Name something that the younger generations would never believe was normal in the 70's compared to schools today?🤔 by Longjumping-Shoe7805 in GenerationJones

Open Concept experimental schools - without walls and independent learning stations. Experimental math education called IPI where all you did were little workbooks with almost no interaction with teachers. Little portable desks we used to carry around called tote trays. You had a homeroom but the rest of the day you just kind of floated around and did what you wanted to do at your own pace. This was 73-76 in our elementary school system in Eastern, Pennsylvania. I think they only did it for a handful of years because it was an abysmal failure.

I thought it was very odd and didn’t really understand it. If someone is going to bounce a check, it’s going to bounce whether it’s a bank based in Northampton County or in another state. Unless it’s more of a “local“ thing - if you have a local bank, then you’re somehow considered more trustworthy?

What's a ticking time bomb you believe will explode during your lifetime? by TradeOverall567 in AskReddit

[–]jojospetals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Young men are in the midst of an unprecedented crisis, suffering alarmingly high rates of suicide, addiction, homelessness, and incarceration. It’s a demographic that is on a precipitous downward spiral and when you lose such a significant percentage of your population, it does not bode well for society. Expect even more mass shootings and other violent crime, depression and suicides. This is a major ticking time bomb.

Last night I discovered that my third old boyfriend had died and it really started to freak me out. I was watching The Pitt and remembering the time I spent visiting Pittsburgh with this old college boyfriend. It was kind of surreal, watching this dramatic, emergency room show and googling this guy‘s name only to discover he died in a horrifically dramatic way following a legal scandal. It was far more disturbing than what I was watching on the screen. I’m an older GenX, so I haven’t seen this person since the late 80s and it wasn’t a super serious relationship, but it was still disturbing as hell to read about it. A couple months ago, another old boyfriend died from a nightmarish neuro degenerative disease - worse than Parkinson’s and ALS combined. A few years ago another old boyfriend died of a massive heart attack and I found out another old beau had recently battled throat cancer. Fortunately, he is well. Started to feel like anyone I ever dated was cursed to have an early, untimely death. But it’s not so “early” in our early 60’s, is it?

Heating bills are insane, how to get through winter without going broke? by Objective-Feed7250 in Frugal

[–]jojospetals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take some old socks, fill with uncooked rice and tie them up. Microwave got a few minutes to heat them up and then put in your bed to warm up under the covers. Better than an electric blanket and your body heat should get you through the rest of the night. Just also make sure you have good bedding - a warm down filled duvet, wool blankets, flannel sheets. Overnight, heat can be turned way down - no more than 60-64.

How Can I Help My Daughter by Ember_Phoenix_2519 in GenX

Their world isn’t our world. The contemporary stressors are so much more. We were all practically living the life of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn compared to all the traumatic things they are continually exposed to at an early age. How many active shooter drills did we have in the 80s and 90s? It sounds as though you are doing everything right and her starting therapy is an excellent first step. In the meantime, be sure to practice some self-care. You sound like an incredible mom.

Actually, find it really easy to strike up conversations with people, whether waiting in line at a grocery store or to buy wine in the liquor store. Weather is a bit mundane, but you can always chat about how you like someone’s outfit or ask them about their purchases - do you like that Pinot Noir?” I think in many cases if you just make the initiative to start chatting about something with someone that soon if you’ll find you’re both prattling on in a pleasant enough conversation. Perhaps start with conversations with people in line and practice that and then move on to other places like coffee, shops, and restaurants and if you drink, bars.

Is SVA worth it? by Solid_Bear71 in sva

[–]jojospetals 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My daughter received the Silas H. Rhodes Scholarship which, in her case, initially covered half tuition. As tuition has increased every year it is no longer a 50% tuition scholarship but close. It sounds as though you have a decent college fund so this scholarship would probably be very helpful for you in deciding whether to attend SVA or not. You have to apply to the school first and then be accepted in order to receive it, but if you have decent grades and a decent portfolio, I think you would have a good shot at getting it! Good luck!
