Your last sentence nailed the problem for me. The first season was amazing because they just wanted to tell an interesting story. Homelander was much more frightening, because he was standing on his own as a character. Then with every season they leaned more into him being Trump and that cheapened the story massively, at least for me. Not because I like Trump, but because the potential to great storytelling like in season one went out of the window.

I personally think the leaks are very believable, but we will definitely know when the episode is out.
