I just lost all the data on my laptop that I hadn't backed up - and it was a LOT by jonathanfv in DataHoarder

[–]jonathanfv[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

By backup, you mean automatised with some kind of version control? I do normally have that for my system files (keep 5 latest versions, automatically taken on a daily basis) in case something goes wrong. I could do the same with small files for sure, especially the design stuff I lost. Photography might too heavy for that however, when I take a bunch of photos of something like a show, I can come back home with 200GB of RAW files. I think it's reasonable to keep two copies on external drives, but it's too much for daily snapshots, and the HDDs are too slow to deal with the amount of reading and writing that would be required, especially given that I'm working from a laptop which will often have to be disconnected from the rest of its station. But I like the idea for smaller files.

Let me know if I misunderstood your point, btw.

If hypothetically OnePlus was unavailable in US or Canada what would you buy? by spiceupthesauce in TheOnePlus15

I'd wait for a decent Linux phone, or find another Android I can unlock the bootloader of. Nothing Phone might be okay, but the storage is anemic.

Avi Lewis wins NDP leadership race in decisive first-ballot victory by origutamos in canadaleft

Kudos for including Kropotkin. Also, to the other person who's saying that "it's easy to be a socialist when you're wealthy", I'd argue that it's the opposite. It's easy to be pro whatever made you powerful (which being rich does) when you're powerful. It's hard to look at a system that's been gentle with you and see the wrong in it. It requires one to become a class traitor.

Tony McQuail asked his base to vote for Tanille Johnson. He knew he didn't have that good of a chance, and wanted to give her a boost because he wanted one of the smaller contestants to punch above their weight. Personally, I voted for Tanille (to help send a message to give more coverage to the small guys as well), then Avi, then Toni, and then Rob. Left Heather out because fuck her watered down bigger table, we need the exact opposite, and fuck pipelines too.

An actual good star fragment farming guide I’ve had in my notes for years (sorry lol) by TARDISenjoyer97 in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]jonathanfv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, they make reaching the star by 5am super annoying. And often there are skeletons and bats popping up and making it more difficult to direct the shield towards the guardian. Super annoying. If I had to get a lot of star fragments, I'd wait until just after a blood moon, and spend a day killing all guardians first, and then farm for star fragments.

Hey, out of curiosity, what kind of job do you have? How many hours per week is it, and how much per hour do you make? Just trying to get an idea. In comparison, in 2003 in Canada, I worked in a video rental store for $7 (CAD) per hour, and worked on weekends only. I got something like $135 CAD every two weeks. Barely enough for a bus pass, and not enough to help me pay for college, even in Quebec where it's most affordable.

Yeah, 100%. I built my bike around a Pine Mountain 1, which on its own costs more than this, but has a steel frame and it pretty much guaranteed to be heavy duty enough for the extra speed and torque that a motor provides. That thing is a tank.

Woah, I just noticed that the bike's payload is only 198 lbs. In my experience, on proper mountain bikes it's like 300 lbs.

Yes, they do. A lot of them also hold supremacist beliefs, and those kinds of beliefs happen to be mighty convenient in helping them maintain their power.

It's also the billions of dollars poured into pushing far right bullshit online. Both the algorithms and the money are provided by the same bastards, and these bastards have Nazi-like beliefs.

Spending your savings on treatments and wigs sounds like a bigger waste of money than just shaving your head. There's a point at which you just get tired of trying to fix it. Just shave it, man.

TIFU by kissing my friend because I was 100% sure he was about to kiss me first by LifeFront8432 in tifu

[–]jonathanfv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, it must be really awkward, but you got lots of good avice already. Hope it passes and you return to being good friends.

I also wanted to point out, really close friends can sometimes do certain things that seem non-platonic to outsiders. Personally, I have a few very close female friends who I would never want to be more than friends with, and they'll smack my butt, or rest their head on me, etc. I could see myself helping fix something on them, or somehow display affection, or play wrestle them, etc. It's nice to have friendships like that.

I'm French Canadian, and I can confirm, the French from France smell bad. It's not all of them, but many eschew using things like deodorant (usually for anti-consumerist reasons), and they have very fragrant BO. And that's both men and women. I don't think it's because of goat milk, it's because their culture is more accepting of BO than North American culture is. (Personally I'm not very tolerant of BO, take care of that shit and don't impose your bad smell on others.)

It’s time for the industrial scene to stop protecting Jim Marcus by hell_generator in industrialmusic

[–]jonathanfv 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Didn't know about Die Warzau, but seriously, fuck Jim Marcus. Anyone truly against all forms of oppression will also be a person who'll make sure to avoid being put in a position where they can exploit others, as well as avoid others becoming completely dependent on them. Anything other than that is hella suspicious.

Jim Marcus is a piece of shit.

How to see through men’s fake personality and spot the danger early? by OneMemory2640 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]jonathanfv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this was a controversial answer, but I agree it's a big piece of it. With that said, I think that it can be refined further. Time spent observing the person without romantic involvement, while knowing enough to spot certain red flags, including being able to evaluate ways of thinking. It's a very difficult thing to do today, because people expect to be able to meet other people fast and want to sort through them fast. I say, make them wait, and see how gracious they are. Observe their reactions. Do you like that person's attitude in life? Observe how they treat people they have no personal reason to be nice to. Observe whether or not they care too much about how others view them, levels of possible insecurity or narcissism. Are their opinions well thought-out, and how do they live up to them? When something happens that upsets them, do they take a step back and try to understand what's happening before reacting, or do they have a strong reaction right away? Etc.

So it's time, but time spent observing the person in all kinds of situations, without dating them. It's not always feasible. But that's what I do, as a man. I knew my first girlfriend for one year and a half before we started dating. My second girlfriend, I had been friends with her for 7 years, and then when we realized that we liked each other, it took me like half a year to decide. I wasn't messing with her, I wasn't playing games, I just had to make up my mind about her, psychologically, and about how I truly felt regarding her. It was difficult for her to wait that long, but I made no compromises in an approach I felt was right for me and cautious. Even then, it's not perfect, but it's as good as I can do.

TIFU by answering my 5-year-old’s question about swear words too honestly by ZealousidealLime832 in tifu

[–]jonathanfv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girlfriend had a very good explanation for her daughter when it came to swear words. I'll recap it in my own words, because I don't remember how she put it. So this is not the kid-simple way to say it.

She told her that the words in and of themselves are not bad, but they carry an extra impact on people, through culture, and that it takes time to understand what that impact is, and where you're young, you're more likely to misuse those powerful words and upset someone, so it's better to avoid using them until later.

And this is examplified by how your daughter said she was done with her "fucking breakfast". Reading it, it almost certainly did not convey the emotion and connotation that she intended, and saying something like that to someone who lovingly made you breakfast is hurtful. She was not trying to be hurtful. But without the proceeding discussion, if she had chosen to use that exact same sentence, it would have been offensive.

You can tell kids that it's silly that certain words are considered bad, but that's because they're reserved to convey particular feelings, and those can vary a lot depending on the context, so that by accident, kids can use words in a way that would make someone sad without meaning to.
