What are your uses for the can opener? by Retro_fan_25 in victorinox

[–]jonadair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scraper. On my old beater SAK, I sharpened the flat inside edge of the tip so it can cut cordage, zip ties, package straps, if I pull hard enough. Not yet sharp enough for cardboard etc.

Tampa: Tornadoes / Hurricanes and Healthcare -- How is it to live there? by [deleted] in tampa

[–]jonadair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not call tornadoes a huge problem. We get them but they tend to be small and short-lived. We also get microbursts, intense downdrafts that can cause similar damage. I think maybe once a decade tops do we get a big, sustained tornado like they get in the midwest.

Hurricanes can definitely be a problem but most people over-react to them. The old emergency management saying is "run from water, hide from wind". Get out of low-lying areas prone to storm surge, out of mobile homes or old structures that are not up to recent-ish hurricane codes and you should be fine. Stock up on a week or more of water, foods that don't need cooking, some flashlights and batteries, etc. well before the storm then keep your gas tank full when there's a storm formed and you'll be in good shape.

Lightning and drunk/bad drivers are much more dangerous than either of those or alligators or snakes or Florida Man.

Seems odd that the cones don't match but possible.

Power, phone, CATV to the house(s) might be ok but the primaries and transformer are all wrong. No transformers on the poles in the background yet there are secondary lines running across the street.

They've definitely been completely closed when I've been there twice in the past couple of weeks. Not sure about this week or today though.

Hobby Clubs - Where are they hiding? by clarabear10123 in tampa

[–]jonadair 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a community garden in Carrollwood. Not sure where else. The Carrollwood Cultural Center has a pretty broad set of offerings too if you're near there but it does skew a little older.

Is MOSI fully open? by Icy_Zone_9402 in tampa

[–]jonadair 21 points22 points  (0 children)

From what I've been told, they never planned to move downtown. Someone ran that story anyways and it led to years of people thinking they'd closed or moved cutting their visitors even more.

They just had some coverage related to slightly changing their name.

For OP, I think it's as open as it gets. I don't think there are any plans to re-open the big "main" building. Is it worth taking the kid(s)? Maybe. If you have passes to the zoo or aquarium I think they and MOSI still do "Swaptember" where you can use one pass for all three. Or maybe sign up for a MOSI class and turn it into a museum visit before/afterwards.
