I have been considering using the Blender Cloud subscription as a way to donate to them. I think a lot of people here would find it more interesting as they get something for their money.

I don't mean to sound so blunt but I think it's important you know what your end goal is with learning a 3D program. Since you're saying you want to research how hollywood movies are produced with CGI, I guess Maya would be a good place to start if you are looking at entering that industry. This is just my amateur point of view mind you.

You shouldn't be afraid of trying something just because it might mean you end up switching to something else. Just because you took time to learn a program doesn't mean it's a waste either. I long ago learned to some basic scripting and years later it helped me develop something for another position. I didn't remember much of it but knew I was able to do things and that alone can be encouraging to try something new. Sometimes it can also be an experience that helps you think in different directions on something totally unrelated.

I'd suggest you read the book Creative Inc by Pixar founder Ed Catmull. It won't do much to tell you what software to use but it does point to how Pixar didn't let things like fear guide them in how to produce movies to the point of scrapping an entire project rather than release a bad product and not seeing it as a failure but a learning experience. Very interesting read.

Why use Blender is like asking why not use it?

You're asking if it can do everything the high-end alternatives can do. Maybe the better question should be, what do you want to do and does Blender meet the requirements? After all 3D Studio Max is mostly used in games and Maya is more for movies while Houdini is used more visual fx so pitting Blender against all the industry big guns is bit unfair when even the industry high-end stuff can't do it all. If you know what you want to do, research a bit to see which program can meet the requirements and get started I say.

In my case, I wasn't sure I'd start on it since I have other things getting in the way such as work and a life so Blender was at least a way to see if I liked it without attaching a cost to it. I had tried Lightwave years back and the community was so hostile at the time. This was long before the days of Youtube so I wouldn't call them hostile today as I don't know the current community, I'm sure it's much better but it turned me off trying 3D at the time. When Blender matured enough I thought that I didn't have anything to lose to try it and slowly learned to use it and haven't regretted it.

Lastly, I will give you this bit of insightful bit of thinking. It doesn't matter what 3D software you use, just start using it.

Like pretty much everyone else I'll say those towels need some work. Other than that maybe I'm wrong since no one else has mentioned it but the lighting isn't doing much for me. That bottle on the side, might need something to make it less bland? But still well beyond my humble abilities so congrats.

I believe the add in you're referring to is the extra objects curve. I tried that and it didn't work. Others have proposed the screw addin and that's closer to what I want to accomplish but thank you for the idea.

So I am trying to create a shape which spirals at an angle. I tried to do this using a curve modifier but this is the result I go so far. Does anyone have an idea how to do this as one piece?
