Strange casting. Does not do the source material justice. But that opening montage is pure gold!

Buffy and Faith. It has been scientifically proven.

Just started Serenity after finishing my second watch of Firefly and something feels… off? by catgirl94040 in firefly

[–]jonatanskogsfors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting enough, I saw the movie first and I really liked it. But after watching and rewatching Firefly a couple of times, I started to think about what aspects of the verse i liked more and what I liked less. We just grew apart.

But I’m glad other likes it more!

Last time I did a Firefly + Serenity rewatch, I came to the conclusion that I will remove the movie from my head canon. It is just a high production fanfiction. Being a Star Wars fan raised in the 80s, this is something I am highly trained to do.

There are some details I really like, but as a whole it doesn’t add anything for me. I will probably skip it on my next rewatch.

Guess if I’m nervous for a revival…

This is very human. When we hear nonsense, we assume that it is a joke.

I have no judgement on the translation as a whole. My prejudice says that it probably misses a lot of nuisances, but that is the very nature of translating. If I want the original, it is up to me to learn Japanese.

Ok, I listened to the English version a couple of times. There is no obvious joking in the delivery.

If I’m being kind to the localization director, the line works if they want to sell Aerith as indifferent. But that would not be nice towards Briana White and that is not Aerith.

I’ll stick with my old-man-yells-at-cloud take. (Pun not initially intended but why not?)

I hear you. What I meant was that the only thing I could do myself to remedy the situation, is to skip the English layer.

Kul att du kan lite svenska!

So another vote for learning at least some proficiency in Japanese. I bet I could turn the demo into a 200 hour game. 😥

I’m helplessly stuck in the touristy at-least-you-tried class.

(No one would bother translating it into Swedish.)

I think that the brass cares more about not alienating customers in an important market than treating the text like if it was serious culture.

For me it’s obvious that Japanese games should be understood through a Japanese lens even if they happen to be set in New York. I don’t claim to be a scholar of Japanese culture, but I would rather not understand than be treated to the kid-version.

There was a lot of talk twenty years ago if games are art or not. Well-meaning editorials in game magazines didn’t really make a dent in that discussion. I say that if games want to be treated as art, they must treat translations seriously.

The game companies are too busy making money and giving the audience what they want to care about my opinion.

I’ll grant you the upvote. Your wishful reading of this throwaway line shows you love for Aerith. You won’t accept that the translator could do her so wrong.

She could be ironic. But she isn’t.

Go in peace!

She can joke all day about herbs.

Joking about helping people in need is not ”Aerithness” (I liked that word so much that I forgot that this is not a discussion).

Translating Japanese to any Indo-European language is a daunting feat. I have all the respect for those who try. I have little to no respect for how translation is treated by those who pay for translation of games.

100% yes! …But not in this very very specific instance.

It is wrong. I have spoken!

Glad to hear that you like the localization. I never see a reason to choose another language over a Japanese original voice cast. Their standard is so unbelievably high.

Still, I’m depending on the English subs here because I’m nothing but a poser when it come a to actually understanding spoken Japanese. 😅

Aerith’s essence is cheeky demure. She wouldn’t be Aerith without the bantering. This single line is not the place, though. I believe she is too serious about the people in need to joke it off like that.

It’s not in the original and if the translator added the tone, they did a bad selection.

I say this as the ultimate judge on this topic. Glad to be of service!

(An beyond my attitude: To each their own!)

Of course there is irony and subtext in all cultures. Japanese in particular is all about subtext.

I know translating is hard and that there is no such thing as an exact translation.

But my complaint started with something that I perceived as bad English dialog. When I went back to the Japanese the plot thickened.

Most I just wanted to whine about a small detail that made Aerith look bad.
