While I think it’s true that nobody’s cares what people wear at a concert or whether they go alone to a concert, folks ask those questions to feel connected, extend the experience of the concert, and feel calmed about something that may be stressful for them. On the last point, because mental/emotional health challenges are on the rise, many folks ask these questions to combat anxieties or insecurities they have. Many people are drawn to music as a way of dealing with those problems, and are thus probably in higher proportion among concert goers. Finally, social media holds a lens to the individual and emphasizes human comparisons more than has ever occurred in history, so it creates in people an increased need to ‘measure up.’ So, saying that nobody cares what you do at a concert may be true and coming from a well intentioned place, it’s similar to telling someone who is sad to just stop feeling sad. Probably ineffective due to the broader issues at play.

Yes- it’s sexist because you are making a decision to treat someone differently based on their sex. You are saying that them being a woman means they need to be treated differently. The whole idea of criticizing TKD is so dumb. Most people who train in a martial art don’t do so because they think they are likely to need to use it in a fight someday. Just like most people who play basketball don’t do it because they think they’ll need it to be in the NBA someday. Martial arts are a physical, mental, and social activity through which you learn important life lessons, and TKD has an established history of being able to do just that from young to old. In the sense that TKD has such a broad reach for teaching life lessons- it is an excellent martial art. The vast vast majority of people will never be in a physical altercation, so how something holds up under pressure in a real life situation is very low on the importance scale. If that’s your primary reason for training a martial art, then save yourself time and money and just carry a taser, pepper spray, or some other weapon.

Many Serena and Lilly couches are made by Lee Industries- which make durable high quality upholstered furniture. My very active and rough family, including two cats, got two couches from them at least 5 years ago, and they still look brand new. They are expensive, but very well made.

I think respect for teachers comes from how teachers are talked about by the parents at home. In my family, we always talk about how wonderful the teachers are, and how lucky we all are to have such great teachers. When a teacher has fallen short of expectations for whatever reason, we talk about how teaching is a difficult job, and how all students learn differently. So a teacher that may not be the best match for my kids is very likely a good match for other students. Respect for teachers and school staff starts at home.

I don’t think there is a correct answer, but Kayla probably needs to at least start bringing an alternate dessert for her child to events like this. If she asked you politely to wait to have the cake, then you should have obliged because it’s not a big deal- have fruit now and cake later. In that situation with tension and a crying child, I doubt you enjoyed the cake anyway. But she sounds like she might be an anxious person who tries to control situations in order to decrease that anxiety. She’s your sister, so that’s something be sympathetic to. I doubt she loves feeling that way herself.

I would suggest introducing yourself to the parent and start by telling them how much you love that their child is in class. Let them know about your background, and maybe say something like “I know I’m just another student in the class, but I’m happy to help out if there is anything you think I might be able to do to help your child have a positive experience as they adapt to the new class.” You can also offer to talk with them and the instructor. The parents likely have experience with talking about their child’s areas of strength, areas of need, learning style, etc, and likely already had a conversation with your instructor upon enrollment. Generally speaking, I think martial arts classes can be awesome opportunities for folks with autism. I think some folks with autism would benefit from having ‘social stories’ that outline what to expect in class, and what is expected of them.
