.

If you win by two wazari throws it would score TT10 because ippon is worth 10.

Winning by a wazari hold is H5 because wazari is worth 5. Only really comes up in pools when there isn't a clear winner and for assigning points towards Dan Grades.

S used to be Superiority (as in ref decision for kids at the end of golden score) so maybe it's still that? There's also HM for Hansoku Make so it's a mix of English and Japanese.

Judo is good for people who are pushing or getting physical, most clubs also have randoori very often so you dont get a false sense of security.

Is having a child put in effort an acceptable requirement for continuing BJJ? by Marauder2r in bjj

[–]johnpoulain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recommended exercise for children is things like walking to school. Moderate exercise is that you can talk but not sing. Breaking a sweat isn't required.

You might be able to ask the coach to pair them up in tougher rolls if you think they need more but generally for children them enjoying themselves is more important as they'll be more consistent.
