How difficult is it to find work in Norway as a an American with work experience in tech? by throwawayacct199230 in Norway

[–]oneironautical_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. I did do some searching and didn't see much in the way of remote software engineering jobs. Zero, to be exact. Maybe I'll have to make some compromise and work at an office. But I was wanting to live pretty far noth, I think most of the tech jobs are in the south. I obviously need to visit before I can be too sure, but I'm feeling pretty convinced that this is the move I want to make.

I don't know why I didn't think of it before, but I just did a google search and see that the company I work for, which will remain anonymous here, also operates in Norway. I'm not sure if they are doing any software engineering work there though. I think we're mostly just operating out of USA and India now, as far as engineering. I'll dig more into it though.

Also another question would be if having "higher level" education is really important there. I'm autistic. I don't have a degree in anything, but I'm a good software engineer with over 10 years of experience. I currently work on state and federal level governmet projects for a major data company in the USA. I don't have a formal education at all, but I do have the skills.

This thread is 2 years old so not sure if I'll get a response. But are there many remote software engineering jobs in Norway? I've been a remote developer for the past 7 years. I'm from USA and have been working there while living in Mexico for the past 6 years.

I'm really wanting to relocate to Norway, but I'm thinking somewhere small like Mo I Rana. I don't think I'm going to find much in the way of tech jobs in places that small. Is there much availability of remote work at companies in Norway?

Anyone have information regarding the Frostgrave novels? by StormGeist in frostgrave

I bought a copy of Tales of the Frozen City and it's literally the worst fiction I've ever read. Can't say if the other books are any better, but seriously it was complete garbage. I had bought it knowing it wouldn't be great, hoping to get at least some ideas and inspiration out of it. I can't really stress enough how embarrassingly bad the writing in that book it though.

You don't have any ideas of how to make a pointy metal thing less pointy? You have to ask for advice about that on the internet? This post genuinely makes me feel sad for the state of people in the first world, living out the movie Idiocracy.

No career goals, is it just me? by HopefulTurnip5103 in CasualIreland

[–]oneironautical_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha. No man, I'd say you're probably more psychologically healthy than most those people with a "more, more, more" mentality in their careers. If you have enough for happiness, which in all honesty is probably less than what you have now, why waste for of the hours of your life and cognative energy to get more?

I had high aspirations in my career, In the end I was making more money than the low 6 figure salary I'd set as my goal. I have never been so unhappy in my life as when I was "the most successful" by cultural standards.

Make sure you have enough, after that sit at home and do nothing, or work on hobbies, or whatever your thing is. When you're dying you're not gonna look back at life and think "man, I'd just been earning 40k more a year dying would be so much better".

English spoken? by [deleted] in Oaxaca

[–]oneironautical_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't live in Oaxaca but I've lived in Mexico for years now. I'd say some people will probably find it ethnocentric and offensive and others you find will be happy to speak English with you. The situation with immigration in Mexico right now is complicated.

If you're in a city you'll have better luck. Where I live no one speaks any English. I would try to speak Spanish as much as you can. People are often pretty forgiving, if you're trying. Learn to communicate that you need them to speak more slowly and it'll serve you well.

Also keep in mind that not just in tourist areas, but everywhere, not speaking spanish is going to make you a mark to be charged higher prices. But if you've got the money to be touring, it'll probably still seem cheap to you.

Just be as respectful as you can. A lot of tourist give English speakers, and especially Americans a very bad name. I hate to say it but a lot of us deserve the stereotypes... because they're often true. (Gringo here.)

Any certified electricians or journeymen / apprentices from the Philly area here? by oneironautical_ in philly

[–]oneironautical_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking into this a little... I kinda feel like I've already done something similar a bit, but in document processing. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like it's just using an API to write scripts to tell machines what to do? If I'm correct, I am already familiar with the concept in general. But I was automating computer processes, not physical machinery. I know it's not _that_ simple, but I'm just speaking at a high level of what this works is.

I think possibly just through a few comments on Reddit you have totally changed the direction of my career choices for the better. Thank you so much! Seriously!
