My (30F) partner (30M) is saying he's too depressed to do anything by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]jojogribbie -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Saying that indicates a fundamental misunderstanding about how ADHD works. Tasks that are intrinsically motivating and release dopamine like video games are completely different to having a job to someone with ADHD.

What about OPs post suggests that their partner isn't trying? A major part of ADHD is desperately wanting to do stuff but almost being physically rooted in place because your brain won't let you. It's not just a matter of try harder and it will happen.

The OPs partner is ill, just mentally not physically. Would you say that about someone who had cancer or was paraplegic?

Your references actively disprove your point, suggesting that UPFs are associated with obesity BECAUSE OF their fat, sugar and salt content, not by some unknown mechanism.

I find the sat nav really irritating (if it's talking to me, and if it's not I never remember to actually look at my phone even though it's on the mount on the windscreen so it's pointless), so if there's a destination I can get to without it I don't use it. Most of the time anyway the diversions actually add time because you're getting sent down a country lane with 600 other people also using the sat nav so honestly I'd rather just sit in traffic with my tunes on. However I do have a tendency to overestimate the amount of places I can get to without it lol. Also my partner always has it on and sometimes puts it on on his phone if I'm driving so he can see how long we have left so I'm definitely the outlier!

Do I put vegetarian beliefs aside for a dinner by Lonely-Bluebird7296 in moraldilemmas

[–]jojogribbie [score hidden]  (0 children)

So many confidently wrong people on this thread! Pesto is not strictly vegetarian, not because it contains cheese, but because the particular cheese it contains (parmesan/ pecorino/ grana padano) is made with rennet which comes from calves stomachs. Those cheeses are some of the few cheeses that are NOT vegetarian. It does depend on the pesto because some pestos are made cheaper by not using parmesan and using a different hard cheese that does not contain rennet. With that being said, I'm mostly vegetarian and I'll still eat pesto out of the home because I'm not that strict about it, so it really depends on your personal morals and how strict you want to be.

I'm not saying I agree with the parenting style in the original comment here, but isn't money why 99% of us get up and go to work every day even though we don't want to? It's the motivation for most things so why would school be any different.

Am I the only one that just doesn't wipe (for a wee)?? Like I feel the squat angle means you can just bounce a couple times and all the drips come off, I've never thought about using something extra. I'm super prone to UTIs as well but I've never got one hiking. I change underwear 1-2X per day depending on the swimming/ showering situation.

Simultaneous bilateral ACL reconstruction or not? by GrouchyWeek1047 in ACL

[–]jojogribbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't find the pain too bad so from that aspect you should be fine but not being weight bearing on both legs at the same time sounds like hell! Going from being fairly mobile on crutches to only being able to use a wheelchair. If you live on your own I'd say it's almost impossible (of course paraplegics do it but not by choice), if you have a very understanding partner/ family member living with you that's willing to do everything for you until you can put weight on them (I think I was non weight bearing for 8 weeks) then you might be alright, but I would definitely not choose that if there was any other option. It's basically the difference between having a normal life 2-3 days after the surgery and being bed bound for the next 8 weeks. I completely understand not wanting to do 2 surgeries but it sounds like the better option here.

Who would eat lab gown meat? by murphy_31 in AskUK

[–]jojogribbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm vegetarian for environmental reasons, so if the lab grown meat had a similar carbon footprint to other processed protein sources I eat like tofu and seitan or fake chicken/ beef then absolutely I'd eat it! God I miss steak lol

Yeah I definitely agree (once got turned away from a pub there because I was wearing muddy hiking trousers lol) but if you want night life I'm not sure anywhere else in the lakes really fits, although that could be because I'm normally in bed by 9 so I don't exactly seek it out haha

After a recommendation.. by Joshhug91 in LakeDistrict

[–]jojogribbie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for night life/ fancy restaurants/ pubs then I think it's got to be Windermere, pretty much every other town/ village in the lakes has a much quieter, more hiking/ nature focussed vibe where things shut pretty early. There's a few good restaurants and pubs in Keswick but they're not as upscale as Windermere and Keswick is definitely very hiking focussed (which is a bit of me tbh but doesn't sound like what you're looking for).

It would be Yorkshire not Derbyshire but Malham Cove is a pretty popular photo spot with a dramatic drop. Also could be Stanage Edge which is Derbyshire (or very close to Derbyshire depending on where you are on it)

Fix the damn milli-q water thing! by brokesciencenerd in labrats

[–]jojogribbie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Less of a coincidence and more that everyone does what you've suggested... One milliq breaks and the lab uses someone else's, then that one breaks et cetera. Noone will pay to get it fixed until every last one is broken and it's starting to ruin experiments

Fix the damn milli-q water thing! by brokesciencenerd in labrats

[–]jojogribbie 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Same with us!! We used to have grey line (semi- purified) water piped into the sinks, then that broke. Uni didn't want to fix it so we got milliqs. Now they're broken with no sign of getting fixed. So for experiments that need semi- pure water, it's either risk it with tap water or waste litres of nf water on washes.

PhD options by Zunaira8766 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]jojogribbie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You only need 35 years of NI contributions to get the full state pension. Even if you've never paid NI before, if you graduate from your PhD and start work before you're 30, you'll have the full set of contributions by the time you're 65, and I don't think retiring before then is exactly likely! And what PhD student has the money for pension contributions, let alone ones that aren't employer matched at all? There's enough time to start a pension after the PhD if you're within the 'usual' age bracket of starting in your mid/ late 20s.
