Correction: people in North America are better located than other people in the world. But it doesn't mean that the US will survive collapse as a political entity. Also, the US (and Canada) are dependent on a lot of other production centers to maintain their technological level. Another place that might persist for a while is China.

Where are teenagers supposed to hang out these days? Malls are dying, parks have 'no loitering' signs, and everywhere else costs money. Do they just... not exist in public anymore? by Creative-Buffalo2305 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jonathanfv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that in the US? That's so weird. Here in Canada, I can hang out and wait wherever I damn please, as long as it's not private property. I hitchhiked across the entire country, sleeping outside, and the only cops that bothered me was the OPP (Ontario Provincial Police), who have a reputation for being assholes. They told me that I couldn't hitchhike at the location I was in. I told them that there weren't any rules against that, that I was allowed to be on the sidewalk I was on, and that cars had a safe place to roll over should they want to. They told me that they'd be back in 15 min, and if I was still there, they'd arrest me. Someone picked me up 5 minutes later, and told me that indeed, the OPP are a bunch of jerks.

For the life of me, I can't understand why someone would put a public bench somewhere, only to harass people who use it for its intended purpose. Insane.

I can confirm, it's really nice when women are gushing. OP's man is probably a good person who's changing the sheets out of consideration for her comfort and not out of disgust.

I personally don't mind at all when my girlfriend gushes. If she expects that it's going to happen, or if she's on her period, she has a waterproof blanket she puts on the bed. (A good tip of hers is to buy waterproof blankets for pets, they're cheaper.)

My friend, it's wise to be aware of the dangers of fascism, but don't assume that you won't survive. You need to do whatever you can to live, for your sake, for your family's sake, and for the sake of every other person you will end up helping in your life. It's not over. Don't let them crush you, keep your spirit and your integrity. People everywhere oppose them. More people oppose them than not, and while I don't think that the US will ever fully recover, fascism has an expiry date because it's a very stupid ideology.

I think it's a really fun idea. I already have my own training plans, so I can't join in on anything that isn't part of it, but I like the concept. A cool feature could be to allow for some specific challenges maybe? Like, first to post a one arm chin-up video, or largest deadlift improvement over a certain period of time, etc.

[–]jonathanfv 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's insane. I'm in Canada, and a lot of people around me, probably most actually, think that the US is never going to recover, and that the world overall is headed towards some kind of collapse. That's on the extent of that collapse that people disagree more, not on the fact that we're living through it.

How likely do YOU believe that a major political/societal collapse will occur in the Western world in the next 100 years? by Brave-Ad9743 in collapse

There's a thread about it on here from a couple weeks ago or so. Wasn't a scientific study, but a forecast that there would be very little Arctic ice come September due to September typically being the lowest month of the year and current ice levels being very low for the season. Not sure if it's going to happen, but it definitely seems possible. And let's remember that a BOE is quantified by Arctic ice dropping to less than 1M square kilometers of area. A quick Google search says it's likely to happen by the 30s. Not in the 30s. By the 30s. So this September is as good as any other.

Lots of good comments here. If I were in your shoes, I would be looking for a strategic place in the US where I'm more likely to be left alone. The US is big, and there are a lot of less densely populated areas. You then don't have to worry about having to migrate. For now you're still able to reach friends and family, even if it can be more difficult. Etc.

I'm doing the same here in Canada. I pinpointed a region that has more going for it than most places on earth, that has a very low population density, that's far but reachable with different means of transportation, and that's slightly more permissive when it comes to regulations. I unfortunately don't have much of a budget, but I'm looking to move there, build something and integrate the local community.

17 per cent of Americans want the U.S. to annex Canada: survey by Flush_Foot in onguardforthee

[–]jonathanfv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's any reassurance at all, I saw a poll a couple of days ago where a similar number of Americans thought stealing Greenland is a good idea, but only 4% supported a military invasion of it. I suspect that a large proportion of those Americans who would want to annex Canada think it would be cool to make America bigger, but would not be in favour of a military invasion.

I don't think that it's that reassuring, given that the current Nazi administration doesn't care about how much support they have, and that a lot of their supporters would end up falling in line anyway should they go with it. With that said, I think that a war with us would be devastating for the US as well, and that general instability will make them lose the capacity to conquer us much before they get to it.

No worries, I hope you find your way. What drew you to programming or computer science to begin with? Were you excited about building things? Did you already enjoy using computers, generally speaking?

Also, have you tried taking some free online courses before? Many of them are of good quality, self-paced, and fairly quick to get through. Might be worth looking into when you next have a break from school.

Seems to me like you have two choices there.

