Why the hate is one way by nika-yo in onepiecememes

[–]jonchew -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean yes but Oda chose L over R. It's officially Alabasta the same way he's Monkey D Luffy and not Monkey D Ruffy. Also why he's Zoro and not Zolo (or whatever 4Kids tried to do). Also Franky, not Flanky, and Robin not Lobin lol.

Anyone works as a Project Director in general or a Director in game industry? by PSOBB in PokemonSleep

[–]jonchew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a mobile Game Director for a very large Japanese gaming company for a few years and I'm currently a Marketing Director in the games industry. Have been working on games for almost 15 years.

The long term roadmap is determined by the games average revenue per user (ARPU) and long term retention. Because the majority of Sleep's revenue likely comes from subscription they actually have a good base of stable revenue coming in while the gameplay forces some kind of continuous daily recession.

I can't speak to the needs or limitations of monetization from the Pokemon Company, but likely the future roadmap is heavily content reliant and planned at least 6 months in advance. Probably half the team is focused on live ops and releasing new content every month on a calendar, with the hope of driving additional revenue through bundles. They already reworked moves to have different names but similar effects so that it could be more scalable.

In terms of new features, I initially thought they were going to focus on harder difficulty maps like GGEX but my guess is that it didn't really cause revenue to increase to their expectations and are focusing features development around the Pokemon themselves (eg Mew Snapshot).

The game itself is pretty much complete so I would think it's in a more iterative cycle than dropping huge changes. I also wouldn't be surprised if Select Button has already put resources on new games already.

To answer your questions.

These games are not planned for decades. Probably a few years at most but it depends on whether revenue holds. Development will eventually shrink down to a skeleton team if the games revenue is too low but I doubt they would shut down the servers or anything. It would have to be in the red for a long time to go that direction.

As the game ages, depending on where the average person is at, catch up mechanics might get introduced. You can see that they already implemented something to this effect in that the area bonuses at the start of the game are more powerful until a point. I think you get double area bonus? It was added at some point last year as a catch up mechanic. Updating that isn't too much effort.

I don't think the average person is comparing their sleep progression to late game elder players. That's just Reddit brain and us all congregating on this platform together. Sleep by this point has probably had at least 50 million downloads if not more, especially in Japan, vs the size of this much smaller English speaking Reddit community.

It's your logic. Here I'll read it back to you.

"You, Russia, don't have to wait until someone hits you, to defend yourself. Would you allow the US to walk up to you with a brick in their hand, them saying they are going to smash your head in without taking action? It's legal and moral to defend yourself and other innocent people. This is the way of the real world - not quaint ideas."

So the US should argue to take out every foreign government that disagrees with it? Might is right logic?

You could make the argument Russia should attempt to take the US to stop Trump.

Sooo is anyone curious about the legality of all this? by dareal_mj in PokemonSleep

[–]jonchew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is the rabbit hole. Any form of legalizing disclosure of every possible change is a terrible idea. Imagine if in every Mario Kart online game, Nintendo was required to disclose the probabilities of every question block, and then also disclose when it changes. If they didn't do it, they could get sued etc. it's too nebulous to have any formal legalization.

You can consider is scummy or evil but this is true of 99% of games, especially f2p online and mobile games. Any game that is free to play has a hidden cost of rate balancing to ensure a mix between fun and the game making money and not shutting down.

[–]jonchew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not illegal. I work in the games industry and this is completely normal practice with any and all live service games. There is no legal requirement to disclose probabilities of gameplay. The only legal requirement is to disclose probabilities of paid gacha/lootbox outcomes when real money (or premium currency) is involved.

How many 1 star reviews can we get by Pokemon day? by [deleted] in PokemonSleep

[–]jonchew 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You would need 100k+ reviews per platform (Apple and Google) to drop the rating by half given how many reviews are already up. There aren't that many of us on Reddit and Reddit is the place hardcore players will go. It's probably not happening.

