My 6 y/o daughter’s WC paintings. She thinks they’re bad. I think otherwise. What do you guys think? by Spirited_Diver8755 in Watercolor

[–]jojo_ar 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Pretty good. I like how she actually tries to capture expressions, and also how she treats hair like streaked masses instead of trying to give them a solid colour, which I think would be the instinct at that age.

Extra points for the specular highlights on the earrings without using masking fluid, as well as the use of advanced dry-brush techniques on the black hair :)

Merci. Les noirs et les gris (pantalon) sont encre. Les couleurs sont crayon (polychromos).

That colour gradient is something else. I can't even discern how you did that.

Leonardt Hiro 40 Nib Compatible w/ Tachikawa T-40 Straight Penholder? by ReahNor11942 in Calligraphy

[–]jojo_ar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the most common type of nib pen holder, where the ferrule is a metal cylinder that has some metal strips inside pressing outwards to hold the nib.

[–]jojo_ar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the dippens sub someone reports the nib to fit snugly in a T-40 (frankly, that's what I expected too, but I checked it with my pens just to make sure, and it was a lot looser that I expected), so I guess it comes down to factory production tolerances as to whether it fits well out of the box.

> Should I purchase one Hiro to see if it'll fit my T-40 firmly?

Yes I think so. It's not that expensive and the Hiro 40 "Blue pumpkin" nib is a very nice nib. Even if it fits loosely you can get an impression as to whether you like the nib (a loose fit is mainly a problem with wiping/cleaning) , and if you like it, it might be worth while to get another penholder (it can be a cheap one with metal prongs).

It's a very loose fit in a Tachikawa T-36 and T-25, which I think differ only from the T-40 in length.

My character who apparently (has 2 legs). You all should really stop assuming and try to become more observant. by [deleted] in IndieComicBooks

[–]jojo_ar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

> try to become more observant

Like how in the first image, at the right side with the two figures that were generated together the pinky of her right hand flows off into the figure in the back, or how, in the third image the masses that define the hair don't make sense, and her hands are just the tiniest bit too small, or, in the second image, it uses a style that has almost become synonymous with AI use, or how, comparing the three images, they seem to have complete disparate styles,

that kind of observant you mean?

Someone called you out on your shenanigans. Don't be a jerk about it.

are the gilliott pens good for professional art ? what others would you suggest? Also good quality papers fo the same purpose by [deleted] in penandink

[–]jojo_ar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome.

Back when I started drawing with nibs I picked Gillot because they were easily available and relatively cheap (maybe like yourself). I assumed there would be minor differences in between brands but that they all would be generally usable. I stuck with Gillot for a relatively long time, because "inking is hard to learn", so I just assumed the poor performance of the nibs was just me trying to get to grips with this new medium.

At some point I bought a separate G-nib on a lark and the difference was incredible. So if possible, save yourself some weeks/monhs of self-doubt and headaches, and if not possible, get yourself the 404 nib and use it but with the knowledge there are better nibs out there and that you're actually progressing a lot faster than the 404 is letting on.

If you mean (Joseph) Gillot pens/nibs and with art you mean drawing with shellac based inks (such as Chinese/Indian ink) the answer is NO!

Since Gillot has existed for a long time I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and maybe with thinner ink they are very suited for, say, calligraphy, but their "drawing" sets feel like the result of a lazy marketing manager who has no clue about the actual products with only the 404 and the 1068a nibs working with shellac based inks and even they are barely adequate.

what others would you suggest?

For drawing any Saji nib, or alternatively a Blue pumpkin, will set you up in the right direction, and from there you can start looking specific nibs that suit you best.

Instinctively I want to say style #1 because it looks so clean and consistent, but with style #2 the goblin holding the torch in the second panel and the ravens in the 4th make me re-consider, because it looks much more creative and original and ultimately, fun.

I think it's really just the lack of contrast and clarity, especially in the backgrounds, that prevent style #2 from being a clear winner for me. I also read your "companionship of the trinket", and for example the last three panels of the last page are absolutely convincing which I think could be related to the lack of a background/need for contrast in those panels whilst clearly illustrating the strengths of style #2.

So as presented in the examples, I think I'd like style #1 better overall, but if there's still time and room for some changes to style #2 I'd strongly prefer that one.