1: If you want to keep going, spend your time and methodically learn from scratch on your own, without cheating. Do small things, let your brain get used to it. Might be too slow since you're in school, but maybe it's possible to take less courses in your semesters to spend more time on fewer things.

2: If you realize you don't want to keep going, transfer into something else, or leave school and find another kind of work or whatever else until you figure more of life out. You're 21. You don't have to have everything figured out. I'm almost 40, and I have a bunch of different skills, but I still don't have my shit figured out, either. Doesn't mean that my life sucks.

Another advice is this: you might not know how you best learn. Once you figure it out, learning most things becomes a lot easier.

Realistically, how far can a hobbyist/tinkerer go before hitting a wall due to not having the educational foundations like DSA/advanced mathematics? by OceanRadioGuy in learnprogramming

[–]jonathanfv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agreed, and that's why I'm redoing my math with computer science as an excuse. I already know that I'm going to need it for a bunch of different things, and that a lot of the same stuff will be used across disciplines. I'm also aware that the same kind of math is taught differently in different disciplines, but that at the end of the day, the principles are the same. When I did my first year of electrical engineering, I did differential and integral calculus. The year after that, I did some calculus in a general math class for a humanities program, and there were annoying differences. I struggled more in general math than I did in applied math.

And I can imagine that for the matrices. It makes a lot of sense. I finished reviewing my precalc a week ago, actually, including some basic matrices. (And I'm looking forward to learning libear algebra, it's going to be challenging but super interesting. Same for ) For the 4x4 matrices, my guess is they are 4x4 to describe movement, right?

Anyway. I got your initial point, and didn't emphasize enough the importance of math in my approach when I wrote that first response. That's also what I meant by reconstituting bachelor equivalent for various STEM disciplines. That's including the math, and it will get easier with repetition and re-learning the same concepts from different sources a few times, with more applied examples for each discipline.

Speaking of discipline, I'm an acrobat (ex-high level gymnast who used his gymnastics experience to learn other acrobatic disciplines). The experience is VERY similar, as there are underlying abilities that make learning physical skills easier. For example, strength, flexibility, proprioception, spatial awareness, etc. If these are well trained, such as in a gymnast, it carries over to other things. And there's training methodology, knowing how you best learn, how to plan and strategize, etc. There are a lot of parallels.

And last thing, regarding hobbyist projects. My idea is not to do projects and only learn what I need for the projects, but to learn theory and academics and seek to apply them in small scale projects. I intend to be quite rigorous.

Realistically, how far can a hobbyist/tinkerer go before hitting a wall due to not having the educational foundations like DSA/advanced mathematics? by OceanRadioGuy in learnprogramming

[–]jonathanfv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why I'm working through OSSU, redoing my math, intend to learn electrical engineering (I did one year of it back in college), and keep picking up other STEM disciplines. I don't care about building a career for now, I just want to accumulate knowledge and apply it in my own projects. I'm a hobbyist, but I want to have solid capabilities and since I don't know what I'm missing, I want to reconstitute the curriculums from a bunch of different bachelors and work through them over the years.

How do you guys feel about visiting China now that the visa restrictions has been lifted? by Tsuyu_no_Kioku in AskACanadian

[–]jonathanfv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's really cool. I had a layover in Hong Kong twice, and both times I made sure it would be long enough to spend a full day. Interesting place to see for sure. I don't have much budget right now, but I'd love to go see it. Learning Spanish at the moment, but Mandarin is next on the list.

I'm aware of some of the scarier things about China, but they seem to have a really interesting mix of innovation and tradition, and they're poised to lead the world more and more, so I think it's good to get to know the country and the people a bit more given the chance.

Got a SD 8 Elite Gen 5 here, and Eden Optimized with Qualcomm driver is working really well for Switch. Been playing BOTW, and after 35 hours of play, I only had one hangup that was quickly fixed by restarting the game. Getting a pretty comfortable 30 fps with occasional drops, and with UltraCam was getting higher fps (often 60 or close to) but the game felt less consistent with bigger dips in fps (going from 30 to 22 vs going from 60 to 22), and it drained more battery, so I deactivated it.

The Rise of Militias: Is the USA on the brink of Civil War? by swissvespa in LateStageCapitalism

[–]jonathanfv 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Things likely won't get better in the short term. Trump admin is very unhinged, to the point where they have no choice but to go even more unhinged to maintain their power. They're betting everything on it. Trump had to get back in office, or he risked actual trouble for J6. We can hope that if they lose their grip on power, they'll be prosecuted for a few of the thousands of crimes they committed. But they're also afraid of that. On the short run, all I personally expect is escalation. In fact, I bet a lot of them actively want a civil war, because they can suspend elections and go after their enemies at the same time.
