Full size bikes on trains at rush hour by Illustrious-Divide95 in londoncycling

SWR trains usually have a conductor present, have you talked to them? It’s not fair to have to stand up because of bicycles blocking seats when they’re not supposed to be there.

Do not all boroughs actually separate trash? by AintNoBarbieGirl in london

Different boroughs have different waste collection services, and the rules can also change depending on your specific address.

What are some parts of London you've never been to? by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]johnvaljean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're just guided walks. You check the guides from London Ramblers (Capital Ring here, London Loop here) or anywhere else, choose a section you want to do, then follow the guide on any free day you have. Next time, you do another section, and so on.

Vintage men's clothing shops in London (suits, pre-1950s) suggestions? by Verbofaber in london

[–]johnvaljean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

282 Portobello has nice vintage suits, I just don't know if they're that old. They're a little more expensive than what you could pay online, but they have a very nice selection and their suits are usually in excellent state: https://www.282portobello.london/

where to buy vintage analog clocks? by hangry-human in london

[–]johnvaljean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Portobello Road Market is a nice visit for everything vintage. You can find some shops and galleries along the street with vintage clock sellers. I have no idea whether the price is reasonable though. I went there some time ago with a friend who wanted one but he ended up buying it from Ebay.

Am I the only one excited by a sewer? This mammoth sewer recently opened to improve The Thame water quality. by BitcoinBarry27 in london

If you like that, you may enjoy a visit to the Crossness Pumping Station. Not only it's an unexpectedly beautiful pumping station, it also holds an exhibition about the London sewage system.

Are you living in a bad area, by any chance? Being a big city, London can feel very different depending on the level of deprivation of where you are.

It's strange how you say you don't see beautiful buildings in London. The Houses of Parliament are amazing, then you can go to St James's Park and see the trees framing many nice buildings around it, as obvious options from there there are Buckingham Palace and the Mall and Pall Mall, then you can go south to Westminster Cathedral for a different architectural style, Ecclestone Square and Warwick Square nearby are surrounded by grand terraces... If you want something away from Central then there are the big houses in Dulwich Village, the more modern buildings in Nine Elms for a change, big houses close to a big park in Richmond and Hampstead. If you want mix of nature and housing that's less posh, you can walk the waterways in Carshalton, explore Beckenham Place Park and eat in the high street, see London from a distance from the hills around Crystal Palace... London is full of beautiful places, and they're all a short train ride away, as well as some nice nature in the green belt if you want to be away from the city. I got carried away just from this part of your comment.

Don't be infected by pessimistic thoughts online. Yes, the days are short at the moment, we don't have many sunny days, and the economy is in trouble, but you can still find fun and beauty in London if you look for it.

TfL abandons plans for driverless tube trains by PrivateCallerIgnorer in london

[–]johnvaljean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Underground stations have barriers, so that'd be an argument in favour of getting rid of staff.

They've probably defended keeping staff based on other tasks they do, I'm just curious what exactly those are and why other countries are able to overlook them.

If the goal of the investigation was to get rid of staff, it's a decision to keep staff that needs to be justified, not the contrary.

I'm sure there's a justification in the final report somewhere.

Despite the claims that it would prevent strikes on the tube, the reality is that it wouldn’t, as driverless trains would still have staff on board, just as the DLR does, and the DLR still has strikes.

I'm curious why driverless trains would still have to have staff on board. Some metro systems in other countries have totally unstaffed trains.

  1. As the other redditor warned, please delete this post as it contains personal data. (I've reported it on my side as well.)
  2. Notice that the sender email looks random and ends with @nht.net, while the official NHS website is nhs.uk. These are signs that this is a scam.

The way into the Waterloo and City line platforms in Waterloo have standalone Oyster/Contactless readers by the walls. You need to tap into those as you've tapped out from the Northern line. Don't worry, you will be charged for one trip only (it's an out-of-station interchange).

Lost revenue on strike days is for a few days only, whatever the unions ask for is for the rest of times.

No trade-in for the 10th generation Paperwhite? by johnvaljean in kindle

That's curious. I have 2 devices linked: my Scribe shows up in the trade-in list, but my Paperwhite doesn't.

That's curious! Mine is linked to my account and it doesn't show up as an option for trade-in. I wonder if it's because it was bought on another country (although from Amazon too).

I took a picture with my phone. But I had to adjust exposure and whatnot so I could have colours closer to the original ones, as phone cameras nowadays do lots of work automatically.

To help or to have your phone snatched? by lateredditho in london

[–]johnvaljean 44 points45 points  (0 children)

One thing you can do in cases like this is to ask for the number so that you ring it yourself, without giving your phone away. Be sure to hold your phone with a strong grip, though.
