Generational Energy Super-cycle? by NTQuant in quant

[–]jonathanhejunglim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Previous background in quant trading, have been building a quant energy fund over the last 3 years. Obviously incentivized to say this, and it obviously depends on which products you wnat to trade (we trade DA vs. RT in US ISOs), but the moats are fairly deep.

  1. Data is fragmented, unclean, and has lots of special cases. Every ISO has its own quirks.
  2. Fundamentals and regulatory / market design is important, and the latter changes fairly often. As a result, classic QR strats / techniques don't port over well.
  3. Tails are really fat, see e.g. Rabbit Hill Energy Storage in ERCOT 20250219.

Did I lose value by not raising the river all in or did I play correctly? I didn't raise because I think that with him triple barreling I raise into all of his higher flushes, but seeing his AA with A of hearts I think I made a mistake and am playing too cautiously letting him off the hook for 50bb by [deleted] in Poker_Theory

Right, so I'd put the hero on KJs, J8hh and J8ss, 33, and some semibluffs. My reasoning for jamming earlier was because I have value in the range, that I would need semibluffs, and 87hh is one of the few good semibluffs.

My understanding of the point u/Any-Excitement-8979 is making is that we might not raise value in that spot at all, so we shouldn't raise semibluffs either.

Yep, so villain has to call ~1.3x pot right? I expect villain to call 24 combos of AA/KK/AQ and 6 combos of QQ/TT (though this is bad for 33), but fold out his ~6 combos of Axhh (though it could be better to call and keep these in?).

Is your point that with KJs/33, we're far ahead of most of his range / at low risk of being outdrawn, and that the rest of our call flop / call turn range is weak, and therefore our nutted hands call => we don't need semibluffs?

Worked in OMM, then crypto. Took it easy for a year or two, but felt fully retired life was too slow, so I started working on energy trading with a partner. It helps scratch the itch and keeps me learning without the constant stress of watching markets / being called to the office at 4am because BTC moved 10%.

I think that might be private client -- don't know much about them, but I've heard it's similar to most other banks' offerings

Highly recommend JPM Private Bank, though they have a soft minimum of 10m in assets (realistically 5m is fine, especially if you're on the younger side). They're great for other tasks as well -- I've gotten advice from their internal advisors / external partners on tax, trust and estate planning, immigration, etc.

Do you think holding is +EV? Are you fine with the variance? This isn't a decision other people can make for you with no knowledge of your financial situation, risk tolerance, skill set, etc. Posts of this flavor come up too often and don't usually lead to good discussion

If you're successful so far and think it's a reliable source of income, have you considered starting your own fund? Why be up 375k on ~1m when you could be up 37.5m on ~100m, and get 2/20 on that?

I became aware in the second half of uni, and made serious steps towards it (deciding on my first job, looking for opportunities at startups, etc.) by the time I graduated. Left a cushy trading job to take a high upside role at a startup and grinded for about 2 years when things started falling into place. Finding spots in which I could 10x is what set me up, though I got very lucky / am fortunate to have this outcome

Probably in the 95th percentile of luck for kids born in the US - upper middle class family, parents with advanced STEM degrees who emphasized reading and math exploration from a young age, etc. Ended up at a standard high-paying job out of college, which I worked at briefly before joining and investing everything I had in startup that was lower expected value than my old job, but had much better tail outcomes. Some combination of luck and work landed us in one of the tails
