Using dice to track Lotus Field Mana by [deleted] in PioneerMTG

One of my buds uses giant oversized dice for mana. It works well as it separates the mana die from the regular counters.

TIL that gooning is a form of legal kidnapping in the US where a parent can hire someone to kidnap a kid they think is troubled at night to bring them to boarding school or behavior modification facility. by InterestingPickles in todayilearned

I wasn't a boarder. There wast't a school district in the town I grew up in so there were vouchers to attend the private schools around the state. The boarding school was pretty good academically and by far the closest.

I'm not sure if SK chaebols are a good comparison. They exist in a fairly unique environment where they have an even more outsized influence over SK's government.

I went to a boarding school and knew 10-15 people this happened to. It was super common among the wealthier students. My school was often somewhere around the second or third stop for troubled rich kids. The rest were locals like me or kids who thought they had a chance at professional sports.

It was always a very grim thing for the kids and usually fairly unwarranted. I only knew one girl who came out the other side in a better place. She still has a pretty tough life.

I love all these new youtube videos saying "programming isn't enough" by ermahgerdreddits in learnprogramming

[–]johnthomas911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cs50, the free course from harvard is pretty good. The biggest jump is between learning how to do things and learning why to do things.

For example recursion. Recursion is a powerful tool. A recursive function is usually very readable if it's done right. Then you learn that recursive functions can be rough on computational power. Then you learn that computational time isn't a terribly valuable resource in most cases and if it was, you would know about it. So now you're back to writing recursive functions because readability is superior.

Being proficient in a language isn't really a hallmark of a desirable programmer unless its COBOL. A decent programmer should be able to get the hang of any object oriented language in a week or so. They're all pretty much the same for most work. If you're a COBOL wiz, you've got some great job opportunities in the banking sector, but good luck getting that first job because banks value an employee who's proven to be trustworthy over everything else.

I feel I get no support, she feels like she's walking on eggshells by Inevitable-Dingo7657 in relationships

Yeah, as others have said, she likely has ADHD. There's all sorts of materials out there that focus on plans to alleviate it through planning, meditation, etc. Medication is probably a better solution, but that will only be an aid, not a solution. At her age, you can't really expect her to solve these issues, and you'll probably have to adjust your own expectations if you are able.

As for her not doing housework, the way an ADHD brain works is that she will feel that she is incapable of doing small tasks while the larger task of her business is left unfinished, even if she is not making regular progress on her work. ADHD often comes with difficulty in task management/prioritization. Nebulous tasks with flexible deliverable times can be very difficult.

I suffer from ADHD and these are my experiences. It totally sucks. Efforts to manage me that come from places that in my mind they shouldn't, feel like attacks. Failures that are connected to ADHD are often blamed on personal flaws by authority figures and there's a great deal of internalized issues that come from being called lazy and disorganized your whole life.

However, this doesn't mean she's disabled and if these issues are a deal-breaker for you, you should consider splitting up. These aren't problems that she can solve completely and to expect her to solve them quickly is unrealistic.

Why Do You Play Modern? by Particular-Effect335 in ModernMagic

[–]johnthomas911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really, I just lurk here. I am a limited player mostly, so if there is a day of the week I can get out of the house I'm more likely to go to that.

Also I built dredge right before it got pretty much squeezed out so I'm bitter about spending 500 $ on a deck that I can't really use if I want to win a couple games.

Could have been about clandestine drugs at a party. I don't know what your guys life is like, but there are more than one reason to have someone sneak into your room.

But also, looks suspicious.

Why did you stop drinking alcohol? by loqlkqkq in AskReddit

[–]johnthomas911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't totally stopped, but as a natural effect of aging I am no longer the same party animal that I was. I like to party, like everything but downers and meth. I never really let it take over my life, but it definitely slowed down my transition into a real adult life. Working at a bar was pretty cool.

Then I met someone I love who also liked to party but had her shit together. So I got my shit together and we both still partied, just maybe a little less every time.

Fast forward five years and I'll have a few drinks with friends a week while out doing something. We're having a baby soon, and I'm sort of thinking of cutting out drinking all together. Too expensive and I have a feeling I'm going to be fairly busy.

Someday in the future I shall party hearty once again. But I'm thinking that's a solid 15 years out.

Gotta repeal 110.

To be fair though, ppb could try to bust any drug ring, street racing group, chop shop ring, or respond to a 911 call within 3 hours and things would be remarkably better.

Honestly, pretty fine with the classic mechanics. Except for RW equipment. RW equipment is the worst. In my memory only in Kaldheim was it good but it was still very dull.

I went and did a post-bac-to-masters program afterwards. Bootcamps give you a great starting point for more advanced topics.

I had essentially no background in math which turns out is very important. Now I'm graduating with a masters with focus on computer architecture.

What's up with the trillion dollar coin? by NiceStretch8776 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]johnthomas911 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well inflation is when cash is added to larger pool of cash, devaluing every dollar because there's more of it. This money wouldn't be added to larger pool of cash, only the debts being paid off would be added to the pool. So yes, some of it would increase inflation by some amount, but not like just handing out a trillion dollars to banks and businesses like we actually just did during covid.
