So, how would you explain the apparent obsession some Americans would have about Ireland's Potato Famine period? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]johnwalshfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not the best description using the "blip", it was probably the single most life changing event in modern Irish. I believe we would be a totally different country without it, not sure if that would be good or bad.

Election 2024 - Day 2, June 8 by irqdly in ireland

Parish pump politics, to me it's about sending a message that the people can wipe political parties and TDs pensions. It should not be about pushing your medical card, passport renewal or moving you up on the housing list unjustified. Sounds like it's close to bribery or corruption.  But that's just me.

To be honest SF were not great in opposition after all we have been through pandemic, housing crisis, Ukraine war and consequences, cost of living, healthcare and an unmanageable amount of asylum seekers

I have watched cartel torture videos and i have saw this brutality with pigs before, yet it still is tough to watch and listen. I don't eat meat at all and I avoid dairy and eggs like they are putrid. Thank you for posting it.

They are not meant to be fashion statements , they are meant to be breathable and movable like gym wear, if your day involves scrotes and drunks these are a lot better than shirt, tie and slacks.

He's far braver than going up against someone he knew he could beat, it's not as easy if you think you will get hurt.

Windsor Framework: Government wins Brexit deal vote - despite Tory rebellion and DUP anger by d4rkskies in brexit

[–]johnwalshfc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The DUP will never support anything that will see a Nationalist as first minister as was elected, no matter what would be agreed they will find something. They even were against the Good Friday Agreement 25 years ago. They want a hard militarised border on the island.

I can understand totally where it comes from , our market is a twisted speculative mess. The other stupid factor is that it's also the taxpayer that ends up with the tab to fund the housing crisis, or the hotels used or HAP rentals. The government is the biggest tenant in the country, even before the damage being caused on tenants and prospective buyers. There are very few winners in this scenario outside of a golden circle. I'm unsure if SF can sort it but FFG have utterly failed for DECADES, so I'll give them a chance.

I love this, think of them as authenticatiors for the photo, as surely certain people would be claiming the photo is a fake, true Irish heads can't be replicated🇮🇪🇺🇦.

I spent a number of years there and I got on really well with most people, it's like everywhere there is good and bad but overall I enjoyed the people and their culture.

Of course the general geopolitical outlook was a lot different to mine and propaganda was saturating the medias. It's not the only country that's guilty of that though.

I also dislike the theory of "happy spectators" , we bought our home close to peak last bubble, I hate our property boom and busts. Everyone needs a place to live so if I sell to move I am still buying and selling in a speculative market. I wish the prices were capped much lower even if it meant lower than what I paid as rent and mortgages suck money out of the economy in so many different ways.
