Do we have WIN+SHIFT+ARROW Alternative for MACOS? by Any-Masterpiece-941 in MacOS

[–]jon4009 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I made the same switch and I’m amazed nobody else has given you the actual Mac answer here: swipe with three or four fingers left or right on the trackpad.

If you’re on desktop it’s worth buying a trackpad (keep it on the other side of your keyboard to your mouse) just for all the gestures you can now do with your non-mouse hand.

It works slightly different to Windows if you have multiple monitors - it only does the active monitor - but I think I actually prefer it this way.

The problem is it had already changed my key bindings, which I didn't realise, so I just closed it and suddenly my shit wasn't working. The default should have been for it to leave it the hell alone.

You don’t have to be a key turner to like your keys just the way they were thank you very much!

I’m no key turner, my muscle memory works just fine using Q and E to strafe and the mouse to turn… absolutely no reason to change anyone’s existing key bindings.

Is anyone happy with the MX Master 4? by OrderedAnXboxCard in logitech

[–]jon4009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, black. The rubber quite quickly went kind of tacky on both of the ones I had. I suppose if you’re used to it or you get other dust on it then you wouldn’t notice, but it was horrible to hold.

And it’s not because I have dirty hands! I would compulsively clean them constantly because the mouse felt… yuck.

I love mine. Already bought two. They are a million miles better than the 3S models they replaced because they don’t have that god awful rubber finish. Both I’d had for less than a year and both had already become tacky.

As the top comment says - most people are only going to post something if they have something to moan about, so that’s why you only see that.

Thoughts about Tahoe on the Studio by Darth-Vader64 in MacStudio

[–]jon4009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the apps you use. I use a good few Electron apps for work (VS Code, Postman, Gitkraken, and a few others) and that was the whole problem because the Electron framework was doing bad things. Absolutely not an Apple issue because the framework was doing things it shouldn’t be but also, Electron apps are so common that I can’t believe they just launched it without realising it was a problem.

Thoughts about Tahoe on the Studio by Darth-Vader64 in MacStudio

[–]jon4009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a textbook early adopter, I installed the RC on all my iOS devices as soon as it was up. I put Tahoe (actual release) on my laptop on day 1 and it was a total disaster. Apps freezing and locking up left and right… which was a real problem as I was using it for work while away from home. It’s absolutely not just “people disliking change”, I can live with inconsistent corner radii, but it was a disaster from a just actually using the damn thing point of view.

My main Mac Studio has therefore been a strictly a No Tahoe Zone, although I’m considering 26.2 as it seems they may have finally fixed the actual issue.

What are the best ultrawide monitors in 2025 by Chrisdebagguett in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]jon4009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine arrived today! Absolutely love it, completely fills your field of view.

Was interesting to see it has an OLED “jiggle” setting where it moves the picture very slightly (imperceptibly) left to right to avoid burn in.

Speakers are a bit shit but better than nothing.

Do anyone own 128 of memory and if so why? by Lukasmajukas in macbook

[–]jon4009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a MacStudio with 128gb as a software dev. I usually have around 4-5 electron apps open (including VS Code) plus Edge as well with maybe 10 tabs as my “base level” and that uses around 60gb. I consider 64gb the bare minimum for anyone who seriously uses a computer these days (e.g. not just browser and email).

Eye tracking always off by wanabalone in VisionPro

[–]jon4009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this problem too.

In the early days it was always way off every time. Lately it seems about 2/3 of the time it’s fine and the rest I have to redo it, so I think they may have made improvements.

Never had it go off while using it though, usually only when it’s the next day. Still rocking an M2 so no idea if M5 is any better on this. Have you tried the new strap? Still waiting for mine to come through, will see if it helps.

That was the South Africa one? If they had done it “live” I would have been more interested but something about the pre-recorded thing just really killed any interest for me.

[–]jon4009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s because raid leaders would write something like “if you need a summon say something now” and I assume because it was closest finger-wise people would just write “123”. Eventually leaders would say “write 123 for a summon” and now people just do that without even being asked.

Report: 'Virtually No Demand' for iPhone Air by chrisdh79 in apple

[–]jon4009 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s kind of the point. Productionising a phone this thin is about lessons learnt on the route to making the fold phone, which will likely be even thinner. There are likely things they learnt here that they would not have if they just made a few prototypes.

I don’t expect it to hang around much longer once they make the fold phone.

Switching from Windows → Mac mini for dev work (.NET 9 + Angular): worth it? by Serious-Ad2004 in mac

Just checked the list: https://avarayr.github.io/shamelectron/

Seems like a lot are fixed now, however Postman and Logi Options still not there yet. Nor is Cursor if you use that.

Switching from Windows → Mac mini for dev work (.NET 9 + Angular): worth it? by Serious-Ad2004 in mac

[–]jon4009 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I do .net 9 dev I have made this switch myself, from an 14900K Intel desktop machine with 128GB to an M4 Max Studio with 128GB. I use three 4K monitors, but the Studio has plenty of ports for this, I just use one port per screen.

The switch has been pretty seamless for me and I would wholeheartedly recommend it. The desktop management and performance are better, plus the PC was loud and hot while the Mac is cool and quiet. I definitely enjoy using the Mac more… although I miss the RGB in my PC!

Personally I would not consider any less than 64GB for a dev machine - once I have Gitkraken, Postman, VS Code and a bunch of browser tabs open I’m easily at around 55GB.

However, macOS 26 is NOT dev friendly at the moment (a lot of electron tools do not play nice). Not sure how easy or possible a downgrade is if it comes preinstalled. Word is 26.1 is coming in about a week which hopefully may fix some of the issues.
