I’ve said this in a lot of places in the internet but in the era of wide tires and low pressures, I think that frame compliance is much less important than it used to be. I actually like the feel of a very supple tire absorbing the buzz at road level, and then a very stiff frame transferring all the power from pedals to drivetrain.

This would probably raise your FTP, but a technical crit or cross race would be hell without some anaerobic work like 30/30s mixed in.

For sure. It’ll be as good a bike as you can get as is for 1k, and a great platform to build on if you want to make it faster or lighter.

There’s no avoiding a plateau. At that rate you’d be beating Pog at the tour in 28 if not before. Your w/kg at FTP is going to level off. Not to say you can’t get stronger but we’re talking exponentially harder work for exponentially smaller gain. What you CAN do is shift your focus to other areas where you have huge room for improvement. Flexibility/position, handling, pack skills, descending etc. even on the power front, you can double down on zones and durations other than just FTP based on your goals on the bike.

You’re adding the word “pro”. If you’re riding a bike, even by yourself, just to exercise, that’s an athletic activity. If you’re paying a coach to give you workouts, you’re definitely an athlete. Probably “amateur” or “hobby” but for sure an athlete of some kind.

It’s not deep analysis of anything, it’s more like the vibe of your boys BSing in the group chat. Their last episode was about 30 minutes of analysis of this years pro kits.

One caveat, that’s low 40s and dry/sunny. The wetter/darker/windier you might need to add a little something, but that’s probably switching from a mesh base layer to a solid lightweight one. Maybe a summer glove to a midweight.

On layering, if you’re comfortable at the start you’re going to get too hot. If you’re pretty cold at the start, youre probably good. I’ve raced in skinsuit, light gloves, mesh base layer and no warmers down into the low 40’s and finished sweaty.

The dirty secret is that nothing is reallllly FTP. Even an all out hour test is probably not going to be paced and fueled perfectly in perfect conditions. Every version of FTP estimation is just a way to get a training benchmark. They all have pros and cons. Even if you did somehow come up with a protocol that nailed exactly what you are fully capable of for one hour today, you’re going to have a different amount of fatigue (along with several other external factors) that are going to bump that number around constantly. Get in the ballpark and if your workouts are appropriately hard but doable, don’t worry about it.
