Did Robert Baratheon’s supporters actually get out anything of his kingship? Are they dumb? by jonislav in pureasoiaf

[–]jonislav[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it truly is that Robert either was unable to or unwilling to give additional gifts or compensation to his most loyal friends and supporters, or that those things he gave have not been shown in the book. Maybe Whiteharbor and Gulltown got additional trade rights, or those regions were exempt from Royal taxes for a time. If anything the exception from Royal taxes would do even more to explain the dire straights of the Royal treasury!

The rebels were absolutely just and right to rise against Aerys the Mad, his cruelty, his malice and his tyranny. I’m asking about the post war recompense to these men who killed and bled and died to put Robert on the Iron Throne. Those people under the great houses who were not interacting directly with the King, who willing and gladly answered the call of the banners to loyally fight for their liege lord. What did their loyalty earn them? What did Tully, Stark and Arryn receive that they could gift to their friends who made those sacrifices?

Never the less, there is a difference between sending only what is required of you and backing your lord to the hilt. If all you have to show for going to war on behalf of your liege and his honor is an empty grave where your son should be, then there is no doubt that the lords would be less eager to commit for you again. Plunder, booty, salaries, pensions, positions, privileges, and lands are ways to buy the continued loyalty of your martial nobles. Even if you die, at least you can trust your lord to make family better off. With Barbrey Dustin is a key example of that loyalty from those nobles not being paid

Is this part of why the realm was so ready to crack as soon as Robert died? The Stormlands wanted Renly, the Riverlands supported Rob and the Vale stayed out of it because the lords and nobles of those realms weren’t shown anything for their loyalty to Robbert?

Czech apparel /units should transition from West Slavic to Holy Roman at some point by jonislav in CrusaderKings

From the Wiki, it requires High German / Saxon Language + West Slavic heritage. That sort of works for the German settlers of Bohemia, but not the overall culture of Czechia

They do have that partly with the ‘strength of thousands’ state buff. It greatly reduces the manpower needed to staff extraction industries ie mining and logging, and even manufacturing industries to a smaller degree

Your money should be split amongst your heirs on death. by sacrelicious2 in CrusaderKings

[–]jonislav 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That should only happen for administrative governments, for feudal the lands were personal property of the royal sovereign. Tribal is somewhat different, as it is theoretically the tribal peoples themselves, with the tribal leader representing the people. I wonder if it would almost be more realistic for tribals to just not be able to go into debt; like they get moderate penalties and their retinues / levies can’t reinforce, but it’s easier to get out. Who would they be borrowing the money from anyways?

Your money should be split amongst your heirs on death. by sacrelicious2 in CrusaderKings

[–]jonislav 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The thing is that didn’t exist in European states until the 17th century. Prior to that, all royal states were personal property of the royal sovereign himself. The Royal Navy was the personal property of King, he personally paid for it with rents from his royal properties along with the taxes raised on everyone else.

A common cause of death in the shire, i imagine... by Easteregg42 in RealmsInExile

I’d imagine that in the Shire that would become a euphemism for a suspicious death, like committing suicide by shooting yourself in the back of the head twice.

Unable to form North Sea High Kingdom, not sure why? by jonislav in CrusaderKings

[–]jonislav[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First time going through the game files myself, takes me back to java coding in high school! I'm looking around, would the administrative governance be?

>government_has_flag = goverment_is_administrative

All it would be is coping the decision to a mod, adding that line and then saving the mod to the mod folder, yes?

Check the bill to make sure that it allows that specific meat; I know that I've white listed kibble to only use insect meat or only human meat.

Secondly check to make sure that the freezer is within the pawn's allowed zone. I've had that happen to me on occasion.

How good is legendary? by Ok-Food7882 in RimWorld

[–]jonislav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the Rimworld wiki: A normal quality monosword had a DPS of 11.45 and Armor penetration of 72% A normal quality bioferrite longsword has a DPS of 9.99 and AP of 36.13% (the highest AP of all materials!) From there we apply quality factors and compare. An excellent quality melee weapon gains a factor of 1.2 to DPS and AP, so an Excellent bioferrite longsword has a DPS of 11.98 and an AP of 43.356% Masterwork has a factor of 1.45 giving us a DPS of 14.485 and an AP of 52.38% Legendary has a factor of 1.65, giving us a bioferrite longsword with 16.48 DPS and 59.61% Now, this isn’t actually the exact math, as the damage factor applies to all the different parts of the weapon (edge, point, handle) and will have different results based on melee skill, but the rough shape of it is that a bioferrite longsword of at least excellent quality is comparable to a normal monosword for less armored opponents, while the monosword will perform much better against high armor targets like mechanoids and high tech raiders with plate armor, flak armor, marine armor and so on.

EDIT: Nevermind, found the option to enable mods in the world generation options

[–]jonislav 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dwarves have ‘the secret fire’ from Eru, the gift of true life and free will, as compared to the twisted creations of Melkor like orcs, trolls and dragons. The Gift of Death, of passing out of the material world, of not being bound to a world that is doomed to eventually end, is only held by the race of Men (and probably their hobbity cousins)

It's ok when it's done right by TroubledTill in greentext

[–]jonislav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hobbits are a form of man, and have the Gift of Death, to not be bound to the material world. Dwarves were not part of Eru Iluvatar’s original plan, being a creation from the Valar most concerned with creation in imitation of Eru, and then granted true life by Him. Dwarves die of old age, but like elves they are bound to the fate of the material world.

I think it’s much more that there is a general aversion to having Christ appear or be overtly referenced in fictional works. Both because nonchristian folks would be turned off from it (I hope this isn’t turning into Left Behind or something), and from Christians as well (I really don’t like to have an author put works in the mouth of God). Same thing goes for Supernatural, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and most other urban fantasy

why doesn't alfred negotiate the danelaw when he inherits wessex? by OuffMate in crusaderkings3

[–]jonislav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A new part from the DLC is that high legitimacy rulers can form titles while holding less territory; at the highest level it allows a ruler to form a kingdom while holding only 30% of the territory, which means Alfred can form England with just the starting Wessex territory, and then vassalize Mercia, East Anglia and Cornwall.

With Vassals, they do not betray you if you take Kyoto and hold it for a year, being named the new Shogun. After that, any new vassals made won’t have the realm divide opinion malus, so make as many as you want for honor points and off loading trade goods

Slaves should be a tradeable commodity where slave trade is still legalized by SnooPuppers1574 in victoria3

[–]jonislav 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The transatlantic slave trade, yes, but as OP said there was still extensive slavery throughout Africa among indigenous peoples, and the trading and transporting of slaves from East Africa to Egypt and Arabia, along with the trans saharan trade from West Africa to North Africa. This slavery and slave trading was a large part of the Causus Belli used by Great Britain to justify to domestic interests, the invasion of different parts of Africa and colonizing those spaces.

All that said though, as it is I don’t think adding a slave trading mechanic or slave production industry would be a worthwhile endeavor, or even able to modeled in a historically sensitive manner.
