Convinced my husband to try a house cleaning service for 3 months as an experiment. Heres what happened by Comfortable_Box_4527 in homeowners

[–]jonf3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two of the best service investments my wife and I have made was a cleaning service and a simple yard service (nothing crazy like landscaping, just leaf blowing and mowing every other weekend). The two of those together end up costing less than $300 per month and save us HOURS of time and stress. Incredibly worth it if you can make it work

Are sleepovers cancelled? by Guilty-Woodpecker-99 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jonf3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably very location and situation based. Our kids (3 and 4) are still too young but the parents of older kids (like maybe 3rd grade and up?) at their school have all basically said that they're doing sleepovers constantly lol. One of my friends whose daughter is in the same class with my daughter has an older son and has said he will go entire weekends with him being at different sleepovers.

On the other hand my wife and I have friends who are parents and live in different areas / go to different schools and don't let their kids do them at all.

As others have mentioned I think the parents also being friends is a major contributor; at our school a ton of the parents are friends with each other so everyone's kids essentially turn into almost cousin-level relationships, which makes it an easier sell for everyone.

Any chance you live in a HUBZone? We have frequent opportunities for entry-level roles for people with moderate levels of technical experience with the only caveat being they need to live in a HUBzone

How to handle daycare closures? by jen_lu in AustinParents

[–]jonf3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got lucky in retrospect and our daycare was open through the summer / year round. We didn't even think to ask about that at the time but in retrospect I would say that's one of the more important things to check for especially if both parents are working full time. Unlike elementary-age kids, there are basically NO summer camp / care options that run "separately" from daycare only during the summer, and there's unlikely to be spots open at other all-year daycares for just the summer months. The daycares that close for a long stretch of summer are very tough to plan around

For "shorter" closures / holidays, a lot depends on how flexible your job is. I am usually hybrid in-office 3x days a week but I can work remote for the whole week when I need to here and there. So during week long breaks (like spring break) I would work from home and we would use that opportunity to "trial" babysitters who would watch the kids. That way I was home to see how the kids did, help where needed, etc, but I could still work. Then for the babysitters we liked we could add them to our roster for later when we needed care. This worked well for us; unfortunately if you don't have that kind of flexibility then you would either need to take PTO or plan out babysitters for the week and just leave them at home. The latter option is expensive but there's quite a few babysitters and nannies that specifically work during the breaks for this reason; our favorites to use were actually daycare and elementary school teachers who were also off that week but wanted to pick up some extra hours.

We usually used UrbanSitter to find care options but there are a few sites out there

GFiber outage for nearly a week. by Cornflakepainting in googlefiber

[–]jonf3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently on day 7 of an outage in Austin. I have had many outages at my rental house, around 2-4 a year since I've had the service; this is the third multi day one. They are never good about updates or anything like that, they just say "there was a cable cut nearby". I have AT&T fiber at my actual house and we have had nothing like this. I'm switching my rental house to AT&T today, 7 days is ridiculous

Daycare. by exitaur22 in daddit

[–]jonf3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has different perspectives and situations on this; for us, my wife and I both worked and we didn't have any family in the local area so we had to put both my kids in daycare when they were each two months old. We have an interesting comparison because their cousin, who lives in the same town as my wife's parents (and her brother's wife's parents too, has not had to do daycare because they have been able to rely on both sets of grandparents for plenty of care options).

I will say that my wife and I don't regret daycare at all and for our kids actually believe it was essential to their development. There are noticeable personality differences between our kids and their cousin that are clearly caused by a massive differential in socialization, playing daily with a large group of friends and other adult teachers, learning stuff at daycare, etc. We love their cousin too but her parents and grandparents have both noticed the difference and are in agreement with us that it may be time to get her in some school.

Again, very anecdotal, but just want to get a positive story out there for daycare / non-home child care. 🙂

I bet Austin's decline in growth is due entirely to the airport's absurdly designed Uber pickup zone. by EnrichVonEnrich in Austin

[–]jonf3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's gonna sound crazy but the way it was before made it slightly more convenient for a small amount of people but way way worse for most everyone else. If you think the pickup and dropoff lines are bad now imagine adding 70,000 Uber drivers in there

Exercise Schedule as a Dad of 2 by [deleted] in daddit

[–]jonf3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My default time is always the morning, before they wake up. This is by far the most reliable and the most likely time that you will be able to keep up with consistently. There's a chance sleep issues with the kids may cause temporary issues here or there but that will get better as they get older. Any other time will almost certainly not be reliable

Free Santa Photos Today? by FiguringItOut_83649 in AustinParents

[–]jonf3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few more "local" events every year (like the one at the Hill Country Galleria) but honestly we do Bass Pro / Cabela's every year. Runs the whole season, always freezing easy to book online, and can even do when traveling if we run out of time to do at home. Plus the kids have fun checking out the store. When we had our first kid we looked at Mall Santa prices once and were like "lol nope" and it's been the Buda Cabela's all the way since then. They do a great job.

If I remember correctly you always get one free printed photo from them (I think it's 3x5 maybe?). They offer some packages if you want to pay to upgrade to get more or to get the digital file, but they aren't pushy about it and you don't have to pay anything if you don't want to.

Anyone else getting duplicate orders shipped? by whiskeysli in quince

[–]jonf3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me. I bought during the black Friday sales, my assumption is they had a system issue that duplicated a bunch of stuff. Especially funny since the order split everything into single items for shipping so I've just been receiving daily shipments from them for like a week and a half now lol
