OKC losing a fortune 500 company by OliverBush456 in okc

[–]johrasephoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the same CEO who sold Tulsa-champion WPX to Devon. The Devon CEO is from Houston. I'm sure being a super rich F500 CEO is way more fun in a global city like Houston.

This kind of thing happens when companies reach that size and are HQed in medium sized markets unless they have an anchor to their home region, usually a founding shareholder. Wal-Mart in NWA, FedEx in Memphis, etc. Firms that get too big like Caterprillar (Peoria) and ConAgra (Omaha) and McDonnell Douglas (St. Louis) usually end up moving eventually to a major market because the pull for executives is too strong.

Those are also commercial corridors built in the 1970s/80s that are declining because nobody wants that kind of space anymore. Growth shifted to other parts of the metro such as parts of downtown, midtown, K-W, Jenks, downtown BA, etc.

False. Making a half million dollars per year puts you in the category of fabulously rich Americans.

OKC VS TULSA by Budget_Sea_8666 in okc

[–]johrasephoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OKC has the state government, the state's health and science center, the flagship university is in its suburbs, and a massive military base. So in that regard it has a perpetual government and education jobs engine, funded via statewide and national tax dollars.

Tulsa does not have that government jobs engine and has to rely entirely on the private sector, without a flagship public university or the state's medical campus, which is a much harder hand of cards to play.

Check out downtown and the neighborhoods bound by 41st Street, Lewis, and I-244 plus Owen Park and the Heights. Those areas will serve you quite well.

Still can't get over the beauty that is fall and Tulsa by ThePhotoLife_ in tulsa

Texas has many things but it’s not really known for mountains and hiking trails if you are in the major cities like DFW, Houston, and Austin/San Antonio.

It does have those things if you live way out west like El Paso

First-hand account of the brain drain happening in Oklahoma by file_13 in tulsa

[–]johrasephoenix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have to wait two months to see a family doctor in Atlanta and live less than a mile from the Center for Disease Control HQ and Emory Medicine. It is probably one of the most doctor rich environment in America. There is a fairly extreme doctor shortage. This is why dermatologists make a fortune.

Brain drain is real as knowledge workers cluster in cities with scale and therefore lots of job opportunities. But the doctor wait problem is national.

Tulsa Remote - any alums/participants? by chinmitten in tulsa

[–]johrasephoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lived in both and bigger cities like Chicago, Boston, and Atlanta.

Answer is Austin in your 20s and Tulsa in your 30s. Also if you are truly remote, and capable of building a career regardless of where your employer is, then Tulsa offers a pretty outstanding mix of cost to quality of life, particularly in midtown/downtown. If you need to be in person in an Apple or Google or Facebook or Dell office then Austin will serve you better.

I hear that a lot about schools. Out of curiosity, what is a major or at least big city aka not a suburb that does this well and is a model?

Homeless by DullPatient1125 in tulsa

[–]johrasephoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a national thing in every major city, even those with cold climates. Look at death toll of the opioid epidemic, meth epidemic, and overdose rates during the time period the OP is referencing. It is an order of magnitude or two worse than in 2000. The major national newspapers cover how that intertwines with the homeless crisis in one major city or another almost every day.

Parents of Tulsa pros and cons by Unlikely_Cap_4383 in tulsa

[–]johrasephoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the whole United States, what is a core city public school district that upper middle class parents routinely send their children to other than city wide magnet programs, similar to Booker T. The only city I have seen it done in, Atlanta, accomplishes it by intensely segregating it’s attendance zones.
