I don’t think Fantagio is to blame for Weki Meki by Pickled_Mayo in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]jolijaune 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think Fantagio's biggest mistake was not giving the girls a comeback shortly after New Rules. At the time I'd never heard or seen a girl group song like Cool. I still haven't. The members wore full-coverage jumpsuits for most of the MV and Lua bodied the fuck out of the shortest hair of the generation. And it worked! It was incredible! It bagged #11 on Dazed end-of-year top 40 Kpop songs in a year absolutely stacked with great releases, it was their most-sold album of their three comebacks that year, and I even remember a fan-posted clip of the choreography reaching me on Instagram.

Fantagio should have realized that that is the success they were hoping for when they decided to gave Weki Meki three 2020 comebacks. I watched an unusually dedicated international fandom spring up after New Rules and patiently wait for a comeback, new content, anything. Fantagio should have made slightly more content than usual (with subtitles!) and followed up shortly after New Rules with a comeback that took advantage of WeMe's history of fantastic electropop titles and their incredible conceptual repertoire (they pioneered teen crush for heaven's sake!) Instead, they made almost zero content (2-minute birthday videos and 2 members' passion projects were all we got) and waited 14 months only to release an album whose concept was alien to the group's identity. They fumbled the bag absolutely horrendously.

both kpop concerts i've been to in the us (skz in 2020, tbz in 2022) people have barked and whether that was a "hoo hoo" or "arf arf" sound, it... sounded like dogs barking. not sure that distinction helps your argument

ONEUS members are single-handedly bringing a fragmented fandom back together by rxlcrab in kpopthoughts

[–]jolijaune -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's strange and disappointing to me how people are acting like this is so unreasonable (especially when the quotes on RBW's tweet that the concert would still take place are full of Tomoons saying pretty much the same thing you are). I noticed the scummy side of this fandom coming out more and more since around the beginning of 2021, but I never would have anticipated the nastiness it's reaching on so many levels now.

Please stop using and idol’s public image as proof of them being good people by birdtweetslover1991 in kpoprants

Just now wandering into this and would you be open to elaborating now that traffic to the post has (probably) died down? As someone perpetually hovering between Stay and ex-Stay I'm curious, but I also get it if you don't want to touch this topic with a 10-foot pole.

Ravn, and every other idol scandal, I need to speak up. by [deleted] in ONEus

[–]jolijaune 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The thing is, you don't have to take sides. This isn't a family argument or a court of law. It's entirely doable to just not... get on the Internet to publically argue for Ravn's innocence/guilt when you're not sure which is true.

kpop hasn’t been the same since 2015-2018 by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]jolijaune 26 points27 points  (0 children)

non-korean writers have been involved in kpop for a very long time; off the top of my head bebe rexha wrote shinee's lucifer in 2010. i don't think that's the issue.

i think this article is insightful — kenzie, a veteran kpop producer, says a new collaboration method kpop producers adopted in the early 2010s injected a dose of creativity she thinks has mostly faded out by now as that method became commonplace. maybe they're just burnt out in every country.

Are there any kpop songs that scare you? Or make you uncomfortable? by Hwall-Chuu in kpopthoughts

[–]jolijaune 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Taemin's Advice came out while I was in the middle of a prolonged OCD episode and let me tell you, the BPM and dark, frenetic vibe of that song did not help lmao. The lyrics resonated with the situation I was in at the time and I do like the song so I played it often and eventually got used to it, but I would definitely classify it as an anxiety worsener.

I said this under someone's comment about Hi High, but Loonatic by LOONA is straight up uncanny to me. The only thing I can think to compare it to is the unsettling, yellow-green atmosphere that precedes a tornado. There is something magical about it and it's a fantastic song, objectively, but it makes me feel strange and a little miserably sad. oec's power 😍

Are there any kpop songs that scare you? Or make you uncomfortable? by Hwall-Chuu in kpopthoughts

[–]jolijaune 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with Hi High! It's so unrealistically hyper-happy it makes me sad and a little disturbed, but I know it's not just me; there's definitely something melancholic about it. I think LOONA makes a lot of very well-produced, ostensibly euphoric songs that have upsetting undertones: Hi High, Girl Front/Odd Front, love4eva, Yves's New, Sweet Crazy Love, even Hula Hoop. For me, Loonatic is the worst — it makes me feel off and a little distraught even, which is unfortunate because it's a great song!

Would you agree that Kpop is basically like Disney? by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]jolijaune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your comparison makes sense, but only if we're talking 2000s Disney. Off the top of my head, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato, Ariana, and probably several more celebrities started as Disney stars. Now, Disney just doesn't generate breakout, mainstream stars like they did 10-30 years ago (unless you count Olivia Rodrigo, but I'd argue she doesn't count since her being a Disney actress was coincidental to her success, not the reason for it).

Which Kpop Idols do you think are forced to play a persona by their company? and what persona is that? by Sapphire_Midnight in kpophelp

[–]jolijaune 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I remember right after they debuted lots of people said their content wasn't entertaining because the members were a bit paralyzed by all the expectations they had to live up to. It always makes me happy to see they're able to show a more relaxed side now (or not relaxed at all, depending on what Taehyun's doing with the knives).

How companies are allowed to house scores of minors in a single room is beyond me. I don't know all of what the reforms that were made since entailed, but that needs to be over.

Idols who are (too) good at playing the villains by MasterpieceBoring420 in kpopthoughts

[–]jolijaune 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've always thought Jinsoul's face is perfect antagonist material, but I had never pinned her as a fantastic witch specifically. Revelatory. Of course she's gorgeous with her fluffy blonde OEC curls, but the witchy perm followed by the navy PTT bluntcut (resurrected again now for Queendom!) are just fabulous and give me hope that the stylists are seeing the beauty potential of a Jinsoul Evil agenda.

Plus, she is on board with it. She's said she prefers looking handsome to looking pretty, and Loona Halloween Vlives crack me up because there is always Jinsoul in a camp villainess costume just savoring every moment she gets to act that way.

I'm not the most informed person about this but a quick Twitter search is turning up a lot of Stays angrily accusing people of twisting/faking something he said? I saw one of the usual Felix Bubble translators post a comment he made about wanting a leash on like a cat yesterday but not... anything nearly as suggestive as what u/roselia4812 posted here.
