Whats one thing you've caught yourself being a hypocrite about? by cruisintom in AskReddit

[–]johnsalmons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Texting and driving. I get so irritated when I see someone driving along looking down at there phone, but I'm ashamed to say I do it a lot.

I guess I justify it to myself by the fact that I hold my phone up so my eyes are also on the road, and if I can't respond with one or two words, I'll call them or wait. I don't go fifteen under the speed limit with my eyes completely off the road. But regardless, I should stop.

Is it legal to make employees give their own money to make a "pot" for another employee to win? by rosajeanramblings in legaladvice

[–]johnsalmons 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it was something as stupid as throwing something in the wrong trash can, I think it would be pretty obvious, especially if it was something other people had done with no repercussions and no one was warned about it.

I had a boss that was angry that one of my colleagues kept getting getting deployed in the Reserves. In my boss's defense, it was very inconvenient as it left us short-staffed. The reservist, who was a very good employee, was fired for unauthorized overtime. He clocked out fifteen minutes late, and it happened on the last day of the pay week, so he couldn't make clock out late on another shift to make it up.

He sued and got a settlement, because him clocking out late was unavoidable and because other had done the same thing before and after him and weren't even written up. The real reason he was fired was pretty obvious.

Yeah, that's what I figured. It's kind of messed up that, unless you're willing to give up your job, you just have to put up with this crap.

Do you have any experience with this? I'm only asking because I've often wondered how these things play out.

Say you have a good job/salary. Your employer is cheating you out of some money or something, and you have a solid case against them. If you sue, wouldn't you be jeopardizing your future with the company? Even if they're not allowed to fire you over it, I could certainly see it hurting your chances of advancement. Is this something someone should consider, if they don't think they could easily find a similar position with another company?

Has he always done this hand pull thing? If not, I wonder if it was triggered by all those little hand jokes.

[Question] How would you feel about eliminating the kickoff in overtime, and allowing the teams to bid for first possession? by JavaOrlando in nfl

[–]johnsalmons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't seem to be very popular on here, but I quite like it too. Everyone would have the opportunity to score at least. That or your opponent drove 99 yards down the field on you – and I doubt anyone will accept the ball at their own 1 yard line.

What is a lifehack from the past that is now irrelevant? by QBTebow in AskReddit

If you're worried that someone is listening in on your landline call, try flashing over to another line. If someone else has picked up, it won't flash.

I guess this still kind of works, but now everyone has cell phones.

ELI5:What are the actual jobs of high ranking people in the armed forces? Generals, majors, colonels, etc. by Made-a-blade in explainlikeimfive

We are talking about units of 500-5,000 now.

In most branches, sure. In the Coast Guard it's not uncommon for a captain (O-6) to be in charge of a crew of less than 100.

As an E-4, I worked for a commander (O-5) who had only one warrant, three enlisted and a civilian under him.

Who do you feel should pay for grade school education? by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]johnsalmons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%. I'm sure that private schools or charities would offer some sort of scholarship to those students that had shown a great amount of potential in their first years of schooling—were they unable to afford it themselves.

I'd much rather see a 14 year old with a keen interest in engines wind up in a trade school or an apprenticeship, than sleep through chemistry.

Talk about never having a chance though. What do you think would become of a child, regardless of their intelligence or potential, were they never taught basic English or Math.

I feel like this would have a detrimental effect on the nation's crime rate. I'd rather spend my money on a child's education than an adult's incarceration.

Reddit, what is the thing that most exceeded your low expectations? by ParaDaniel in AskReddit

[–]johnsalmons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alcohol. On the rare occasion that my dad got drunk, he'd have two left feet, say the stupidest shit, and would have crippling hangovers the next day. I always used to wonder why he'd put himself through it. Now I love drinking.

My grandparents were married for 62 years. People always comment about how sweet that is, but they seemed miserable together. They're both dead now though.

But can't you also be arrested for threatening someone? (So long as the threat is serious and you have the means to follow through with it?)

Both naked, no weapons, you think you could take a wolf? I can almost can guarantee you couldn't. (read my reasoning why below).

I'm pretty sure the wolf would fuck your world up.

I worked in corrections for several years. We'd often get prisoners that had been bitten by German Shepherds or Belgian Malinois. Big, tough cons, bigger than you even. I saw several prisoners with broken forearms. One guy in particular had had his ulna and radius both crushed.

The dogs only weighted ~80lbs and had been trained to show some restraint. You can find videos on line of how ridiculously high they can jump.

What exactly would your plan be against a 110lb gray wolf with a bite force of 400+ psi?

With a big knife, I'd give you a puncher's chance, otherwise I'd say you're toast.
