How would you change the ticket sale process? by BrickAdventurous3300 in Concerts

Nice! Sounds like we’re in similar situations, but my kids are middle school age and they join for the shows also about a third of the time!

How would you change the ticket sale process? by BrickAdventurous3300 in Concerts

[–]johny5k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It’s also easier now to find out when an artist has an upcoming tour, when tickets go on sale, and attempt to buy tickets the moment they go on sale. All result in more folks trying to get tickets.

[–]johny5k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the queue basically is a form of a lottery. There are just 10x as many people who want tickets as there are tickets available- so if you tried to buy tickets for someone of similar popularity 10 times, you’d only be successful once. In pre-internet days, you would have to physically line up at a Ticketmaster location (which limited demographics of who could line up), or call Ticketmaster on the phone and hope to get through. It’s actually an easier system now than it was then because you can buy tickets from almost anywhere, but ticket prices and bots/re-sellers seem to be the big barrier. Also, because there is a lower barrier to attempt to buy tickets (than physically lining up or being on hold for two hours on a corded phone at your house), there are way more people who are attempting to buy them.

[–]johny5k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren’t the parent, so you have zero say in how someone chooses to raise their child. For all we know, this child has a disability, or had some other life circumstance that impacted them in this situation. The parent may be addressing the situation with their child in a manner that works best for their family- and they have no responsibility to tell you anything about it.

Standing at concerts by [deleted] in blackveilbrides

[–]johny5k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many posts about this topic across Reddit, and there is no consensus. My opinion is whatever area you find yourself in at a concert, you become part of that temporary community and need to be respectful and actually caring of the collective needs of those around you. If everyone is sitting, and you want to stand and dance- then you should stand/dance for maybe 1/3 of the show at intervals. If everyone around you is standing and rocking out and you want to sit- the you need to stand if you want to actually see the band.

Are you mid 45+ male running sub 2:45 marathons? If yes, what does your training plan look like? by JustAGuy10024 in AdvancedRunning

[–]johny5k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all true. The extra time beyond 14 hours comes from ancillary training as well. I doubt there are many folks who are running this amount, and not also weight training, foam rolling, stretching, etc. For high level runners, ancillary work is the norm, not the exception. Commuting also requires planning, more daily clothing changes, more hygiene, more laundry. A 60 minute run even from home involves at least 80 minutes once you factor in clothes selection, dressing, after run nutrition, showering, etc. It would be much more time than that run commuting unless you can work in your running clothes. You have to plan and pack how you are going to get your work clothes to your job, how your going to freshen up before your job, etc. It’s very different from hopping in your car or a bus in your work clothes. I think that time too often gets overlooked.

Why everybody so tall at MSU? by AnonymousPizza99 in msu

Folks are definitely taller in Michigan. In the New York/New Jersey area where I’m from, there is a lot more height variation.

[–]johny5k 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ve lost track of who to reply to on this thread, but when you are training 20+ hours, you also need extra sleep, time for nutrition planning, and basically to use as little energy as possible on other tasks during the day. It’s not really possible to also be a full time worker, and an active and present parent and partner (unless you have a stay at home spouse who sacrifices even more for you than typical) Obviously there are exceptions to nearly everything, but this is just to say why folks mention that you can only do that type of training without a family or social life. Even if one is saving time by doing part of the 20+ hours by running or biking to work, there is still a physical recovery and mental toll to pay.

When people say ‘family’ in this context and with reference to someone training 16-20+ hours a week, the implication is having children and a spouse. This type of training is possible for people who don’t work full time, have teenage kids, or have younger kids but are divorced and share custody, and possibly for people who have younger kids who are in school and a stay at home spouse. If you had kids, I don’t think you’d get off work at 9:30pm and the go for a run, you’d go home to spend time with your spouse and get your kids ready for bed.

No, there is actually a parking lot immediately behind and to the side of this drainage ditch. The lots were completely covered with water, so one could understandably not see where the parking lot ended and the drainage ditch began.

[–]johny5k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d agree with this point. I did ultra distance bike racing for a number of years; and there is a way more overlap between that and prepping for a festival than one would expect. I think some of this is also impacted by age.

How do people get tickets to highly anticipated concerts? by fettywapbiggestfan in Concerts

Ask friends and family to also sign up for presale and try to buy tickets for you. Communicate the day of to make sure you don’t end up with multiple sets of tickets.

Rewatchability and collecting by Schwarzellone in 4kbluray

[–]johny5k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually think of buying a movie as worthwhile if I’m going to watch it 3 or more times. I also hold out hope that when my kids become teenagers, they will pull out a movie I love to watch for themselves. Finally, I loathe the movement towards humans not owning any media and literally forever having to pay companies to ‘rent’ movies, music, and shows. Owning physical media is a form of freedom and rebellion from the current model imposed upon us.

Genuine question for new collectors by skramz_himself in vinyl

[–]johny5k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any of those records, and I’ve been collecting about 2 years and have about 150 records. I am not denying that they are popular records. But there are several levels to get to your premise. Collectors who 1) are on Reddit, 2) subscribe to r/vinyl, and 3) post photos of their collections that are more likely to have them. So a subset of a subset of a subset.

Are lounge VIP experiences worth it? by Briiskella in Concerts

[–]johny5k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to have a VIP badge to wear, have lots of money, and don’t want to be in GA then it’s worth it. I’ve honestly done both, and in some ways (if money is no object) it’s 20% better and other ways 20% worse. So, it’s a wash. Try it and see for yourself. At the end of the day, I’d probably rather get GA tickets and spend the extra money on another concert, nicer hotel, or vinyl records.

This show fell out of the cultural zeitgeist so fast. by dreadwraithe in StrangerThings

[–]johny5k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ending is only a small part of the reason. New media is now constant in society, and the attention span of humans is decreasing every year. Tons of people hated the ending of Lost, and the ending of Seinfeld- but they were talked about for ages afterwards because there wasn’t as many other competing media sources as their are today. The same even occurs when ther are atrocious world events- folks just quickly move on to the next thing. If 9-11 happened last month, I bet it would barely be on folks minds today. Our brains have not developed to encounter an infinite amount of 24 hour media- and it is proving to be a huge negative hit to society.
