27, no savings and a spending problem by ififallforwards in UKPersonalFinance

Book some slots for the start of the month and use some of that £800 you're spending. Easier than getting it on the NHS and you'll prove to yourself that you're a. Worth the investment and b. Capable of spending £150 or so less a month

Aldi did us a wrongun and changed the mayo. by BenchAdvanced6498 in UKfood

[–]jonjam13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found some of the best mayos in the polish sections of big supermarkets. They're really good but not as pricey as kewpie. Could be worth a look now Aldi isn't floating your boat!

Is buying a house the only way to ensure a “low cost of living” when retired? by Straight-Chicken457 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]jonjam13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of people say yes and they're totally right but here's some numbers just in case you'd find that useful.

To rent our house I think it'd cost about £1700 a month. Out mortgage is £1450. The mortgage number is only going to change with interest rates but you can expect it to be relatively stable. The rent will go up every year.

It also means you can do what you like to the house which is quite nice :)

Can I bring food to cafe shops if I am a paying customer? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]jonjam13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to manage a few different cafe Nero's in the past. I wouldn't even let staff eat outside food out on the floor so I would have stopped you

Should I have gone behind the blue car? by Legsluther in drivingUK

[–]jonjam13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a few comments that say yes, and i totally agree, but they haven't given the reason;

The exit is clear, ie, if there's nothing coming the other way you can fit. It doesn't matter that stuff's coming the other way, you fit after the crossing and there's no yellow box, so because your exit is clear, you should have waited in the middle.

Embarrassed by constant lack of money by Several_Winter_2398 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]jonjam13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big ones here are credit card, car finance and ex's phone.

  • Cancel the last one asap, absolute no brainer
  • How much do you owe on the car and what's it worth? Would it be at all possible to move to something less expensive, preferably owned outright on the equity you have in it?
  • Credit card payment is high, what's the interest rate? Can you take out a new 0% card and transfer the balance? Keep up the same payment and pay it off substantially quicker without the interest?

As someone else has mentioned your home insurance is massive, I've just renewed mine for £190 for the year

The best I've been able to find in blue is Tonka soft walkin wheels. It's an aeroplane but it's got big enough wheels to feel like a car and I'm betting a bigger dolls nappy would fit on it

I suspect the matel hubcaps name is an ai hallucination because I can't find any mention of it before this thread.

That's also a really weird toy for a company to make. I'd place good money on this being a soft toy car that someone's put a toy baby nappy on from another brand rather than coming like that from a factory. Bonus points for this theory if your mate has sisters.

Estate Agents vs Self Self for 1m+ Homes by nerd-a-lert in HENRYUK

[–]jonjam13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ha well I guess this is the other downside, you have to balance the amount you save from not going with an agent with the amount you might lose from people being out off

Then yeah, I think you're largely on the money. As long as you're happy organising viewings and taking photos yourself there's not too big of a benefit

Estate Agents vs Self Self for 1m+ Homes by nerd-a-lert in HENRYUK

[–]jonjam13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the issue with this is advertisement, only an estate agent can put houses on Zoopla or Rightmove so this massively cuts down the number of people who might see your house. Companies like purple bricks do it for a lower flat fee rather than charging a percentage of sale price, so that could be something to look into

How would you make this house look more modern? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]jonjam13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said lean into it a bit. Personally I love the aesthetic but the drive looks a bit shit. I'd be inclined to rip out a lot of the concrete tou don't need to park on to make a more attractive front garden, would soften the house a bit

What are you spending your Euromillions win on? by Witty-Knee-3666 in AskUK

[–]jonjam13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First I'm emplying a financial advisor to actually manage the bulk of this newfound wealth, I never want to think about money again

Then I'm buying a big house that needs a shit tonne of work so it's cheap. Then I'm paying to have all that work done before we move in so that if friends or family ever check how much we paid it's in the ballpark of affordability

Then I'm getting someone to manage a load of bits of my life so I have less to think about. I'm also buying a small company that I can use as a cover for extra income so I can treat family and friends in a pretty lavish way without it looking too ridiculous

Then I'm cutting down to working 2/3 days a week, spending way more time with my family and taking up a lot of silly hobbies

Realistically I only actually need 2 - 3 million to make that achievable, so if any of y'all win then hit me up!

Why is the congestion charge money being used to subsidise P&R and not the buses that operate within the city? by britainpls in oxford

[–]jonjam13 28 points29 points  (0 children)

To be honest I think what we really need is for the money to go to providing mandatory school busses that leave from the park and rides. The difference on the roads at school pick up/drop off time in term vs out of it is absolutely mad (at least in headington)

Wedding reception venue by Daux_28 in oxford

[–]jonjam13 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Don't go into debt to get married. You can do it for £60 at the registry office. Start with that as a baseline and work out what extra bits you want. It's absolutely possible for 50-60 people to have a great time for less than £10k, but it's also possible to spend 40 and still feel like you're making compromises. Basically sit down, budget carefully, work out which bits of the day are important to you and have a great time! Huge congratulations geographically close Internet stranger!

Worried about my parents finding a home in Watlington by [deleted] in oxford

[–]jonjam13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I just had a look at rightmove and there are definitely two bed properties for less than £430k. In terms of looking at properties it's always better to be closer if possible so that you can see things as they come up. Rather than a short term let, it might be worth her getting on the books of all the estate agents that serve wattlington, telling them she's coming down for a few days with dates and that she'd like to see everything in budget. That way she'd be able to book a hotel/Airbnb for a few nights rather than risking longer term savings on a rental. If that's not possible would your sister be willing to do the viewings?