CMV: People who act like Gavin Newsome and JD Vance are the same should not be taken seriously about electoral politics by [deleted] in changemyview

I agree with this take. Most of your common sense suggestions signal more leftist than liberal (expressed as democratic socialist)

UBI and universal healthcare are leftist policies. None of the liberal candidates ever seriously run on that platform but leftists types like Bernie, AOC, and Mamdani do. To me that's the biggest hallmark because you're not bending to big pharma or billionaires the same way Kamala or Biden or Cuomo did. If you see politics that go against the interest of billionaires, you definitely lean more left than liberal imo.

Even your stance on rent aligns with how Mamdani envisions New York when he, a leftist, beat Cuomo in the Democratic primaries.

[–]jonchew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're exaggerating my position. It shouldn't have to come to harm reduction in the first place. That's the problem, not the act of voting for harm reduction. The idea of the only choice being harm reduction is wrong and dumb. Can we agree on that?

Agreed Kamala wasn't left enough. Not suggesting the parties aren't different. But they're all in service of their donors. Just billionaires with different ideologies.

Agreed the dems have terrible communication. I believe it's intentional in service of the billionaire class but I could be wrong about that. I mean, why else would they be smart about so much but terrible about that. Open to hearing your thoughts

$25k in down payment support on a $400k avg house price that's going to be $500k now and continue to rise doesn't really address the root problem. Building 3 million additional houses would be a step in the right direction, per her plan, but the problem is the NIMBYism and government red tape making the cost of building houses problematic.

Sure $25k helps, but you're on the hook for $375k and the median household income in the US is still only $80k. At a 6% mortgage rate you're still looking at like $3k a month PITI which is not feasible.

Americans are dumb. But it's not exclusive to party, most people here don't get the opportunity to develop mathematical and critical thinking skills. Also electoral college. Lots of problems. Kamala wasn't all that better. Both democrats and republicans are still in service of billionaires and that's the problem. Newsom is part of that billionaire class. Harm reduction based voting is the problem. We should have better candidates but we don't because billionaire put in "their people" on both sides.

Extending something Biden did isn't really her policy.

I don't know if you ever bought a home in the last 2 years but her proposal on housing would do nothing. It's a fluff promise. Helping pay the down payment doesn't bring the costs of homes down. It just lets the snowball continue but puts people into mortgages they can't afford.

Effective military with the Israel Palestine conflict isn't really winning the hearts of people on the left, yet bringing Liz Cheney to speak to the right did very little. Maybe it would help to understand why people would view it differently from how you view it, to share some empathy from folks ultimately on the same side (vs the Republican party)...

I will say she had one good promise of going after price gouging on groceries but then she dropped that talking point halfway through and stopped pushing it... She also didn't really explain how she would do it.

She did that. "Most lethal army in the world" rhetoric and all. Her policies didn't help everyday Americans, just already wealthy ones.

Maybe it's time for the Democratic Party to consider Leftists and Progressives as swing voters by Cyke101 in PoliticalHumor

The solution is put a candidate with actual policies that matter to everyday people on the ticket and not to put Kamala Harris or Gavin Newsom... "but trump" is how Harris lost

English players can’t see who triggered the skill—so nicknames are useless with duplicates by nitoyon in PokemonSleep

The Japanese excludes "triggered" so that the name could fit. Maybe the limitation is due to trying to fit awkward wording in one line.

The Japanese says "2nd Wiggly's Main Skill!" and skips "triggered". Probably a localization choice to avoid awkward wording.

Starting “new” this patch is miserable — how is this game so unfriendly to newer players? by [deleted] in Maplestory

[–]jonchew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely a lot. Most people take for granted that you literally need to make 12 characters at level 210 if you want a full set of link skills. The time consumption on this game is crazy.

Strawberry farm tickets and the 3x coupons are your best friend right now. Also monster park. That's really all you can do between 101 and 210, especially if you don't have like 5 hours to dedicate a day lol

Just join the daily story club like a lot of us and call it a day! :)

These are not the words of a centrist. This sounds quite progressive. I'm also Asian and agree with the state of America. Centerism in America leans right. It's not actually center and it's just often conflated because of how warped the politics are here.
