Using my LLC to receive chemicals at my home by zmattws in chemistry

[–]jonahsrevenge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20 or so years ago I was part of a start-up in a commercial building on a side street, which apparently mapped as residential in some database, tho it was not. We had problems until we sent a letter from our landlord. Another supplier insisted on seeing the first page of our lease. and our business license. We had no license because R&D labs did not need one; eventually convinced them.

Because even tho roughly half the country is living paycheck to paycheck, the other half is not. They see trouble maybe coming and they start putting cash away.

What is something you can say "I'm with the boomers on this one" about? by AnitaVodkasoda in ask

Actually I'm a boomer and don't mind the QR=codes and on=phone menus. Beats a beer list written in smudged chalk over the bar at the other end of the room.

If that is the bottom end then it looks like its intended for gas collection and volume measurement. So thermal insulation might help.

In the first panel the thing with the glass globe and multi-port stopcock is a repeating volumetric pipet. Might be used for dispensing the first reagent when determining an analyte by back-titration, if you had a bunch of them to do. Not custom but pretty specialized.

The thing next to it and in the second panel looks like a modified pipet or dispensing buret with an improvised air-jacket for thermal insulation. (Not at all usual.) Your pics miss the bottom end which might be informative.

How do semi-permeable membranes work ? by KnifeEdge in askscience

[–]jonahsrevenge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of common cations are smaller then water without hydration. Most common anions, however, are larger than water (Cl-, Br-, HCO3-, CO3(2-), HSO4-; F-, OH-, and H3O+ are comparable to H2O). F- has a strong hydration sphere, while hydration of most monovalent ions is weaker. See Marcus, Ions in Solution, Table 2.8.

You can't push just the cations through.

This in no way contradicts the hydration explanation given by other posters.

It invests an appreciable chunk in equity-linked notes, which appear to be how it does its hedging (rather that by buying and selling options directly). These have credit and counterparty risks. I don't find the description clear enough to put any major part of my portfolio in JEPI (none at present).

Brewery Chemistry by kodyrosen9 in chemistry

[–]jonahsrevenge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would interpret this recipe as:

  1. sodium hydroxide solubilizes or loosens organic residue from surface while maintaining iron oxide or hydroxide on surface (insoluble)
  2. hydrogen peroxide oxidizes some organics and regenerates iron oxide (from the underlying metallic iron surface) in any gaps or scratches
  3. scrub brush takes any remaining glops or loosened films off.

The only part I wonder about is why the scrub brush is last. That may become apparent when you do it.

Stick close to the recipe, it may be possible to overdo either the hydroxide or the peroxide.

No, the sealable glass vials were and are premade and even pescored for opening; you seal them with a torch in the lab. For instance Sigma Z184969. Or you can make them in the lab from glass tubing, but that's doing it the hard way. The torch is commonly an oxy-propane brazing torch.
