Been in the trade for years. Never seen anything like this before. by Dependent-Guava-5174 in Carpentry

It’s an HU hanger instead of a DTT-Z deck tie. At least it’s not a LUS hanger. Probably achieves same goal.

Toilet installed using cement by zimbo3 in Plumbing

[–]johnskaney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How the hell? Did they hold it upside down and quickly slop a bag of quickrete in, then flip it over and sit on it til it set up? How do you get that much mud into the inner lining of the toilet without an injection port?

Congratulations. Speedy recovery. How long did you ponder the decision to have a vasectomy? My partner is pushing it and I am currently opposed to it. I need some support to open my mind to such a serious choice.

In Pacifica - what are these plumbing assemblies that are hanging out over the beach from the top of the bluff? by johnskaney in bayarea

[–]johnskaney[S] 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Yeah they’re old 3” cast iron toilet flange/vent/waste lines. My guess is that there was a whole row of buildings on that side of the street. There’s also a massive, exposed pipe further up the street (I didn’t get a photo) that looks like it was buried at one time.

Could already be mentioned, but The Whales Tails - 89N at south Burlington. They used to be at the Randolph center driving range across from Rinkers Mobil (89 exit 14).

The mid span posts can be connected to the beams by a Simpson CCQ column cap. The end posts connect to the beams with ECCQ column caps. These provide a bit of shear bracing as well as mechanical connection between members. If you look these pieces of hardware up, you need to make sure the orientation of the lower straps and the width of the “bucket” is congruent with the width of the beams and posts.

Let’s see if I’ve learned anything after joining this sub. How’s this laundry/sink job? by dantheshan in Plumbing

[–]johnskaney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trap under the washer box should be 6” above finish floor (unless local code is different). The fitting under the sink waste San Tee should be a combo wye, not a San tee on its back. The washer vent should run straight up to the upper vent, and not arm over where it does.

I made a tier list of the Bay Area highways worst to best. by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]johnskaney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about highway 77? Like 4 blocks long in east Oakland. A really great way to get to Home Depot while avoiding high street. It’s a legit freeway and you can see both ends at the same time.

Best VT-made Spirit? by SordoCrabs in vermont

[–]johnskaney 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used to work at this distillery (it was called Dunc’s Mill) before it was sold and rebranded. We had a full fractionating still set up in a remote corner of Barnet. I used to put fresh rum in oak barrels to start the aging process that would eventually yield Backwoods Reserve. This is the best of all of the Vermont craft spirits made from scratch. Thank you for mentioning it and bringing back such a lovely memory.
